What can anyone tell me about USB1 & USB2?

Are they compatable with each other.

My lad's looking at buying an Ipod thingy and the one he likes the salesman say you can only use a a computer with USB2 to download

How do you tell if your PC has USB1 or 2 versions

Dunno, when I bough my iPod, I didn't really look into how to connect it to your PC I just thought it was USB cable, then I realised it was its another type of cable, The thing I had fitted on my PC for the cable definetly was called either of those, but the USB things you've listed could just be another name for the cable, I dunno :unsure:

-I know i've not gave you much help there but i'm just describing what I had to have fitted for the cable to work! :unsure: Spose thats not much help either :rolleyes:lol

Right I still have the box here's what it says;

Windows Requirements

-PC with FireWire or USB 2.0 port or FireWire or USB 2.0 card

-Windows 200 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Home or Professional.

Mac Requirements;

-Macintosh computer with FireWire port

-Mac OS X v10.1.5 or later.

Sorry this probably isn't much help either :unsure:

My understanding was that USB 2.0 is backwardly compatible with USB 1.0. However USB 1.0 is somewhat less peformant when compared with USB 2.0.

In short it should work together but 1.0 is old technology and it would be better with 2.0.

Usual caveats apply. :thumbup:;)

Most unlikely. In all probability the USB hardware will be part of the Motherboard PCB. :( <_< It is in the case of my laptop, server and desktop. :huh::( <_<

Problem it is so cheap to stuff it on a PCB that no-one (other than USB Hub makers) would make a separate USB module. Then you would have the problem of how to connect it to the PCB. :( <_<

My advice is try the USB 2.0 with the USB 1.0 and it might all work hunky chunky. :D:D:thumbup:;) On the other hand it might not and that would be a case of Oh B :mad::mad: ll :mad: cks. :( <_<

Im sure if you searched you could find a pci to usb2 card, similar to this one.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...5183054781&rd=1

You can also get them with firewire ports included should you need one of those too.

You learn something new everyday. Well spotted kenny. This will solve your problems, if you have a free PCI slot. :D:thumbup:;)

  • 4 weeks later...

Steven, Thanks for asking.

The ipod was going to be a birthday pressy for his girlfriend, it all got rather complicated PC wise so he gave up on the idea and bought something else, said he might wait for Christmas now. :unsure:
