davieG Posted 5 September 2008 Posted 5 September 2008 They compete against each other to gain the rights packages. Of course they show different games, you can't have two networls with one rights package. Setanta won 1 of the six Premiership packages, and the FA contract, entitling them to home friendlies and away qualifiers, and on certain games, the rights to sell highlights to other broadcasters. I know what they won! Please explain why can't you have more than one network showing the same games, they used to have it for the cup final and we only had 3 channels then now we've got hundreds - that would be real competition for the customer? The whole purpose of the EC in insisting on competition between the different organisations is to ensure the best deal for customers, to drive the price down and the quality up - this does nothing of the sort.

Good point im not fussed about premiership games, i can survive without watching them but england games its just completely out of order
Lovejoy Posted 5 September 2008 Posted 5 September 2008 I hate Setanta because I have SKY and see no reason why I should buy yet more channels. SKY's coverage wipes the floor with Setanta .

I don't see it as Setanta or Sky as I've said they are showing different games. As it happens I have Sky but then I have no choice at all if I want digital TV. I used to have NTL/Virgin but the don't do digital in my area, I can't get Freeview so I'm stuck with Sky whether I like it or not. For me there is literally no competition for the supply of digital TV never mind just the football matches!
Lovejoy Posted 5 September 2008 Posted 5 September 2008 I don't see it as Setanta or Sky as I've said they are showing different games. True but seen as we buy the whole SKY package (tv, broadband etc) I see no reason to buy the Setanta TV package on top of what we already pay.

Rodderz Posted 5 September 2008 Posted 5 September 2008 I think that's the point I've been trying to make. The thing is about setanta its what £10 a month, and you get what 2 decent channels are the rest our crap but your paying for them if you could just get setanta 1&2 for a cheaper price i possibly would consider buying it

Alexikokopops Posted 5 September 2008 Posted 5 September 2008 On freeview you get Setanta 1 and that is it. Birrova rip really. It still gives you the option of watching 40 odd Premiership games for £10 a month, instead of having to pay £28 a month for a Sky package with just Sky Sports 1 (it's £36 a month if you want them all).

True, but if you're paying 10.99 per month on freeview for one setanta channel and 10.99 per month for the other setantas that sky offer then it is a rip. Or have I got that wrong?

You only need the other Setanta channels if you like watching AFL or Hurling Something I have actually found myself doing recently actually because THERE'S NOTHING ON THE MILLIONS OF CHANNELS YOU GET.

It's the principle of it though isn't it. I love the amount of football I'm getting on the one channel for 10.99 but if you pay 10.99 for that plus other Setanta channels available on Sky then it bugs me a bit because you are getting more for your money (even if it is the compelling Hurling) than me. I actually don't miss sky at all, I'm quite happy with recordable freeview which is their version of a sky plus box. All those channels get on my nerves as, like you say, there's nowt on the majority of them.

Except you have to pay an extra £17 a month (at least) for the privilidge of getting the extra Setanta channels for the same price, so I like to look at it that way I'm just thankful that on Virgin Media (I'm not sure if you can do this on Sky, you couldn't when I had it about 5 years ago) you can set your favourite channels and look at a TV guide of just those channels. It makes it a lot easier to actually find something.

I agree to a certain extent but if you're a sports fan then you'll have all the sky sports channels anyway (if you can stretch to it) but I do take your point. You can do the favourite channel thing on freeview plus too. Come on Sky, get with the programme!
