Uncle Monty Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Does anyone know any good jungle artists/groups?
ronnup Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Does anyone know any good jungle artists/groups? bloody hell times have changed. I played Jungle out for years, funny hearing people ask about 'groups'. If you want to get into it mate get yourself on dogsonacid.com and read/download. My advice would be to get back to your local roots and check out some Formation Records/New Identity releases. Worked at the labels for a while and they used to put out some quality. These days i'd reccomend Calibre/Nu Tone/Marcus Intalex....
Jay Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Does anyone know any good jungle artists/groups? what sort of direction are you wanting though the more in your face stuff or the chilled out jazzed up drum n bass style with soft mellow vocals etc? you must have heard something to tickle your fancy as they say so give us something to work with and I sure we can come up with some brilliant stuff between us. A brilliant start to any collection though would be New Forms by Roni Size a stunning album
James. Posted 14 September 2008 Posted 14 September 2008 Right then: Chilled out, atmospheric, "intelligent" drum n bass - look out for LTJ Bukem, the godfather of this strand of dnb. His album Logical Progression is still one of the best albums of the entire genre. His Earth series and sessions with MC Conrad are also well worth a listen. Basically anything on Good Looking Records (his label). Also under this banner would be the likes of Photek who took the "intelligent" side and made it a bit more moody. Funky, soulful drum n bass - main label here is Hospital Records. They've had there time in the sun over the last 5 years or so with the likes of High Contrast and London Elektricity being pretty much the biggest names in the scene. Fabio used to and probably still does play a lot of this type of stuff - liquid funk. Might even still be doing his radio show. Logistics is another big name along with Nu:Tone and Klute (I've heard big things about his latest album). Old school jungle - sound of the 90's. Old school was kind of the link between hardcore and drum n bass. It's basically jungle with ragga and reggae elements. DJ's like Randall still play this sort of stuff. Ratpack were massive and do the occasional night still. Kenny Ken's another one. Some of the older Ganja Cru (Hype, Zinc, etc) stuff has a proper old school feel to it. Check out Super Sharp Shooter EP for example. Classic of the sub genre. Darkside, tech-step, dirty drum n bass - the main label here is Renegade Hardware. Artists like Friction, Ink, Usual Suspects and Loxy and then also Metalheadz which is Goldie's label. The really dirty, dark end of drum n bass. Includes albums such as the Armageddon series. Jump-up, dancefloor drum n bass - this is the sort of stuff you'll hear if you go to a Ram Records night. DJ's like Andy C, Sub Focus, Moving Fusion. It's like the mainstream end of the underground. Andy C's Nightlife series of albums are good examples. Minimal, techy, new drum n bass - see my thread further down the page. This is the sound I'm really enjoying at the minute. Brilliant albums from Commix (Call to Mind), Calibre (Overflow) and D Bridge (The Gemini Principle). Also check out Marcus Intalex's radio shows, Soulution Radio. Really good drum n bass, not necessarily for the dancefloor but brilliant elsewhere. Other stuff - wouldn't be right if I didn't mention albums such as Goldie - Timeless, 4hero - 2 pages, Roni Size - New Forms, Bad Company - Digital Nation. You can also hear a range of styles if you listen to the Fabric Live series - High Contrast, Hype, Grooverider, Fabio, J Magik, Andy C, Noisia, Inaltex, Craze have all done mixes.
Uncle Monty Posted 14 September 2008 Author Posted 14 September 2008 heard a few goldie songs, also started to listen to a bit of future sound of london. Never really listened to any jungle but think i would like it, i get this podcast from itunes called 'ze mix' i would recommend it to anyone who likes dance music.
Alexikokopops Posted 15 September 2008 Posted 15 September 2008 Why did the lion get lost? Because Jungle is massive!
