Jack Posted 22 September 2008 Posted 22 September 2008 Nope , Americans sang it in reference to thier top man Boo Weekley Fair enough, my bad. Dont follow golf, you see.
purpleronnie Posted 22 September 2008 Posted 22 September 2008 What do you expect, that is the mental age of your average American adult. Thats being generous.
The Reverend Posted 23 September 2008 Author Posted 23 September 2008 And of course Brits would never dream of cheering when opponents missed putts or sent shots into the water... Weekley seems to be a bit of a Gazza-type figure, except he can actually be forgiven for being a fcukwit by being quite successful in his sport. And as a captain, Azinger > Faldo. That goes a long way to explaining the outcome of the match. Congratulations Ultra, on the most laughably bad comparison i have ever heard in my whole life. Another that knows nothing about golf, until the Ryder Cup comes on. Is there really nothing that you are not an expert on? I laughed out loud when i read this. Well said Hullfox. So true. Look I dont agree with people cheering when people are about to take their shots. But it seems just because it wasnt the same atmosphere as an english golf course then somehow thats wrong? why? It reminds me of people who go abroad and are victim of crime, they always say this would never happen in england, of course not your not in england. Why expect it to be the same? just because its different doesnt make it wrong. If the shoe was on the other foot and the europeans at home were singing and chanting and getting under the american golfers skin and it helped us to win, would you be so upset? I saw poulter win his match and loads of americans were clapping and congratulating him. Westwood just made things worse for himself by mentioning it, talk about it after sure but I just thought you get paid millions if you cant rise above some stupid remarks by the US fans and a few OTT celebrations they you need to grow a backbone. Its different though. They are both playing the same game- etiquette is exactly the same here and there. There's no excuse not to adhere to it. And of course it makes it wrong if its different! It's bloody etiquette, its an unwritten rule! Of course its wrong FFS! And yes, if the shoe was on the other foot i would get annoyed, because i actually play the game and understand it, whereas it seems your average American golf fan is some pissed up retard who wants to shout 'Get in the hole!' after every shot. It's not how its meant to be and if we did that at a European venue, i'd criticise us just as much as them. And as i've said once, golfs not like Basketball, shouting and getting mouthy is not part of the game. When a player is hitting a shot, you shut the fcuk up, or fcuk off, because you're not a golf fan. It's nothing to do with having a backbone. It's common etiquette. You shut up because it breaks the players concentration. And if you're going to do that, whats the fcuking point? We may aswel just give it to them, because it makes life a lot harder.

I have to admit I didnt see all of the ryder cup but when I saw the euro team playing it was quiet when they took their shots I'm sure sometimes someone did make noise but with a crowd of 40,000 you're going to get that sometimes. I was happy to see Lee Westwoods manager come out and stated he thought Lee would regret what he said, and his opinion the US crowd were remarkably well behaved, faldo said the same thing. I think westwood just made things worse for himself and as he was the only one to get so mad about it, and he came across as a bit of a baby. Golf has always been a little to elitist for me, times change, the fact its more and more open in the US than it used to be I think thats a good thing and it means more and more working class fans are playing and attending matches which I like, and they tend to drink and are less reserved, it can be an unwritten rule all you like but its not 1898 its 2008. If all the rules stayed the same Tiger woods wouldnt be playing.

Women were'nt allowed to play in the past, neither were coloured people, they were rules which were always going to chage with the times. The one thing that shouldnt change with the times is the rules and etiquette. As much as i understand what you're trying to say, i cant agree with it. Perhaps Westwood did over-react a bit. But at times the crowd were'nt good. Of course Faldo's going to be favourable to the US - he does commentary there! How would it go down if he slagged off the US? Not too well is my guess!
AmericanScott Posted 23 September 2008 Posted 23 September 2008 BOO SA BOO SA Personally, i don't give a darn about golf.
