shen Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 Right, here's my attempt: 1. Amplifier - The Consultancy Talented band from Manchester who Mike Vennart (Oceansize) described as his "brothers in amps". Thought this would get the attention of the listener straight away (Best at high volume ) 2. Archive - Numb To be honest, I have mixed feelings about Archive. Some of it is brilliant, some of it is downright boring or shit. This album is imo by far their best though, and was very original. 3. Nosound - About Butterflies and Children I allowed myself to recycle this track from my previous mix as I love this soothing piece. And they do deserve more attention. 4. Tool - The Patient I couldn't resist putting in a Tool track even though I think it won't be liked by many. The lyrics and the mood of this track give me goosebumps everytime I hear it. 5. Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes The opener on In Absentia (using the cover as avatar). The dynamics in this is fantastic, and the shifts are just so natural and harmonious. A very solid PT track. 6. The Living Things - God Made Hate Again, I'm making use of several of the artists on my previous mix, and I just like to put one of Living Things' tracks in there because they kick a bit of ass 7. Anouk (ft. Sarah Bettens) - I Alone A brilliant cover of Live's song. Anouk's voice has something about it... And it works well as a duet (Sarah Bettens from K's Choice). 8. Soulwax - Too Many DJ's Already present in this edition of CD Swap, so I'm sure a few will like hearing this. Another song that can get me pumped up. 9. MC 900 Foot Jesus - Killer Inside Me I don't know where or when I first heard MC 900 Foot Jesus, but I found his style great as a kid, and I still rate his work highly. Inspired by Jay's mix, I thought I'd add a hip hop tune to the mix. 10. * A short interlude... 11. Afro Celt Sound System - Lovers Of Light Something different to most things. I like the idea of fusioning Celtic, electronic and African style music, and I think it works very well to be honest. 12. Porcupine Tree - Sleep Together An example of how flexible PT are, and how the different members lead songs. This one has Richard Barbieri's footprints all over it. Very different from the other PT track on this mix. Was absolutely cracking track when I saw them live last year. 13. The Pineapple Thief - Dead In The Water Slightly similar in sound (and in name!) to PT, yet with their own style. This track has been growing on me for a while now. 14. Ours - Fallen Souls A group I only discovered recently. The vocals are very interesting, and remind me of the incomparable Jeff Buckley. 15. Oceansize - Saturday Morning Breakfast Show I absolutely love this track. And because it reminds me of both Portishead and Sigur Ros, I thought it would be appreciated by a few on here. Link to Shen's mix I've added an "EP"-size file too with some music by (and mostly in) Danish/Dutch/Norwegian/German artists, if you're interested. Includes: Natasja, Oomph!, Trentemøller, Nephew, Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, Baksteen, Magtens Korridorer, Kaizer's Orchestra and Mew. EP ENJOY!
Trav Le Bleu Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 Downloading now and dang! This means I need to pull my finger out and review Joe's (I have listened to it! Twice!)
JakeShingler Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 Downloading now should be intresting as i have never heard of any them.
shen Posted 20 October 2008 Author Posted 20 October 2008 Downloading now should be intresting as i have never heard of any them. Really? Most of them are well-known compared to the obscure or local bands you'll find in other FT mixes
Joe. Posted 21 October 2008 Posted 21 October 2008 I will get round to downloading this eventually, I just have no internet at home at the moment... <_< EDIT: Aha, my inernet has healed itself! I'll get it downloaded tomorrow.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 22 October 2008 Posted 22 October 2008 Listened to it once and it's probably my favourite of the mixes this time around so far. That might all change with a second listen though! At which point I'll post a review.
JakeShingler Posted 22 October 2008 Posted 22 October 2008 I have downloaded it but dont know how to listen to it?
shen Posted 22 October 2008 Author Posted 22 October 2008 I have downloaded it but dont know how to listen to it? The file is zipped, so you'll need a program like WinRar, WinZip, AlZip etc. to extract the files. After you've done that, just add the mp3's to a playlist in your media player (Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp... ). Did that help?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 22 October 2008 Posted 22 October 2008 Will try and do a proper review soon but just to say I had this on in the car on the way to the game last night and thought the first few tracks were brilliant.
shen Posted 23 October 2008 Author Posted 23 October 2008 Nice Mix Shen Gonna make one of my own soon Liked it better than my previous one then?
Joe. Posted 23 October 2008 Posted 23 October 2008 OK, I'm trying to download this for the third time now, hoping my internet doesn't cut out... We'll get there in the end.
Joe. Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 First listen- very impressed! Proper review to follow sometime soon...
NFFC Chris Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 Have 3 Porcupine Tree albums so have those two tracks but that's it,I'm going to download the rest in a bit, seems as if you know your stuff

Daggers Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 11. Afro Celt Sound System - Lovers Of LightSomething different to most things. I like the idea of fusioning Celtic, electronic and African style music, and I think it works very well to be honest. An outstanding experience outdoors, live.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 October 2008 Posted 26 October 2008 1. Amplifier - The Consultancy Proper metal, very Qotsa in places. An eye-openning start, I liked this. 2. Archive - Numb This reminds me (in places) of Spacemen 3. Not entirely bad then. 3. Nosound - About Butterflies and Children Wonderfully incandescant etherial beauty. Loved it! 4. Tool - The Patient Not liked by me, certainly. A b ig, fat meh! To much like Blinkin' Pants and Blimp Miskick. Tosh! The most aptly named band ever! 5. Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes METAL! No... wait... I was wrong. It went all AOR after a few seconds. 6. The Living Things - God Made Hate Liked this the 1st time round, less the 2nd. It reminded me of Marilyn Manson and that really something that I don't want, ever, unless it's his funeral. 7. Anouk (ft. Sarah Bettens) - I Alone She sound's like Tracy Chapman. I really don't like acoustic power songs - they don't work. Acoustic is for mellow. 8. Soulwax - Too Many DJ's Familiar with this - got plenty of Soulwax stuff, though this is far from their best. Prefer them when they are doing electro. 9. MC 900 Foot Jesus - Killer Inside Me Not good, not bad, just very, very average in it's field. 10. * Love Python - hate their songs. They're just not funny. Songs rarely are. 11. Afro Celt Sound System - Lovers Of Light This works quite well, but it's soemthing that I think I would really need to be in the mood for. I can imagine that bthey they would be good live as Daggers said. 12. Porcupine Tree - Sleep Together Better from "The Tree", but still not good enough. Must try harder!!! 13. The Pineapple Thief - Dead In The Water Okay, but not great. Could be a grower and I might like to hear more of them. A little over long maybe in the sense that less would have left me wanting more? 14. Ours - Fallen Souls I can see the Buckley reference - but they fall somewhat short. Having said that, you can fall short of Jeff Buckley and still be good. I liked this, the swirly guitars and the vocals. Wouldn't mind some more. 15. Oceansize - Saturday Morning Breakfast Show Singer sounds a little like Josh Homme. Weird change of pace 2/3rds of the way through, but I did like this and I'll look up more of their stuff. **************************************************************************** Told you I might change my view after 2nd listen Yet another mix of about 50% enjoyability. Thanks Shen!

Thanks Shen! You're welcome, and thanks for the review Obviously very hit and miss, but intrigued to see what you'd like and what you wouldn't like. What does AOR mean though? And do I understand you right in that you wanted the song to be just metal? As for Oceansize, I'd probably suggest looking up their latest album Frames. Although there are similarly interesting tracks on their other releases ('The Charm Offensive' and 'Ornament/The Last Wrongs' on Everyone into Position, 'Massive Bereavement' on Effloresce and 'Size of an Ocean' on the Music For A Nurse EP).

AOR is Adult Orientated Rock - ie, not too offensive or wild, fairly middle of the road and conservative. And yes, I'd have prefered straight, ordinary metal. So little good metal around nowadays. I'll look up those albums you suggest and thanks again!

Regarding PT - I think a song like "Shadow" is a very straight-forward metal song. Other songs like "Futile" or instrumentals like "Orchidia", "Nil Recurring", "Wedding Nails" and "Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape" are a bit more 'proggy' metal. But they're not otherwise known for their straight-forward metal. They mostly mix the metal sound up with poppy, moody, accoustic or proggy passages. But I agree with you, there's little good metal around. Any recommendations?

If you want a straightup mix of proper ordinary metal just say the word and I'll cobble something together for you And Shen try looking into the Melodic Death Metal genre, plenty of quality bands around in there.Try the likes of Soilwork,Scar Symmetry,Kalmah and Sybreed to start.I'd be also for happy to make a mix for you.

I'm not that crazy about Death Metal or Speed Metal tbh. It took me a whole 6 years just to appreciate Opeth, and even now I far prefer their non-growling songs.
