JoeyB Posted 5 November 2008 Author Posted 5 November 2008 Virgin Media New you would pop up. having shit loads of problems with BT atm, been round 11 different desks that they say are customer services since 11am
hairy Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 sky are the best at the moment with unlimited d/ls, £10 per month if you have sky tv already. It really depends on what you get up to. Do you d/l? Do you use XBox Live? The only strong recommendation I can make is avoid at all costs Tiscali/Pipex.
Jimmy2Drags Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 Virgin easily.....BT is good until you want rid of it & then they try to make it impossible. For what you get too, Virgin is MILES better than anyone else atm. Plus with the speed that Virgin can run at, you get no lagging when you use the xbox/ps3 online. Don't go with AOL. They're well crap!

AmericanScott Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 Whatever you do, don't use TalkTalk. We got sucked into their scamming little ways now we're stuck with them. When we switched to them, it was fine. Then, the problems started and we wanted to drop them. They told us we couldn't swich because they put software on our line that dosen't allow us to leave. And if we wanted to, we would have to pay £70 to cancel th service. Their broadband sucks.

DOn't worry Talktalk i am going no where near. have you tried saying that the line belongs to BT so they are not allowed to put software on it?
hairy Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 They told us we couldn't swich because they put software on our line that dosen't allow us to leave. How do they put software on the line? As stated its BTs up to the box, then from there it comes with the house. There is nothing they can program. I do believe what they are doing is illegal. Phone them up and ask for your MAC code and see what they say.
Alexikokopops Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 Apart from they block ports and invoke their fair usage policy on you if they think you use it too much. You have to use it a serious amount for that to happen. It also only happens over a two hour peak usage period (i believe, don't quote me on that though). It slows it down a bit but you can still get much faster broadband (with up to 50MB being launched later this year, compared with the 8mb offered by most ISPs). Both Epitiro and Broadbandchoices.co.uk (independant sources) stated that Virgin Media delivered the fastest broadband speeds to customers (the actual or "throughput" speeds, not just the "up to..." speeds). My personal, actual unbiased view (which I had before I started working here), is that in cable areas VM is the best bet (you can get some right good deals through bundling, everyone I know used them at Uni and students are keen on a good deal), otherwise go with another ISP. Unfortunately I don't think Leicester's got that much cable coverage, so this post could be pretty useless.

There is nothing they can program.I do believe what they are doing is illegal. Phone them up and ask for your MAC code and see what they say. They say they are not allowed to give us our MAC code. The only way to obtain it is to switch back to BT on a one year contract (which we didn't like a few years ago). We've tried getting this code for a year now, they wont do it.

They have to give you that code. A law was passed recently to stop this behaviour. You do not have to switch back to BT either. You can go to anyone you want.
hairy Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 You have to use it a serious amount for that to happen. It also only happens over a two hour peak usage period (i believe, don't quote me on that though). But the peak times are when you want to use it the most. This is when they block the ports to XBox live for example to control the traffic. Whats the point in having XBox live if you cant use it when you want.
AmericanScott Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 That is illegal. They have to give you that code. A law was passed recently to stop this behaviour. You do not have to switch back to BT either. You can go to anyone you want. Try telling TalkTalk that! When you ask for a MAC code they start stuttering and put you on hold. Next time my broadband goes tits up, i'm ringing them and telling them what you've just said. We rang up Tiscali a few months back (to switch) and they told us that our line is inactive. They said "are you Talktalk customers?" That made my blood boil. I've sent something off to Watchdog about this. And ITV news are doing a segment on dodgy companies soon, we've got in touch with them too.
hairy Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 We rang up Tiscali a few months back (to switch) Dont do that! Tiscali are terrible. We were with them for a week before we told them to get lost. They block ports from noon to 3.00am. They tell you the fault is at your end etc etc etc. They suck big time. Stay with Talktalk rather than switch to their over subscribed service. Yes its cheap but you get what you pay for with them.
AmericanScott Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 Cheers for that We only wanted Tiscali for the TV service really. For the past month, TalkTalk has been okay. But this has happened before, we get good service for a few months, the it goes crap for a few months. Don't even get me started on the crossed line situation that took them 4 months to fix
Alexikokopops Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 But the peak times are when you want to use it the most. This is when they block the ports to XBox live for example to control the traffic. Whats the point in having XBox live if you cant use it when you want. I wasn;t aware that they actually block use of Xbox live. I just thought they slowed it down. It's not ideal, but you have to serious use the internet (ie all day long) for they to actually do it, and if you're on it all teh time then you have no worries about peak rate times. That's my (biased) view anyway, haha It is still the fastest in the country though
hairy Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 It's not ideal, but you have to serious use the internet (ie all day long) No. It depends on your ISP FUP as to how much you can use it.
Alexikokopops Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 No. It depends on your ISP FUP as to how much you can use it. Now I'm just lost. I'm just a data monkey, I don't actually know anything about these things I could tell you about the kind of people more likely to respond to our direct mailing though!

I've never tried to leave them though.
Daggers Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 At the moment I can't fault Virgin - and I download/upload a huge amount and haven't hit a FU limit as yet. I've said this many times though in many previous threads regarding the exact same thing.
