Car Insurance

Having passed my test a few months ago, I still havn't got my own car

I can afford to buy a decent enough car for about £800 - but insurance is way to expensive.

I know you can pay monthly for annual cover but can you simply just pay for 1 or 2 months insurance. Is this possible

Don't think so.

You can buy a year's cover and then cancel - just check you get a pro-rata return and no canx charges though.

If it's that much of a struggle, just don't bother... you won't be able to afford petrol and then before too long you'll want 4 new tyres etc...

Not that I know of.

I passed in February of this year and when I got my car I decided that Liverpool Victoria had the best deal for me, which I searched high and low through comparison websites.

They take £88 quid out of my account a month, I recently checked a few other insurance company's and for a renewal next Feb, the price drops down by a lot.

It really is that first year that kills people.

Looking forward to renewing mine in Feb and saving some cash.

I wouldn't mind paying that a month. It's just paying like the £1300 sort of money they are asking for in 1 some I can't do.

Does age matter how much you pay though? Because im 18 this sunday  will it drop down in price at all then?

Try 25 mate.

Hmmmm... I am not sure about that.

I was 22 when I passed, so I am not 100% sure if age plays a part in this.

I would try and get some quotes online and see what is best.

Also try Liverpool Victoria just in case.

Okay cheers for the feedback anyway lads.

If your parents drive you could always ask them to add you onto there policy, it would save you a lot.

The only drawback is that you won't build up your no claims which in time brings the price down.

Im already on my Mums car but it ends at the end of this month!

And i can only use it when she doesn't and can't go to college in it etc. I think getting my own car is now the only option.

Insure it 3rd party with a £1000 excess.

Admittedly it means if you crash you car - you've just gotta let it go, but there we are.

I know that 3rd party is the worst insurance you can get, but I don't really get what the £1000 excess means.

Could you explain please mate :D

If you make a claim on the insurance you'd pay the first £1000 and the insurance company would pay the rest.

Oh okay so basically its just the minimum you can get so it isn't illegal.

I don't think I would bother paying that when not even the car is worth that amount of money.

Not exactly, it just means for any claim, you pay the first £1000, but '3rd party' excludes your own vehicle (except for fire and theft). So if you smash into someone else, you pay 100% of the cost to fix your car, and the first £1000 of the other person's claim. It's the cheapest form of insurance that passes the legal requirement for insurance, so yes you're right there.

Highly recommended so far

What he said.

Beggars can't be choosers.

Like I said - motoring can't really be done on a shoestring at your age. Unless you really NEED it, don't bother.

Car Insurance is ridiculous, most of the time people rarely like to claim of their insurance anyway and would rather pay damages out of their own pocket. My insurance is close to £1100 with Norwich Union but that is only for 9 months and because my parents who have a policy with them bartered them down. 50% discount next year though if I stay no claims. :fc:

So get a massive excess hence reduction in premium and just don't claim.

It's more difficult for new drivers though, I struggled to find any insurers that were flexible with the excess. Those that were quoted simply ludicrous premiums for me. My excess is a fixed amount and can't be changed.

Fixed excess which can't be increased upwards.

Sounds like appalling underwriting to me.

Mind you, it's all call centres and retards these days.

That's motor for you.

New drivers are treated pretty poorly because as you know yourself insurance companies realise 17-25's are most likely to cause accidents and simply don't want the hassle. I basically just had to agree to whatever they quoted.

You're right about the call centres and retards too, I have nothing against India but having callcentres there is appalling customer service when the phone operators can barely talk English. Yes Norwich Union I'm pointing the finger at you. <_<

Just had my renewal form come through, 4 years no claims, £661 they want me to renew with Norwich Union. Got a few quote from other companies all cheaper. Best being with Direct Line for £489. So i'm going to phone Norwich Union when I get chance and see if they can match or better (Especially as I can get it cheaper with all the other companies I have tried).

I'm hoping with all the credit crunch companies will be fighting for my business and lower there prices, doubt it though.
