Legend_in_blue Posted 10 November 2008 Posted 10 November 2008 There's two options available. Both mentioned already. 1) Get your parents insured on the car and you down as a named driver. This is the cheapest way to go until you are 25 but it's risky if you're involved in an accident when it looks as if you're the sole driver of the car. 2) Up the excess to the max. A little crazy, but worth the risk? Possibly. Either way, risky. You will find as you get older you can play insurance companies off each other to bring quotes down. It's all a big swizz. You can always get a bit knocked off 'here or there'.

Ric Flair Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 My mrs has got insurance through Quinn's I think it's called and it's £380 a year. She hasn't even passed her test yet and she is only 22. Can't quite believe it myself, but she has. It's only 3rd party and all that, but still seems ridiculously cheap to me.
The People's Hero Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 I'm hoping with all the credit crunch companies will be fighting for my business and lower there prices, doubt it though. We're right at the bottom of a soft market so think again. The credit crunch = less capacity in the market = reinsurance rates have already hardened = sometime in the next 6 months you'll either have to pay extra for what you've currently got or they will reduce the cover/increase the excess for the same. The beauty of the insurance cycle. My mrs has got insurance through Quinn's I think it's called and it's £380 a year. She hasn't even passed her test yet and she is only 22. The People's Hero Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 25 pal. I'm 25 this month. I thought you were older than me. When are we going to meet up then sir?
Ric Flair Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 I'm 25 this month.I thought you were older than me. When are we going to meet up then sir? I thought I was 26, but it turns out i'm not just yet. If you can get yourself to Cheltenham Races this Saturday i'll be all over you like a cheap suit. If not, then let me know your travels and plans and i'll find you in a big game of hide and fookin seek.

The People's Hero Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 Chasing Rainbows - Shed SevenLet's chase it together, Gin and Tizer can be our catalyst. That has to be done. Let's pick a home game, pretend we're going to it, but instead just get tanked up on gin and tizer.

Hha, that would be amazing. We'd probably have to bring our own Tizer as i've not seen hide nor hair of the stuff in a boozer since the late 80's (and i'm making that up). Take a big 3 litre bottle in each in a satchel. I also think we have to fit the word 'Tizer' in to as many sentences as we can. ' Tizer hard, what with the credit crunch. That's why I bring my own '.
The People's Hero Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 You can get that new apple-tizer. But I prefer the original non-appley tizer. You know - tizer.

Tabou Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 I'm 25 this month.I thought you were older than me. When are we going to meet up then sir? I'm 21 a week on Friday. I expect a gift. A large one. Truckloads of Chilean Merlot will suffice.
The People's Hero Posted 13 November 2008 Posted 13 November 2008 I've arranged a concert for you Tabou, the Tizer Chiefs are playing. You'll be lucky to get much out of me this month, I've got to pay a bunch to AOL, BT and Natwest this month. Joy. When is your birthday anyway Tabou? And how can you be so much younger than me and yet earning so much more? Harsh.

Matt Posted 17 November 2008 Posted 17 November 2008 Hmmmmmmmmm just renewed. Direct Line £483.15 for the year, Fully Comp. I'm happy with the premium, but i'm struggling to get my head round the fact my excess is more expensive that the premium, After 4 years this is the first time I have actually picked up on this fact That is obviously where the insurance company's "con" you. Oh well hopefully the excess is something I never need worry about...

Oh well hopefully the excess is something I never need worry about... You might be able to reduce the excess by increasing your premium. It's likely however that your excess is the minimum they will do for drivers of your age. Most motor insurers at the moment are losing money, so it's hardly a con.

Most motor insurers at the moment are losing money, so it's hardly a con. I think I have the maximum excess tbh. It will be £350 volentry excess and £250 compulsory young person's excess. So £600 Excess in total. As said though hopefully i'll never need worry about it. Also the way I see it (Although it's already been mentioned the fact it is risky) is that the Premium is the only guaranteed price you will pay the excess is just a gamble, and to lower you excess and hike your premium up to me is pointless, Lowering your excess just a little bit can send you premium sky high so i'd obviously rather have what i'm guaranteed to pay as low as possible. Also i'm 21 (22 in June) so next year my young person's excess will be gone? Correct? (I read somewhere that young person's excess was until your 21...Or does it depend on the insurer?)

Varies by insurer. You usually have an increased compulsory excess of some sort until you're 25 with the major players at the moment. There's a lot of different wordings etc out there. The thing to do is take a massive excess, insure 3rd party and drive a sh it car. Oh and don't crash.
