Steve Howard The aim for us is to bounce straight back and be stronger than we were last season

Experienced striker Steve Howard may not have been on target in the third round of the FA Cup last weekend but he believes Leicester City's march back to the Championship is bang on schedule.

The Foxes battled to a respectable goalless draw with Crystal Palace at the Walkers Stadium last Saturday, which was a game that won't live long in the memory. However, Howard believes the stalemate against Neil Warnock's well-drilled side proved that Leicester will not be out of place if the League One leaders are promoted in May following last year's drop to their third tier of English football for the first time.

Givemefootball's Ian Clarkson spoke to the 32-year-old and found him in confident mood about the replay with the Eagles next week as well as City's promotion chances.

LEICESTER CERTAINLY DIDN'T LOOK OUT OF THEIR DEPTH AFTER THE DISAPPOINTMENT OF GOING DOWN LAST SEASON DID THEY?

It's always good to test yourself against these teams and I think we held our own. We competed and we're all feeling really positive that we are capable of doing something if we go up - we came out well.

NIGEL PEARSON TOOK OVER AS MANAGER IN THE SUMMER. IS IT FAIR TO SAY PROMOTION IS THE IMMEDIATE TARGET?

The aim for us is to bounce straight back and be stronger than we were last season. And we can see that's happening here, without a shadow of a doubt. The boss has got us playing good football.

HOW DID LAST SEASON AFFECT THE CLUB AS A WHOLE?

It was a real wake-up call for everyone at the club, getting relegated was a big disappointment,

But we have seen it as taking a step back to go two steps forward. There didn't seem to be a great gap between us and Palace and this was the ideal chance to compare the progress that we've made over the last six months.

WAS THE WAY YOU PLAYED LAST WEEKEND A WARNING TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP THAT LEICESTER ARE ON THE WAY BACK?

We didn't win but we took a huge positive out of it because we had some of the better chances. All we really lacked was a cutting edge. We matched them really well. If we go up then we'll be optimistic.

AND DO YOU PLAN TO BE PART OF THE TEAM IF LEICESTER ARE PROMOTED?

Oh definitely. I've got another two years left on my contract which is great and I plan to stay here.

IT WAS A TIGHT MATCH AGAINST CRYSTAL PALACE, WHAT ARE YOUR CHANCES OF MAKING THE FOURTH ROUND AND PLAYING WATFORD?

I thought we controlled most of the game and were disappointed not to win. As for me, I know I had the best chance of the game and put it over. But Palace played five in midfield, putting men behind the ball and that's a big compliment to us. We'll take confidence from this and hopefully go and win the replay.

I thought we controlled most of the game and were disappointed not to win. As for me, I know I had the only chance of the game and put it over. But Palace played five in midfield, putting men behind the ball and that's a big compliment to us. We'll take confidence from this and hopefully go and win the replay.

Pity Steve Howard can't play as good as he talks.
