andyh1884 Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 Players who's season hasn't been as good as last 9) Matt Oakley, Leicester City An unlikely selection perhaps but Oakley's descent has been steeper than most. In fact, to let you in on a little secret before we reach the final eight in our hall of shame, Oakley is the only player on the list who is no longer plying his trade in the Premier League. The midfielder can now be found in the third tier of English football, which - even if some might say is the right arena for his talent - represents a mighty fall from grace for a player who began last season as the captain of a Premier League outfit and scored the first goal of the league season after just five minutes of Derby's reintroduction. Alas, it's been all downhill ever since 15.05pm, August 11, 2007.

Alas, it's been all downhill ever since 15.05pm, August 11, 2007. That's a bit harsh. He did very well for Southampton and Derby, spending ten years in the Premier League. Last season he was crap, I admit that, but would he have been better on the right, like he is now?
Thracian Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 Had he written that last season it would have been hard to argue. Oakley was a disappointment and I said so along with many others. But to fire such a broadside this season is to suggest he's never watched the bloke for a start. Oakley has had an excellent season as player and captain and that is reflected in our position seven points clear of the play-off places. In his 24 starts so far he's been the model of consistency, contributing his fair share of goals and assists. There is every sign at this stage that he will lead us back into the Championship and it is hard to see how he could have realistically done much better. I've not read the rest, it is not a site I ever frequent, but that bit was so much wind-and-piss.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 It's a fair comment. It doesn't matter how well he's doing this season, he's in League One when he started last season captaining a Premiership team. He should be at number 1 in that list if anything. The others are all excellent Premiership players who are, at worst, off-form at the moment.
Scow Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 When he was at Southampton, I remember Strachan saying Oakley was good enough for the England squad. Link Edited for link.
Collymore Posted 9 January 2009 Posted 9 January 2009 When he was at Southampton, I remember Strachan saying Oakley was good enough for the England squad.Link Edited for link. yep he's up there with the all time greats like Lampard and Beattie
Shrenchel Posted 9 January 2009 Posted 9 January 2009 None of those players have gone downhill so badly as football365. Used to be a cracking little site.
Ultra Posted 10 January 2009 Posted 10 January 2009 None of those players have gone downhill so badly as football365. Used to be a cracking little site. Absolutely. The list in general is a complete joke. Oakley's form has improved massively since last season. There's no reason for him to be in the top 100, let alone the top 10.
davieG Posted 10 January 2009 Posted 10 January 2009 What is wrong is the objective of the list is unclear. It should either be a list of players under performing against their 'normal' standard or players that are playing below their perceived level. Oakley is clearly in the second category as is Tunchev, not that any of us are complaining.
Lillehamring Posted 10 January 2009 Posted 10 January 2009 pah - you can stick your 'underachieving' up yr arse!!!!!!!
The Reverend Posted 10 January 2009 Posted 10 January 2009 Another captains performance today - ran the show and got a goal for his efforts. What hes doing in League 1, only God knows.
