Jan Poortvliet Step Down.

Following discussions with Southampton Football Club, Jan Poortvliet has this evening stepped down from his role as Head Coach with immediate effect.

Poortvliet has taken the decision to stand down from his position in response to the Club's poor home form.

Mark Wotte has been asked by the Board to take over as Head Coach, and he will now take charge of the team for Tuesday's trip to Norwich.

The Club will be making no further comment at this time. A full press conference will be held on Monday at St Mary's Stadium.

Sacking Nigel Pearson was a silly mistake in hindsight ah?! :giggle:

Mind you providing we keep the form up this season and do get promoted, his real test starts next season proving himself in the Championship, but Southampton fans seemed to be happy with him last season and were abit annoyed when he got the push so that's a good sign.

He could have waited till they sacked him and would collect a hefty sum in compensation. So kudos to him for stepping down out of his own will.

Saints will still go down though.

A club struggling at the foot of Championship with very little money to spend and a sack-happy chairman hated by the fans. Only a madman would want that job.

Well to sack Pearson and appoint a complete unheard of in Poortvielt in the first place was just madness!

To be fair, hindsight is a great thing. Pearson as a Saints manager could've gone tits up as well to be honest. We gambled, and it's paying off, thus far.

Poortvleit isn't unheard of - he's basically a Dutch Bryan Robson!

He was cheaper than Pearson- you know what Rupert Lowe is like.

To be fair to Poortvliet, he does try and play good football, but he's just not up to that level of management and trades on his reputation as a player in the '70s as a squad-player during that Netherlands side - a promotion from the Dutch second-tier (aka. home of Sergio Hellings) isn't much in two decades.
