Gary Lineker Football Scholarship

A young footballer from Goa has been chosen to kick off the first Gary Lineker Football Scholarship. Lesten Martins, 15, who will travel to Britain Thursday to train with Leicester City Football Club and sample the life of a professional footballer in this country, said, “I can't wait to get to England and train with Leicester City.

“It is my dream to be a footballer, and I can't believe I'm going to have the chance to train with a professional team.”

The scholarship, sponsored by Air India, is part of the Leicester India Football Link, an initiative aimed forging closer links between India and the English city of Leicester, often called 'Little India' for its large Indian-origin population.

It was launched by LCFC Chairman Milan Mandaric, British High Commissioner to India Sir Richard Stagg and Indian-origin MP Keith Vaz, who represents a Leicester constituency.

It follows a hugely successful tour to Goa in October last year by a group of Under-14 footballers from Leicester.

During the tour, Lesten was identified by the coaches who accompanied the touring party as possessing great ability, and they chose him to receive this once in a lifetime opportunity, Vaz's office said Wednesday.

In addition to training with the club, Lesten will attend the Foxes final home game of the season against S****horpe and meet with Leicester City football legend and former England captain Gary Lineker.

Vaz said, “It's wonderful to be able to welcome this talented young man to Leicester. The players from Leicester enjoyed a fantastic tour last year and I'm delighted that the link between the two communities can be further strengthened through the Gary Lineker Scholarship.”

I remember when this link was announced and I thought that's probably the first and last time we hear about it, but, it's great to see that the link is in full flow and we have a young kid coming over to train with us, I hope it continues and we develop some good players, wouldn't it be great to have a South American link!!!

There's no money in Indian football, but with alot of investment and time (10 years) there maybe an opportunity to set up academies and unearth some good footballers!!

Although I doubt Leicester has the money, this just seems like a PR stunt!!

Am I imagining it, or didn't we have a link with Boca or somebody years ago when we were in the premier?

Notice how anyone is scared to reply to the above... I just gave a handful of my old tops to some local boys in Panjab. They looked bemused and asked me if these are the same tops worn by David Beckham. I said yes.

I remember seeing something that Comic Relief did a few years ago when they got football fans to donate all their old replica shirts to African kids. They did a little feature on it which followed (I think) Mark Lawrenson handing out the shirts around a village somewhere in Africa (can't remember which country). All the kids snaffled the old Man Ure and Liverpool tops straight away, but when Lawro offered out a F*rest shirt, none of them wanted it. lol

Back on topic though, it's good that we've got this link and hopefully the lad can learn a few things from training with us. It does surprise me that a country as large as India has never produced any really notable players. I'm guessing cricket's still the most popular sport by a long way, but with a population that size you'd think there'd be some Indian players playing in Europe's top domestic leagues by now.

Very true, although there is interest in football, the lack of coaches, training, facilities etc has made footy a backward sport!! From experience, punjab has many a footy team, and alot of enthuisasm for the sport, but there is no youth training or coaching of any level, so at senior school level where kids begin to play competitively, they are already years behind!!

Unfortunately it's not just a case of throwing money and hiring coaches etc, India being one of the most corrupt 'nations', alot of money will be syphened off through bureaucrats, MP's councillors and anyone else who has a vested interest!! I remember after the 1996 world cup and FIFA had pleadged millions to form a coaching regime, so they've had there fair share of funds etc!!
