My housemate went last night and sent me a text half way through saying, "this is better than I could possibly have imagined". The future is here. WCBO website - http://wcbo.org/content/index_en.html The basic idea in chessboxing is to combine the #1 thinking sport and the #1 fighting sport into a hybrid that demands the most of its competitors – both mentally and physically.In a chessboxing fight two opponents play alternating rounds of chess and boxing. The contest starts with a round of chess, followed by a boxing round, followed by another round of chess and so on. A contest consists of 11 rounds, 6 rounds of chess, 5 rounds of boxing. A round of chess takes 4 minutes. Each competitor has 12 minutes on the chess timer. A round of boxing takes 3 minutes. Between the rounds there is a 1 minute pause, during which competitors change their gear. The contest is decided by: checkmate (chess round), exceeding the time limit (chess round), retirement of an opponent (chess or boxing round), KO (boxing round), or referee decision (boxing round). If the chess game ends in a stalement, the opponent with the higher score in boxing wins. If there is an equal score, the opponent with the black pieces wins.

Apparently last night featured a rematch of a bout held last summer. One of the fighters records read: Fights 1, Won 1, Lost 0 while the other one's read Fights 1, Won 0, Lost 1. Go figure. They even have wrestling style names, for example another of the bouts was "Crazy Arms" vs "The Wardrobe". Brilliant. I'm still waiting for the full debrief from my mate, once I learn more I'll update in here. Next time there's a night, I am so all over it.

James. Posted 24 April 2009 Author Posted 24 April 2009 Here's an update from my mate who went last night after I asked him who won the bout between Crazy Arms and The Wardobe. Crazy Arms won, when the Wardrobe gave up during the last chess round. Although, to my mind, the sport of chessboxing itself was the real winner. They were amateurs, and so had slightly shorter boxing rounds, and wore head-guards. Strange in that it implies the other participants were professional chessboxers. Both of their nicknames were actually strangely appropriate. Crazy arms looked a bit like Peter Crouch, the Wardrobe more like Jan Molby. More than anything else that bout gave me hope that I could chessbox to at least their standard. Unlike the final bout, which was between two double-hard fighters. And aggressive chess players.

Unfortunately there are no details of further events on the website yet. There is however the London branch of the GBCBO which meet on Thursdays and Saturdays. I'm so tempted. I'm definitely a better chess player than a boxer but I reckon I have potential.

I think we should travel the country, following 'THE WARDROBE' in his quest to win his first ever match. We could drink cider (I hate cider but I'm only allowed cider and champagne at the moment), eat belly of pork and relax in the sunshine of various CHESSBOXING hosting towns. Any thoughts?
