Fosse Boy Posted 28 April 2009 Posted 28 April 2009 Thought it might be an idea for any of FT's amateur cricketers to have a thread to discuss the season, and their respective fortunes. Anyone else started playing yet? Played our first university league match on Sunday, lost by three wickets. Came in at 11 (we bat all the way down, I'm not that bad ) after a monumental collapse. Started playing sensibly before I got tempted by a rank full toss and spooned one up to silly mid-on for three. Opened the bowling, bowled OK but didn't get much out of the ball. No wickets. Our skipper got a five for, it was the first time he'd bowled in an actual match. Guess some people are just born lucky. The tight git still refused to get a jug in though. <_<
Lillehamring Posted 28 April 2009 Posted 28 April 2009 way too much jargon there, my essex chum.... simply isn't cricket!
Fosse Boy Posted 28 April 2009 Author Posted 28 April 2009 way too much jargon there, my essex chum.... simply isn't cricket! The gist of it is "we lost". Next game on Wednesday in South East London. Looking forward to it.

martyn Posted 28 April 2009 Posted 28 April 2009 Gutted I can't play this year owing to injury, 1 year after having a really decent season last year (528 runs at 52.8). Sure i'll still pop down occasionally for some banter in the bar.

Sods Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 Season starts this saturday! Love waking up on a saturday for Cricket. Just been promoted so this year could be tough, our team is more interested in the beer though. Which is a good thing.
gazzer Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 season started last saturday. joined a new team. haven't been selected yet.
Fosse Boy Posted 30 April 2009 Author Posted 30 April 2009 Who does everyone play for out of interest? I'm at Old Eastonians (formerly Great Easton) at Rockingham Castle when I'm back home. Played (and lost) our second uni game of the season today against Goldsmiths College. Eight not out (in an innings of 81 all out!) and first wicket of the season in the bag though, so not too disappointed with my own performance.
Thracian Posted 30 April 2009 Posted 30 April 2009 The tight git still refused to get a jug in though. <_< How the hell did he get to be captain of a university side? My last skipper was no Botham but he did put loaded cider barrels around the boundary and his good wife, Maggie, ensured we were all fed and watered like lords. Happy days.
C-man Posted 30 April 2009 Posted 30 April 2009 My team's just been promoted to the first division of the Mutual League in Leicester. We're completely out of our depth. I played on Saturday, my first game before I went back to Uni, and the team was a shambles. We turned up with 8 players against one of the best sides in the league. They got 194-9 from 35 overs, my figures were something like 8-0-36-0. I was pretty unlucky not to get at least one wicket. Got one decent catch though. I refused to open because I had only netted once all winter and I thought I'd be useless, so I managed to talk my way into batting 4. That was a waste of time, we were 2 down before 2 overs. I managed to steady the ship with the skipper, I batted 18 overs for 13 not out. A defensive show, yes, but one that annoyed them slightly. Looking forward to playing again in a few weeks. EDIT: Yeahh, we were all out for 40.

At one point yesterday we were 12-5! I was doing the scorebook at the time so it was pretty hectic!
maddog Posted 30 April 2009 Posted 30 April 2009 Used to play cricket but then realised what a shit game it was. You bat a bit get out, then stand around in the field twiddling your thumbs most of the time, bowling 4 overs or so. Can't stand the game now, i especially hate it when theres supposed to be a game on, everyone sort of stands around staring at the ground, before concluding lets hang around and have a pitch inspection in 2 hours. Then lingering around like Michael Jackson in a playground walking up and down the wicket, concluding the match is on. But then it starts spitting and they declare lets have another pitch inspection in 2 hours again! Until finally after spending the worst 4 hours of your life sitting in a grotty, wooden, rotting pavillian, its decided the match will be called off.

EDIT: Yeahh, we were all out for 40. Made my debut for your boys yesterday mate ,1st time id played 11 a side since school. We hit 150 all out but lost by 7 wickets . I came in at number 11 and hit a square cut for 4 , made another 2 then got caught behind. Bowled few overs and didnt do too bad . Got praised for my diving stops in the field . Been selected for Saturday so must have done ok
Fosse Boy Posted 4 May 2009 Author Posted 4 May 2009 Bludgeoned 22 not out in three overs yesterday. I can't stand facing short bowling in nets but in the middle I just seem to lap it up. Coincidentally, we won by 22 runs.
