James. Posted 15 June 2009 Posted 15 June 2009 My Mum and Stepdad live in Cyprus. In fact, I have just got back from there. Part of my holiday was spent trying to sort out BBC1 on their computer, to no avail. I've Googled this loads and I get bombarded with shit about proxy servers, VPN's and loads of other crap I don't understand. Can anyone who is currently able to watch BBC1 abroad for free through a live internet stream let me know how they do it? Eternally yours James x And yeah if any Mod wants to get pedantic then feel free to move this to the Computers Forum, just thought it might get a wider audience in here. Cheers.
Shrenchel Posted 15 June 2009 Posted 15 June 2009 Virtually impossible mate imo, without spending some cash at least. Wasted so much of my life going through those bastard websites claiming they can get you iplayer but none of them. Ive read some forums tho saying if you buy yourself a permanent VPN (or VPL maybe or summin else that sounds like a tropical STD I cant remember exactly) then you can get it work. As for watching it live, streaming websites pop up now and then that have the British channels on but usually fook off after a couple of days.

Not sure that it's pedantic but I think I'll delete 2 of the 3 topics you started on this if that's ok.

That pretty much sums up the fruits of my labour over the past few days. TV Ants apparently had a feed but not any more. And yeah I heard that a VPN will work but they don't want to spend any money as it's only really a temporary fix before they move somewhere that will have a massive fuck off satellite dish, thus solving all their problems. Not sure that it's pedantic but I think I'll delete 2 of the 3 topics you started on this if that's ok. Stupid internet. Cheers mate.
Shrenchel Posted 15 June 2009 Posted 15 June 2009 Just remembered as well. If they're willing to pay then I think you can just get Sky. Apparently you're not really supposed to but Sky just turn a blind eye to it and it does work. Think you need an address in the UK though. Not really sure of the method or how it works but the expat businessmen ****** that hang around in the pub where I go to watch the english football are always banging on about how they've got it. Spain is a bit closer to England though so maybe that's a factor, fook knoews. Edit, just seen your other post. Ignore all that then.

Yeah, you might not have seen my other post but they're moving somewhere with a dish soonish and can pick up all the Sky channels they need that way. The dishes are literally about 5 metres in diameter. Fucking huge. But they want decent TV so fair enough I guess. Nice one for the info though.
Monk Posted 15 June 2009 Posted 15 June 2009 No idea if this would work, but if you put 'gotomypc' on a UK computer and connected to it abroad, surely you could just watch iplayer? Issue would be that you need a computer on in the uk 24/7 to do so. lavrentis Posted 15 June 2009 Posted 15 June 2009 Download a program called FilmOn. It should cover their needs, it also has Sky Sports News on it.
Shrenchel Posted 15 June 2009 Posted 15 June 2009 Download a program called FilmOn. It should cover their needs, it also has Sky Sports News on it. Do you use it? Seems to list BBC News and Parliament as being the only BBC channels broadcasting. Then apart from the Sky News channels it seems be just shopping, hobbies and God shit that you find up in the 700s on your digital box.

James. Posted 15 June 2009 Author Posted 15 June 2009 lavrentis you're an absolute bloody genius. It's working fine for them over in Cyprus. This must be one of the best kept secrets ever. Over an hour of scouring the internet over the last few days and not one mention of this little bit of software. Nice one.

The thing that annoys me about it is the advertisement before the channel starts, "FIIIILLLLMOOOOOONN".
Lillehamring Posted 15 June 2009 Posted 15 June 2009 Haa, nice. The thing that annoys me about it is the advertisement before the channel starts, "FIIIILLLLMOOOOOONN". sensational. just watched 'have i got news for you' - dropped out once for about 30 seconds, a couple of glitches but, again, sensational. hope it stays the course.
Lillehamring Posted 15 June 2009 Posted 15 June 2009 ha! and the itv local news is east midlands (at least the weather was) - nice, footy news ahoy!
Shrenchel Posted 15 June 2009 Posted 15 June 2009 Mate this is quality. fook knows why any of the speccy bastards on the thousands of tech forums I read didn't know about this.
lavrentis Posted 15 June 2009 Posted 15 June 2009 fook yeah, barely legals! It is actually legal, they used to have Sky Sports 1 on there but Sky told them to take it down, so they made a deal with them, so they have SSN on there now. I imagine the same has happened with the other channels.
Ultra Posted 16 June 2009 Posted 16 June 2009 Quality pictures. May well use this for European matches next season...
Darkzzz_ Posted 16 June 2009 Posted 16 June 2009 Can we make him Sir Lav now? I am always on the look out for decent sites like this myself. Even though I reside in the UK. Still a very handy bookmark. Legend killer!
James. Posted 7 July 2009 Author Posted 7 July 2009 Apparently there's a problem with the filmon.com site... anyone else having issues? Are there any alternatives that Sir Lavrentis is aware of?
