Granno Posted 30 June 2009 Author Posted 30 June 2009 Jeez, break it to me gently James and Shen Nah, thanks for taking the time to review, hopefully my next mix will have more strength in depth, I'm already planning it
Trav Le Bleu Posted 1 July 2009 Posted 1 July 2009 Armageddondere! 1. Nobody does it better - Radiohead It's Radiohead covering a naff song. Equivilant of Dr Bernard performing a heart-transplant on Hitler. 2. Headstart for Happiness - The Style Council I never really liked the Style Council and I can't stand Paul "Dad Rock" Weller. If he was only as good as he thinks he is, the world would be an amazing place! 3. How Far We've Come - Matchbox Twenty Earnest. Too earnest. Who you trying to kid? You don't give a damn! (wait... that would be cool...) 4. The Past Recedes - John Frusciante One man and his guitar. Which can be good if there is a remarkable voice involved, some amazing fingerwork or a poignant song. No such luck here. 5. All of the Words - Kutless Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!! In the genres section this is listed as Christian Rock - which is interesting as the lyrics would probably be considered blasphemous by many who don't understand allegory. However, it's quite a nice little tune which I enjoyed. 6. Great Romances of the 20th Century - Taking Back Sunday 7. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger Nice little sing-a-long tune with a bit of lalalalalalalability. 8. Thought I Knew - Weezer There's a lot of Weezer been faffing around these mixs - surely we all know Weezer. I know I like Weezer, just not enough to ever get their stuff. 9. Rooster - Alice in Chains Would? Remember Would? I wouldn't. (ok, so I own Would - I was young and foolish, ok!) 10. The Road I Must Travel - The Nightwatchman As this kind of song go this was quite good, but I think they are all too easy to do and common place (folk music is after all the music of the common man). Still, I found it a grower. 11. Can't Find my way home (Acoustic Version) - Blind Faith I have a cover version of this by The Swans, which has female vocals. Thats about the only difference. Top song! 12. The Day The World Went Away - Nine inch Nails Sometime Trent Reznor is genius, which means sometimes he isn't and this was one of the isn't times. Get a hold of Pretty Hate Machine if you like NiN, it's their best album in my opinion (for what that's worth!) 13. Portions for Foxes - Rilo Kiley I would usually dismiss this kind of song offhand, but it's got something likeable about it, a little, as the French say, "I don't quite know what." Enjoyable. 14. Remebering Sunday - All Time Low Yeah... go home. 15. Insincerity as an artform - Further Seems Forever I'm all emoed out right now, sorry. ________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________ Cheers Granno, a little too heavy on the emo, but a couple of interesting highlights, so appreciated. Thanks!
Granno Posted 2 July 2009 Author Posted 2 July 2009 Holy shit. Talk about slating it Cheers anyway for taking the time to listen to it Trav.
shen Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 Holy shit. Talk about slating it Cheers anyway for taking the time to listen to it Trav. You ain't seen a slating review yet then Don't take our opinions too seriously, some of us are harsh by nature
Granno Posted 2 July 2009 Author Posted 2 July 2009 You ain't seen a slating review yet then Don't take our opinions too seriously, some of us are harsh by nature It's allllright. I'm not expecting everyone to like everything
Trav Le Bleu Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 Holy shit. Talk about slating it Cheers anyway for taking the time to listen to it Trav. Sorry, glad you weren't too offended - everyone's different. I always try to be honest as possible. Take my bro-in-law for instance. Ask him about ANY film he's just seen and he will tell you that it was good. He's no use as a human barometer. Besides, in general, the majority of the mixes aren't to my particular taste. It's about the 2 or 3 gems in there and yours did have a couple to its credit.
Joe. Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 1. Nobody does it better - Radiohead I do like Radiohead, but I'm not the biggest fan of this cover if I'm honest. Just not impressed by Thom Yorke's vocals in this track, seem a bit too whiny, even for Radiohead standards. 2. Headstart for Happiness - The Style Council Always like whatever I've heard of Paul Weller's, and I suppose it's a bit criminal that I've never really delved very far into his work. I enjoyed this anyway, always like a decent acoustic track which I generally appreciate a bit more. 3. How Far We've Come - Matchbox Twenty Sounds like something that would appear on a Shrek soundtrack or something. Pretty Counting Crows-esque, which is fine in small doses when you're in the mood for it for me. Not really probably something I'd choose to listen to again, but I didn't dislike it. 4. The Past Recedes - John Frusciante I'm never going to criticise John Frusciante, such a hugely talented musician. I'm not overly excited by his solo material from what I've heard so far, but it's alright. I liked the solo part just over half-way through. Decent track here without really being anything spectacular. 5. All of the Words - Kutless Haha, I bet Nussul bloody loved this one. Doesn't really do a lot for me really, just a bit bland. You can just imagine this song to come with a horribly cheesy video and a lead singer whose eyes are permanently closed in a "moment". 6. Great Romances of the 20th Century - Taking Back Sunday I don't know whether I should consider these a guilty pleasure or not, but I've always liked them. I can remember when a Decade Under The Influence came out in the days when I used to watch the music channels for hours after school and getting really excited by it. They're absolutely gash live though, don't bother spending money going to see them. This isn't my favourite track by them, but I still like it. 7. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger I've definitely heard this before somewhere. Is it a television theme tune or something? Well this is quite annoying now actually. Anyway, I actually liked the track, pretty good. WHERE IS IT FROM?!!! 8. Thought I Knew - Weezer Another good song from a very good album. Not listened to it for a good while actually though, since before it came out actually. 9. Rooster - Alice in Chains The first two minutes are a bit of a chore, but it's not too bad after that. Just a bit too long for me to enjoy at over 6 minutes long though! 10. The Road I Must Travel - The Nightwatchman Another superb guitarist here in Tom Morello. Never actually listened to any of this particular group, only ever heard of them before. A bit disappointing actually, sounds like something that should be on Finnegan's mix rather than on here! Pure folk filth. 11. Can't Find my way home (Acoustic Version) - Blind Faith Started promisingly, but the vocals just gradually became a bit tiresome for me. It's not that bad though honestly, just nothing that screams 'wow' at me. Got a nice rhythm to it anyway, foot tapping all the way. 12. The Day The World Went Away - Nine inch Nails I'm glad you put these on here actually, because I don't think I can recall one track of theirs I've heard. They're just one of those bands that I've heard so much about but have never actually taken the time to listen to a track of theirs. Bit of a tease this one really isn't it... I was just waiting for it to properly explode, and it never came. 13. Portions for Foxes - Rilo Kiley The female vocals help this one a bit actually, because when I was listening to the intro I thought it was just going to be another of those namby-pamby tracks like track 5. Not really my cup of tea though really, just lacks a bit of cutting edge with nothing really to get excited about. 14. Remebering Sunday - All Time Low Yeah fuck it I like this one actually. Sometimes I'm a bit of a sucker for American acoustic stuff, so this is pretty decent for me. 15. Insincerity as an artform - Further Seems Forever Wasn't a huge fan of this to end it really. Just a bit too bland and poncey American for my liking. Actually that sounds a bit harsh, sorry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pretty decent mix here Granno, there wasn't really one track on here that I couldn't stand listening to, apart from the Alice in Chains song which I didn't make the end of. Will definitely be keeping a few off of here now to add to the library. Just hoping for a mix free from namby-pamby nonsense though next time, and then you'll be onto a right winner. Cheers. EDIT: Fucking Peep Show!
General Smuts Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Heard a few of these tracks before but here goes: 1. Nobody does it better - Radiohead - Never gotten into Radiohead. 6/10 2. Insincerity as an artform - Further Seems Forever - Again i used to love FSF when i was emo. This is not bad. 7/10 Not bad, nicely interspersed with emo 6/10.
General Smuts Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Tho this has never stopped Smuts. Because of that, nobody will do his. OI! I'm doing em all now! I'm at least 6 deep already!
Libertine Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 OI! I'm doing em all now! I'm at least 6 deep already! Word to the wise, try and word your reviews better. Fair enough if you don't like something, but it's not nice when someone calls something 'awful' etc. Especially when you've put thought into doing these things.

Yeah i do apologise for being harsh but i've just gone through all of these in one go and have sat through a lot of stuff i haven't liked at all. Unfortunately the more im doing the more harsh im becoming.
shen Posted 10 July 2009 Posted 10 July 2009 Jesus. 0/10 for Alice in Chains. It's just Smuts! In fact, if he doesn't rate it, it's probably good
General Smuts Posted 10 July 2009 Posted 10 July 2009 Haha! You're probably right Shen. Sorry Granno - i've never like Alice In Chains, nothing against you at all. There one of a number of bands i hate for very little reason at all. See also Incubus, Muse etc.
stez Posted 12 July 2009 Posted 12 July 2009 no body does it better - radiohead fantastic! best cover of the best bond theme, ever! head start for happiness - the style council never liked the style council, in the olden days...still don't! how far we've come - matchbox20 never been keen on 'ernest' music, i could see him hanging onto the mic stand, (head tilted) or all he was worth. the past recedes - john frusciante i liked this, although he sounded like my dad singing at church. all of the words - kutless of all the words to crow-bar in; 'true' to rhyme with 'you' great romances of the 20th century - taking back sunday the word 'complairrrnin' made me skip forwards, i hate that kind of singing flagpole sitta - harvey danger i liked this loads, maybe because it sounded a bit like the wonder stuff thought i knew - weezer was ok, but it's no buddy holly rooster - alice in chains this, i liked...but i like alice in chains anyway, must get the cd's back out. the road i must travel - the nightwatchman i liked this too, but would've sounded better less polished and with an irish singer can't find my way home - blind faith didn't like this, is the non-acoustic version rockier? i couldn't get that pervy album cover out of my head either. the day the world went away - NiN alright, but alice in chains are better portions for foxes - rilo kiley sounds like a demo, alright though all time low - remembering sunday this was ok, reminds me of a beautiful south/proclaimers mash-up further seems forever - insincerity as an art form had my foot tapping, which would no doubt, offend them greatly, i did like it though
