shen Posted 23 June 2009 Posted 23 June 2009 Downloaded, but it might be a few days before I review this. Have a 30-hour essay that starts tomorrow...
Libertine Posted 23 June 2009 Posted 23 June 2009 Thought I kneeeew ya better thaaaan... Downloading now.
Asha Posted 23 June 2009 Posted 23 June 2009 1. Nobody does it better - Radiohead Ahh, radiohead. Previously I've found them a bit hit and miss. I love the song Fake Plastic Trees, but Paranoid Android for example, I just find it annoying. Unfortunately I found this more of the latter. I find the vocals too strong in a negative way. 4/10 2. Headstart for Happiness - The Style Council I like this, quite lively but still relatively simple. 7/10 3. How Far We've Come - Matchbox Twenty Love the optimistic lyrics ...Nah, I actually really like this...think I've heard this before somewhere listening to it, and I've sent it straight to my phone. Quality 9/10 4. The Past Recedes - John Frusciante Ah, Frusciante. I've heard one of his songs before in this CD swap...Flynny's? Libertine's, maybe? Can't remember...but I remember thinking he was a bit meh at the time, and this hasn't really changed my mind. It's not a bad song as such, I just wouldn't buy his albums. 6/10 5. All of the Words - Kutless Initially, the first few seconds of the intro made me think of Lady Sovereign... No idea why. Hang on...did I? Did I just hear Jesus? Is this a christian song? Wow. Has actually developed into a great track, easy to listen to and I'll probably be the only one to say this but very meaningful lyrics to me. Can't give it anything else really. 10/10 6. Great Romances of the 20th Century - Taking Back Sunday Like this a lot, lively but not overpowering. 8/10 7. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger This reminds me of something....thinking about it, in some way which I can't really explain the tune is reminding me of 'Times like these' by Foo Fighters....oh hang on...I definately recognise this...pretty sure it's from a TV show or something...it'll come to me. I like it though, definately my sort of song. 9/10. Ah, I've got it. Peep show. 8. Thought I Knew - Weezer I like 'Tired of Sex' from a previous CD swap. Pretty sure it was Libertine's, but my memory is shit. Doesn't quite have the same wow effect that had on me, but it's a nice song still, more of a chilled out song I found and it worked for me. 7/10 9. Rooster - Alice in Chains 6 minutes+....hmm, will take a bit of commitment to battle that out. Ah, not so bad, 6/10. I'm glad I worked out Rooster was the song name and not the band before I posted. 10. The Road I Must Travel - The Nightwatchman A bit different but I like. 7/10 11. Can't Find my way home (Acoustic Version) - Blind Faith Hmm, Decent. 6/10 12. The Day The World Went Away - Nine inch Nails fook me, that made me shit bricks. It was gradually getting quieter and quieter and I thought it was the end of the song and then BAM, it explodes into life. Didn't expect that at all, but a nice suprise 7/10 13. Portions for Foxes - Rilo Kiley And the talkin' leads to touchin'....and the touchin' leads to sex ...nice lyrics.7/10 14. Remebering Sunday - All Time Low Instantly like this, I think the lead singer sounds quite a bit like Brendon Urie of Panic at the disco. I'd happily listen to this again. 8/10 15. Insincerity as an artform - Further Seems Forever Decent way to end...my initial thoughts were that it needed a bit more pace, but listening again i'm not sure. Like the tune in general though. 7/10 Overall, I'd say this mix was a hit for me, matey. There's a couple I love, I'd listen to a high number of them again, and to be honest I feel I've been a bit harsh on a couple as well, and like Libertine's I'll give some of the tracks a second listen at another time to see if my mind changes at all. Thanks for this, was a very good listen.
Libertine Posted 23 June 2009 Posted 23 June 2009 4. The Past Recedes - John FruscianteAh, Frusciante. I've heard one of his songs before in this CD swap...Flynny's? Libertine's, maybe? Can't remember...but I remember thinking he was a bit meh at the time, and this hasn't really changed my mind. It's not a bad song as such, I just wouldn't buy his albums. 6/10 8. 7/10 a) Me, slag. b) Brian Bell (geetar) is singing this track and it's a more recent one. Just for the info like.
Asha Posted 23 June 2009 Posted 23 June 2009 a) Me, slag. Ah right, that was about the only one I can't remember off yours.
Granno Posted 23 June 2009 Author Posted 23 June 2009 Overall, I'd say this mix was a hit for me, matey. Mark Posted 23 June 2009 Posted 23 June 2009 1. Nobody does it better - Radiohead Not the biggest Radiohead song but it's ok 5/10 2. Headstart for Happiness - The Style Council Didn't think much to that 3/10 3. How Far We've Come - Matchbox Twenty catchy chorus but not really my thing! 4/10 4. The Past Recedes - John Frusciante Hmm, I preferred his song on Libs mix! 3/10 5. All of the Words - Kutless See 3! 4/10 6. Great Romances of the 20th Century - Taking Back Sunday Now then, I will happily admit to loving this song, my favourite band and album Summer 2002! Last minute is brilliant. I'm surprised they are still around now with the rubbish they are now making. 9/10 7. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger I know this one too, just not a fan of it! 3/10 8. Thought I Knew - Weezer Hmm, everything I hear from Weezer after the blue album sounds rubbish compared. 3/10 9. Rooster - Alice in Chains Never ever got into this grungy sound really. 4/10 10. The Road I Must Travel - The Nightwatchman This was alright, feels like it should be on Finners mix though 5/10 11. Can't Find my way home (Acoustic Version) - Blind Faith As above it was alright, just lacks something 5/10 12. The Day The World Went Away - Nine inch Nails Not keen on much they've done after the downward spiral, so struggled to get into that. I will give this one another listen though 4/10 13. Portions for Foxes - Rilo Kiley See 5! 4/10 14. Remebering Sunday - All Time Low First few minutes were abit rubbish, but that last minute or so was nice with the girls vocals. 5/10 15. Insincerity as an artform - Further Seems Forever Another song I have heard, excellent song and good closer. The album this songs off is one of my favourites of that genre, falling just behind The Moon is Down by the same band! 8/10
Libertine Posted 23 June 2009 Posted 23 June 2009 1. Nobody does it better - Radiohead 6/10 I've never liked this like a lot of people seem to. It's a decent enough cover and I love Radiohead, but I just don't get the big whoop about doing a version of something with a bit of distortion slapped on. That and I don't much care for the song in general. 2. Headstart for Happiness - The Style Council 7/10 Nice little track there. 3. How Far We've Come - Matchbox Twenty 7/10 Yeh decent. Rob Thomas is a bit of a dick, but it's not bad. 4. The Past Recedes - John Frusciante 8/10 NOM. Frooshman. I love the man obviously. Gorgeous solo. 5. All of the Words - Kutless 6/10 I know Nussul love this. It's okay, bit M.O.R for me. Cliche, but pleasant enough chords changes. 6. Great Romances of the 20th Century - Taking Back Sunday 5/10 Does nothing for me to be honest. Don't hate it... 7. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger 7/10 Haha. Classic. Peep Show theme. Never heard the whole song but liked it. 8. Thought I Knew - Weezer 7/10 Weezer are one of my favourite bands. Brian sings this and is one of the men that I'd go gay for. Not as good as a Rivers track but one of my favourites from the Red album. Really simple, decent song. 9. Rooster - Alice in Chains 8/10 Alice In Chains have always interested me, but I've still not checked them out properly. Downloaded Bones a while back but haven't listened yet. Awesome kick-in. 10. The Road I Must Travel - The Nightwatchman 8/10 Morello's the mayun. Really liked this actually. Haven't checked his Nightwatchman stuff out, may well do now. 11. Can't Find my way home (Acoustic Version) - Blind Faith 8/10 Awesome vocals. Really nice song. 12. The Day The World Went Away - Nine inch Nails 8/10 Trent's the man. I'd intercourse him and I love it. 13. Portions for Foxes - Rilo Kiley 8/10 Jenny Lewis is fricking hot. I liked this song, didn't really expect to. 14. Remebering Sunday - All Time Low 5/10 Don't like the vocals at all. Lame lyrics too. 15. Insincerity as an artform - Further Seems Forever 5/10 Meh. Was alright. Didn't do much for me.
Jay Posted 24 June 2009 Posted 24 June 2009 1. Nobody does it better - Radiohead Radiohead and Bond together what more can you ask for!! 2. Headstart for Happiness - The Style Council I am a massive Weller fan saw him last Friday in Sherwood Forest brilliant venue brilliant gig!! The Modfather is a genius although some style council stuff was a little errr rubbish although he always plays Shout to the Top live his solo and Jam stuff is just better in my opinion. 3. How Far We've Come - Matchbox Twenty hate this band. 4. The Past Recedes - John Frusciante I think I said the same to the track in Libertines mix it's just a bit bland and doesn't seem to have enough edge for me. 5. All of the Words - Kutless I don't like the middle of the road much prefer life on the edge or in the gutter so this doesn't appeal to me. 6. Great Romances of the 20th Century - Taking Back Sunday don't like this band 7. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger so that's where it came from!!! I love Peep show as a result this song gets through!! 8. Thought I Knew - Weezer I like Weezer and own this so it's a thumbs up from me!! 9. Rooster - Alice in Chains I own this as well so another thumbs up 10. The Road I Must Travel - The Nightwatchman Tom Morello album that has some great songs and yes you guessed it I own this as well so another thumbs up!! 11. Can't Find my way home (Acoustic Version) - Blind Faith This ones ok to be fair 12. The Day The World Went Away - Nine inch Nails I love NIN and another already in my collection!! 13. Portions for Foxes - Rilo Kiley good god no!! not for me 14. Remebering Sunday - All Time Low sounds to much like everything else, nothing unique and a bit to clean for me. 15. Insincerity as an artform - Further Seems Forever not for me!! really don't like this sort of Americana music some great songs although I do own most of the ones I like on here!
Trav Le Bleu Posted 27 June 2009 Posted 27 June 2009 Downloaded - suppose I'd better listen to it now
Asha Posted 27 June 2009 Posted 27 June 2009 Downloaded - suppose I'd better listen to it now Do it! Definately a good way to spend an hour.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 27 June 2009 Posted 27 June 2009 Do it! Definately a good way to spend an hour. Well if it's got the official Nussul seal of approval it's got to be good!
Asha Posted 27 June 2009 Posted 27 June 2009 Well if it's got the official Nussul seal of approval it's got to be good! Aye, but my own mix got my approval, and we all know how that turned out.
shen Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 Finally got round to listen to this earlier today to get an impression as I didn't know what to expect. I'll hopefully get a review done tomorrow
Unabomber Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 Nice mix Granno. Do I have to go and review mixes or can I can I go and create my own?
Libertine Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 Nice mix Granno.Do I have to go and review mixes or can I can I go and create my own? You'll have to review at least the majority of them before you do one.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 You'll have to review at least the majority of them before you do one. Tho this has never stopped Smuts.
Libertine Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Tho this has never stopped Smuts. Because of that, nobody will do his.
shen Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Sorry for the delay, I lost my internet at home yesterday 1. Nobody does it better - Radiohead Don't quite like this. The song is nothing out of the ordinary, and the live recording detracts a bit. Didn't do more for me second or third time around 2. Headstart for Happiness - The Style Council Easy listening, quite agreable. It's something that would fit a nice hot summer day like this one, but I'd have to be in the mood. 3. How Far We've Come - Matchbox Twenty I really don't like his voice, and the music drums are much too hectic. Doesn't cut it for me. 4. The Past Recedes - John Frusciante Non-offensive song on the whole of it. It's the type of music I'd put on as background music if I had guests over (read: it does all it can not to stand it) 5. All of the Words - Kutless Oh no no no. I loathe this type of music, sorry 6. Great Romances of the 20th Century - Taking Back Sunday Not for me at all either. I find the vocals terrible I'd take Coheed & Cambria over these any time! 7. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger I know this, but have no idea from where. A lot more enjoyable already, it's simple, energetic and straight-forward and doesn't have cringe-worthy vocals so it's all good. 8. Thought I Knew - Weezer I really don't get the fuss about Weezer. It's a generic ballad with sub-par vocals in my opinion. Again easy-listening though. So far it's been a bit too easy for my tastes... 9. Rooster - Alice in Chains Ah this is a completely forgotten tune! I remember it being a popular Danish 90's rock band that did this because they sound so similar. Ooops! Oh and a few hours after listening to this mix the first time I went to see Terminator Salvation and was a bit freaked out it made an appearance in it! I like it even if it drags on for a bit too long. The nostalgia feeling was nice! 10. The Road I Must Travel - The Nightwatchman Shouldn't this have been on Finners' mix? I was left a bit 'meh' at this though. 11. Can't Find my way home (Acoustic Version) - Blind Faith The occasional hi-hat is a bit too loud, or maybe it's the vocals that are mixed very low. This effort is decent though, I did enjoy it. 12. The Day The World Went Away - Nine inch Nails The Fragile is a brilliant album! Probably my favourite NiN album in close competition with DS and FDTS. This track is not one of the better ones on the album though I'm afraid. 13. Portions for Foxes - Rilo Kiley Hmmm heard this before as well. No idea where though (again!!). It leaves me quite cold unfortunately. 14. Remembering Sunday - All Time Low The vocals are just too 'teenie'. The voice is flat, it sounds like so many others and the US accent kills it. Oh dear, now the female 'Lavigne' vocals kicked in... A shame, as I think it sounded promising to begin with. 15. Insincerity as an artform - Further Seems Forever See above. Different song, but the same applies this. ----------------------- To be brutally honest, I expected more of this mix. A tad too many duffers for my taste. I had no idea what you'd come up with reading your mostly favourable reviews of the other mixes so far, but I think you have lots more in the tank than this effort suggests. The Alice in Chains track along with Harvey Danger and NiN were nice throwbacks, and when Radiohead pops up you know the person isn't on the completely wrong track Sorry if this was all a bit harsh, but I had high hopes for this one which made it all a bit anti-climactic. Here's hoping I can get more out of your next mix!
James. Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 1. Nobody does it better - Radiohead Well it's Radiohead so obviously I love it. Not a particularly original choice but a great song nevertheless. 8 2. Headstart for Happiness - The Style Council Pretty inoffensive song but it doesn't exactly make me want to go and find out about this band. A bit too bland for me but at least it's not painful to listen to. Summery as well which might be partly why you chose it. 5 3. How Far We've Come - Matchbox Twenty Ner, I don't like this at all. Voice does my head in and it sounds far too generic for me. This is the sort of music that makes me dislike so much guitar based music. Sorry. 4 4. The Past Recedes - John Frusciante Enjoyed the song on Libertine's mix, especially as I'd never heard of him before. Again, this is a decent tune, he's got a good voice and the blend with the acoustic guitar is well done. Never going to blow me away but it's decent. 6 5. All of the Words - Kutless Sounds like something from NSSL's mix. My view on this is pretty much the same as that Matchbox Twenty song. Just not for me at all. 4 6. Great Romances of the 20th Century - Taking Back Sunday Fuck me that shouty shit is horrible. Got to skip this one, why would anyone listen to this out of choice? 3 7. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger I know this. Peep Show! Aha. For that fact only I will give it a good mark. In all seriousness I imagine it's quite a good tune but all I can think of is Peep Show, hence the rating... 8 8. Thought I Knew - Weezer Sorry mate but this stuff just isn't for me. I can't help it, I just don't like this sound. It could be any one of hundreds of bands, it just doesn't stand out in anyway. I'm surprised I don't like it more as I think I had a bit of a thing for Weezer when I was younger. Not anymore. 4 9. Rooster - Alice in Chains Think I used to listen to these as well a bit. Or maybe that was Jesus and Mary Chain. A chain was definitely involved. Anyway, I prefer this to the last song but it's still not really for me. 5 10. The Road I Must Travel - The Nightwatchman See what shen was saying when he said this should be on Finnegan's mix! This is ok, quite cheery and bobs along nicely. The chorus is a bit gay though. Na na naa na na naaa. Hmmmm. 5 11. Can't Find my way home (Acoustic Version) - Blind Faith Quite like this. Pretty chilled out and summery. Like the vocal a lot. This song has soul, something some of the previous tracks lacked massively. Yeah, I'd listen to this again. 7 12. The Day The World Went Away - Nine inch Nails Used to love these years ago. What was that album, something about a black hole wasn't it? Can't remember. I've kind of moved away from this sort of stuff but I can see why people love them, this is ok. 6 13. Portions for Foxes - Rilo Kiley Did you just want a tune with a Leicester reference in the title?! Haha. This is ok. 5 14. Remembering Sunday - All Time Low Teenage angst. That's not patronising mate. I just fucking hate this nonsense. 3 15. Insincerity as an artform - Further Seems Forever This is a good choice for a ending track, kind of feels like the last song if you know what I mean. Again, it's ok but too samey for me. 5 ======== Like shen I was kind of hoping for a bit more variety in this mix and unfortunately for me it wasn't there. More importantly I just don't like the genres that much of this would fit into. Like I said after I reviewed NSSL's mix as long as you enjoy it then that's all that matters. And I really did enjoy that Blind Faith tune (and obviously the Radiohead one). Cheers. Overall 5
