Chelski clinch Community Shield

New Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti saw his side defeat Manchester United 4-1 in a penalty shootout at Wembley this afternoon.

The blues looked like beating United in normal time, with goals from Ricardo Carvalho and Frank Lampard overturning an early goal from Nani.

But a strike from Wayne Rooney in stoppage time levelled the match and forced the spotkick decider, in which Petr Cech saved weak efforts from Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra.

It was quite an entertaining game, with both sides showing plenty to suggest they will once again be title contenders when the Premier season starts next week.

Ultimately, though, the absence of key United defenders tilted the balance in Chelsea's favour.

Keeper Ben Foster had a match to forget in front of watching England coach Fabio Capello. He was at fault for both Chelsea goals.

The presence of defender Nemanja Vidic was also badly missed as Chelsea strikers Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka both looked sharp.

However the United attack, led well by Rooney, were also lively, tormenting the Chelsea defence on a number of occasions in a first half largely dominated by the reds.

United appear to have adapted quickly following the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez in the summer.

But questions remain as to whether they will be able to match the strength in depth shown by today's conquerors.

Never let lefties take penalties.

...because Howard made such a great job of the one he took with his right foot yesterday...

but Fryatt scored plenty last season, so ronnie's point stands again.

But how many lefties miss v's righties.

Aaaahhhhhhhhh?

I'd love to argue in favour of right sided sportsmen here, as I'm right footed. However when playing snooker, I'm left handed, despite being a rightie when writing. :S

wonder why that sort of thing happens, it's not exactly ambidextrosity is it? i mea i can wite with both hands but better with my left, type with both hands but faster when left hand is doing the majority of the typing yet i eat right handed. Wierd.

I still cannot understand why Evra went before Owen and Rooney?

Michael Owen used to take the penelties for Liverpool and England didn't he?

People were saying that the game yesterday was played at Premier League pace, no it wasnt.

Brilliant use of the shoulder by Ballack. lol

Chelsea and United both seem to be lacking something or someone.

Yeah, lets hope Rooney gets injured.

I hate Manchester United as much as anyone but the last thing I want is England's main striker getting injured in World Cup year.
