leicesterfox86 Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Yeah at the moment Defoe over Owen is a certain.Michael Owen: 421 appearences/202 Jermaine Defoe: 341 appearences/122 goals In the goals to games ratio thingy they are pretty equal - Defoe is 80 games and 80 goals behind Owen. Defoe is in better form, so he gets the nod for now. Don't rule out Owen though. This question should be asked again in six months time. Could be interesting.

Just don't come crying on here if he misses with yet another glancing header at the far post and/or bottles his umpteenth one on one to ensure yet another Ingerland WC QF exit next year. Capello, of course, is too aware of Owen's technical limitations (when you see the likes of Lee Hghes cockily rounding a keeper after a run from the centre circle you realise just how low Owen has sunk) and won't cave into Ingermong sentiment by selecting him during the qualifiers. I'd laugh my self sick though if Owen crept onto the plane for South Africa and Capello started him against Italy

Radovan's Caravan Posted 28 August 2009 Author Posted 28 August 2009 Who was the keeper, Kevin Pressman? A loanee from Huddersfiled Town to Bradford called Simon Eastwood. Inexperienced admittedly, but has been capped at U19 level for England. The mantra that a good keeper won't let you round him is as mindless as the dictum that 'you'll never beat so and so from there (wherever THERE is). It's all down to physics and geometry If a striker is stationary and in possession on the edge of the area in a central position and the keeper is upright, five metres away and directly in front of him, then the rounding dynamics favour the keeper. If we call this the '0' option from that point on the dynamics of positioning and movement begin to favour the striker. It is worth remembering that in the games against Valencia, Birmingham and Burnley the one on one dynamics favoured Owen. In each case he chose to shoot early (and miss) rather than change direction and/or feet. Why he does this is a mystery but I presume he has been taught to do this as his natural game is suited to one on ones. No doubt he will be successful in certain instances in this position but by always spurning the rounding option he surrenders the initiative to the keeper as he knows exactly what to expect... ...an early shot.

Owen is playing in a decent team for the first time since Real Madrid and should score plenty. Defoe is looking brilliant at the moment, but can he keep it going throughout a season?
Big Ol' Bob Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 --------------------Rooney------------------- -------Defoe-------------------C.Cole-------
Hugo Sanchez Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 --------------------Rooney--------------------------Defoe-------------------C.Cole------- Come on get real He's not a england striker. He played well for 25 mins against Holland. Doesn't make him world class. Look at his scoring record in the premiership.

Look at his scoring record in the premiership. Agreed. Carlton Cole need's to do alot more at West Ham to prove that he should be a starter for England, he is nowhere near good enough to leading the line. If he has a good season and can score pleanty of goals then yeah fair enough.
StanSP Posted 29 August 2009 Posted 29 August 2009 On current form, it has to be Rooney and Defoe. Heskey would still be on the bench though with Cole/Crouch. Owen needs to keep scoring and if he plays against Arsenal today, it's a great opportunity for him to prove himself against tougher opposition.

lildave3 Posted 29 August 2009 Posted 29 August 2009 You mean the guy who has already played for Scotland?
davieG Posted 29 August 2009 Posted 29 August 2009 Why is Owen not starting for Man U against Arsenal, surely the best striker in England and Fergy fooks it up with a benching
Edmund Posted 29 August 2009 Posted 29 August 2009 You mean the guy who has already played for Scotland?
leicesterfox86 Posted 3 September 2009 Posted 3 September 2009 I really do not rate Crouch. He is a good striker - just look at his scoring record for England. Look at the amount of money that has been spent on him as well.
FilboFox Posted 3 September 2009 Posted 3 September 2009 Come the end of the season, given Owen needs time to adjust to the Man Utd way of playing, we'll see how's he's done and then make a judgement... Defoe blows hot and cold, sometimes he's brilliant, sometimes utter sh*te. And as has been said, it's about goals... let's just leave it till the end of the season before casting off Owen completely.
FilboFox Posted 3 September 2009 Posted 3 September 2009 He is a good striker - just look at his scoring record for England. Look at the amount of money that has been spent on him as well. Crouch? Give it a rest... he's utterly crap apart from at heading! He's gangly, tackles poorly and gives away A LOT of freekicks, can't shoot for toffee and Tottenham paid a ridiculous amount of money for him and are paying him over the odds too! He may have scored well at the clubs he's been at but come on, it's probably cause he scores from corners or crosses as he's like 5 feet taller than everyone else around him!

Well as he's paid to score goals and not for any artistic merit I'd imagine the clubs feel they're getting value for money. Who wants a striker that can beat 5 players, play keepy uppy for 5 minutes, do triple somersaults and then miss the goal. It's a football match not a circus. Sure an element of skill is always welcome but I bet most fans would take goals first. As for scoring from corners etc I seem to recall more of his goals coming from feet and in open play - could be wrong but that's my impression.

Strikers are paid to score and that's what Crouch does regularly enough. Well as he's paid to score goals and not for any artistic merit I'd imagine the clubs feel they're getting value for money. Completely agree, Crouch does the job required and scores the goals. And also agreed about him scoring most of his goals with his feet, it's a bit like Howard for us, you'd think he'd score most goals with his head but the simple reality is that they don't.
FilboFox Posted 3 September 2009 Posted 3 September 2009 117 goals in 355 games and 85 of those goals in 281 league games... is that worth £10m+? And this scoring record he has for England that people harp on about... well, out of the 16 goals he's scored in 34 matches, 3 of them were against Jamaica and 3 against Andorra and another 1 for each game against Macedonia, Estonia, Austria and Trinidad and Tobago... that leaves 6 goals against other bigger teams and even then it's Greece, Uruguay, Hungary, Croatia and Ukraine... He's OK and certainly not someone you'd ignore completely and he has a decent scoring record but to say he's worth paying £10m for and giving him a ludicrously high salary is just not on.

Well Rednapp seems to think otherwise and he's not exactly a serial failure at managing a football club.

But when players in the top clubs are going for £80mill what's £10mill? - whatever you think of him he's an England International and has played at the highest levels it's all relative.
