Fez of Mahrez Posted 24 August 2009 Posted 24 August 2009 That thing about being on a par with Eto'o (nearly the Pichichi and last competitive goal - Champions League final) is quite amusing. A couple of goals in an international friendly and a hat-trick against Hull and suddenly you're one of the best strikers in the world. Yeah, okay.
General Smuts Posted 24 August 2009 Posted 24 August 2009 Michael Owen has been shit since he left Liverpool. Fact.

I am a huge fan of Sam and it is with a degree of reluctance that I concede that on current form Jermain could be considered to be on a par with him (and remember this is coming from someone who has little time for British players). It's interesting that on this thread that nobody else so far has ventured to give their own critique's of the strengths and weaknesses of Owen and Defoe. This shying away from technical discourse is a feature of British football forums (partly I suspect because British fans are technically blind). The closest you'll get to it is an exchange of match stats. The rest of the time it's the prevailing sentiment of the herd. PS Michael Owen received the 'Ballon d'Or' (when it really was a ball of gold rather than the rust pot it is now) - and was thus acknowledged as one of the best strikers in the world - mainly for cacking on the Krauts when they already were a much used public convenience.
Budweiser Posted 24 August 2009 Posted 24 August 2009 Owen. Bound to get more goals this season than Defoe. Rooney and Owen upfront in South Africa.

Well I don't have a valid critique to give having only seen them on football highlights and not live at an actual game, so I'll reserve judgement if that's ok with you perhaps that's why forums are devoid of this type of critique but you carry on believing that I'm technically blind and like to follow the herd.
Radovan's Caravan Posted 24 August 2009 Author Posted 24 August 2009 At the end of the day, who gives a shit? By definition, people who post on forums...
Flynny Posted 24 August 2009 Posted 24 August 2009 By definition, people who post on forums... No-one's mentioning Owen before, especially not to give him the sort of praise you seem to think we all secretly want to lavish on him. You're a shitty little troll.
Fox You Forest Posted 24 August 2009 Posted 24 August 2009 You're a shitty little troll. Now who's giving out lavish praise, I don't rate Voj boy that highly.
AyewJoking Posted 26 August 2009 Posted 26 August 2009 Its simple. Goals count when you're playing up front for England (Heskey aside). De Foes problem was he never really did it for England until recently and hes also bang in form for spurs. I'd place him ahead of Owen in contention for South Africa but still behind Rooney and Heskey. Owen disappoints more often than not but thats not Owen out of form, its Owen as he is today, not the player he once (albeit briefly) was.

Why the hell should Defoe be behind Heskey, what on earth has Heskey done since well...............leaving Leicester. Why should goals count for everyone else except Heskey. If you must take a big man to the world cup, take Crouch, no matter what criticism anyone aims at the bloke, his goalscoring record for the national team is very decent.

lavrentis Posted 26 August 2009 Posted 26 August 2009 Rather have Crouch over Heskey. Good record for England.
dandannieldanok Posted 26 August 2009 Posted 26 August 2009 Heskey dicks all over Crouch. ! Crouch isn't a target man. England don't play hoof ball though so Heskey isn't needed, and Crouch can play the target man role if required. Just think back to the second half of our 3-2 Wembley defeat to Croatia.
Uncle Albert Posted 26 August 2009 Posted 26 August 2009 Why the hell should Defoe be behind Heskey, what on earth has Heskey done since well...............leaving Leicester. Silly statement when he has won more since he left Leicester than Crouch has in his whole career. You must be forgetting Heskey's goal scoring partnership with Michael Owen at Liverpool? And the amount of trophies he won. I would rather have neither Crouch or Heskey in my England team because I don't see the need in either of them, when we could have Rooney playing with Owen, Defoe or Gerrard. If Capello does decide to go with one of them two as a bigger man upfront then he should go for Heskey for one reason.. Pace. For saying how big he is Emile is quick and will get in behind the last defender, Crouch won't. Crouch does have a good goalscoring record but come on let's face it they were against lesser nations, Heskey does well in an England shirt and long may that continue.
lildave3 Posted 26 August 2009 Posted 26 August 2009 Tbf, I think we're all forgetting Carlton Cole here.
Bert Posted 26 August 2009 Posted 26 August 2009 Out of any of our "Target Man" Heskey comes out on top. He has more experience and they key thing what most of the others don't have, is pace.
Edmund Posted 26 August 2009 Posted 26 August 2009 Out of any of our "Target Man" Heskey comes out on top. He has more experience and they key thing what most of the others don't have, is pace. Not forgetting strength. Crouch is like a twig in comparison.
purpleronnie Posted 26 August 2009 Posted 26 August 2009 Although he still probably spends less time on the floor than heskey does.

Hmmm I wouldn't say Heskey was really that good at Liverpool, certainly didn't live upto his price tag and yes to be fair Crouch at Liverpool was similarly disappointing. Liverpool was a step too far for both imo. I agree, I don't think England particularly need either Heskey or Crouch and hopefully Carlton Cole has another good season so if Capello wants a big man, it'll be him. Yes Crouch's goals in the main have come against lesser nations but you can only beat what's in front of you. I realise Heskey provides lots of assists but for me his goalscoring record at national level is simply not good enough, especially considering he's also played against these lesser nations. I'd personally pick Crouch over Heskey for England but like you would rather look elsewhere entirely.
Big Ol' Bob Posted 26 August 2009 Posted 26 August 2009 Carlton Cole and Jermaine Defoe would be my current Englad pairing up front. But no, Wayne Rooney and Heskey will still be up there, well fook you Capello.
