Edmund Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Boss Nigel Pearson has fielded 19 players in the Championship so far this season. No manager has used fewer players.
Thracian Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 I'm sure DJ will be the first to congratulate him!
Guest Bilo Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Probably a good thing really, a stable and solid nucleus of a team can only help to improve results as the players will know each other's game inside out. NP just needs to make sure he doesn't have favourites, or complacency will creep in.
Guest Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Good stuff, bit of consistency is what we like. Makes a change from two seasons ago when we went through god know how many 1st team players in a year.
Fox You Forest Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Makes a change from two seasons ago when we went through god know how many 1st team players in a year. I'm sure someone actually made a thread about it, wasn't it fourty something odd players.
davieG Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Highlights the risk of not having a full reserve competition.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Consistency and Continuity. Two things we have lacked in recent years.
dandannieldanok Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Highlights the risk of not having a full reserve competition. The whole reserves thing is an interesting discussion. On one hand, which you're inferring to, we need reserve competition to keep the fringe squad happy and fit, but on the other hand you would hope that the lack of reserve competition would encourage teams to have less players and keep more continuity. Not really that related to the topic but there you go.
maddog Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Just shows Pearson has his chosen men and certain players will never be given a chance. Not even a 10 minute cameo.
FilboFox Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Just shows Pearson has his chosen men and certain players will never be given a chance. Not even a 10 minute cameo. I doubt that... he'll have chosen his men, yes, and he'll want to stick with them for most matches, but were the chance to arise, I'm sure he'd give some players the chance. Hence why Kermot was given the nod to start against Boro.

Infact i will re phrase that, it just shows our squad isn't really that large and if we pick up injuries to a few key players we are in deep doo doo.
Jimmy Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Infact i will re phrase that, it just shows our squad isn't really that large and if we pick up injuries to a few key players we are in deep doo doo. that can be said about most clubs in this league

Hardly rephrasing... more like completely changing your point!

Thats better yeah?
leftsideoverhere Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 I actually thought that 19 sounded like a lot of players used so far, given that we're less than a quarter of the way into the season. But then I checked back to the Newcastle programme, and they'd used 18 players by the time of that fixture! I remember a few years ago when Leicestershire won the county championship only having used 13 first team players all year, but of course there's no substitutes in cricket. However I do think consistency is a real bonus.
