Jimmy Posted 24 November 2009 Posted 24 November 2009 Spurs currently have 4 keepers on their books, including Ben Alnwick (didn't think he was too bad when he was with us), if Weale went he would be behind Gomes and Cudicini (when he returns) and would be competing with Alnwick who is a few years younger. He is going to be on a good amount of money at Leicester and will probably be offered a better contract than he is on now in the summer, as a reward for his performances. If money is his motiviation or priority or concern then we can pay him more, he has proved he is worth it and that would be preferable to bringing in someone else who is untried and doesn't have a pre season to develop an understanding with his back four. Saying that, I believe there is still loyalty in football and someone like Chris Weale would prefer to play first team football at a club where he is happy than rot in the Spurs reserves, there have been many incidents of players not going from a Championship club to a Prem club and if this proves to be more than just a ficticious tabloid story on a slow news day, then I hope that Chris Weale will be another one. Cudicini is out pretty much for the season and his contract expires this summer, no guarantee he'll get a new 1
Babylon Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 Yes which I think is the most important factor to him. Do you know him personally and he has confided in you that nothing but first team football will do? Comments in the press mean nothing 99.9% of the time, it's always the same old clap trap spouted. He has played 21 games in 3 years!! He was out for a long time with an injury, a serious one at that. Do you not think that might make him sit down and think "this could be my final pay day, another serious injury and I might not play again? or "this might be my only chance to play in the premier"? He has stated all he wants to do is play! So have a 100 other players, but they all jumped ship for the premier league in a heart beat.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 There's no point in discussing this in any great length (as many of you are doing) as he is only on a shortlist, so clearly isn't Harry's first choice to fill the goalkeeping hole he has and so a bid may not be forthcoming. Now I'm going to contradict myself by discussing this at length, but bare with me... People are branding figures of about 20k a week, but I would be suprised if Spurs would be willing to pay that for a 2nd choice keeper, who is pretty un-tested at the level's they are playing at. Yes he may get a pay raise and a signing on fee but I don't think it would be mind changing amounts. Weale seems pretty intelligent, and will no doubt understand that if Spurs are to come in for him 1.) He wasn't there first choice, far from it 2.) He won't be going as first choice 3.) Unless he get's some breaks early on, he could end up playing second fiddle and effectively stagnate his career. 4.) If Spurs rate him that highly, there will always be other chances in Premiership teams as there are a few goalkeeping positions that could come up for grabs; Manchester Utd, Portsmouth (assuming James leaves and they have money) Aston Villa (Freidal hasn't looked as impressive this season, although there is a good back up in Guzan), Everton (Howard seems to be regaining his Utd form!) Sunderland (Gordan's out for a while?) West Ham (Assuming someone will eventually move for Rob Green) I'm not saying Chris would be a dead cert for any of these positions, but give him a good season this, and a decent start to a premiership season with us next and his stock will have sored a lot more - grab the money now or bide time and potentially grab even more? Oh and if I were Spurs I would get Rob Green in - West Ham will accept eventually, and they could combine with a deal for Upson.
Edmund Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 Do you know him personally and he has confided in you that nothing but first team football will do? Well do you know him personally and he has confided in you that a move to Tottenham if on the cards will be his wish? He was out for a long time with an injury, a serious one at that. Do you not think that might make him sit down and think "this could be my final pay day, another serious injury and I might not play again? or "this might be my only chance to play in the premier"? Well it works both ways. He could also think the opposite like I've written before and might not want to take the risk again. So have a 100 other players, but they all jumped ship for the premier league in a heart beat. Okay the majority have but doesn't mean he will. Once again like i've said before not every player is motivated by money. At the end of the day babs we are both looking at each side of the coin and none of us know if we are right or wrong. Lets just leave it there because were just going round in circles.
Jimmy Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 Jehst you sound like Swansea fans just before Martinez left for Wigan
Edmund Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 Jehst you sound like Swansea fans just before Martinez left for Wigan I would like to think more like Kaka before he rejected double the wages at Man City for Real madrid.
