davieG Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 "It's no secret that David James and Ben Foster top Spurs manager Harry Redknapp's Christmas wish-list as a replacement for Carlo Cudicini following the Italian's motorcycle accident. But City's Chris Weale has also emerged as a target. Portsmouth and Manchester United are playing Scrooge, and City would be wise to do the same. After only nine starts in three years at Bristol City, Weale has been a revelation for City." Merc Leicester City goalkeeper Chris Weale could be a target for Tottenham. The Londoners are drawing up a short-list of goalkeepers to act as cover for regular number one Heurelho Gomes following Carlo Cudicini's motorcycle accident last week, and Weale is on it. Cudicini fractured both wrists and injured his pelvis when his BMW superbike collided with a Ford Fiesta in Walthamstow last Thursday. He will be out of the game for some time but is expected to make a full recovery. Spurs now need to recruit another goalkeeper and a source close to the north London club has said Weale is on their radar. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp remains unconvinced about Gomes and is keen to bring Portsmouth's David James or Manchester United's disillusioned keeper Ben Foster to White Hart Lane, but their clubs are reluctant to do business. Therefore, Redknapp will try to recruit a low-budget alternative as a number two and Weale's form this season has drawn admiring glances. However, Redknapp may find City equally as stubborn as Portsmouth and United, and Weale himself could take some convincing to swap a regular starting spot in the City line-up for a place on the bench at Spurs. Weale has waited for the past three years to get a regular run of first-team games and is revelling in the responsibility handed to him by City manager Nigel Pearson. After playing 162 times during seven years for Yeovil Town, Weale made just nine appearances for Bristol City after joining them in 2006 until he joined City last summer. He had a frustrating time with injuries and had to be content with loan spells at Yeovil and Hereford United before Pearson snapped him up on a free transfer. Weale's form has been impressive and he was short-listed for the Championship Player of the Month for October. He lost out to Peter Whittingham after his seven goals in four games for Cardiff City. With his career on an upward spiral, Redknapp will have his work cut out to convince the 27-year-old to accept a supporting role at Spurs, despite the lure of the Premier League. Weale has a contract with City until the end of June, 2011 and has publicly stated how happy he is at the club. Merc
Head Honcho Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 Which begs the questions! How much is he worth? How much should we let him go for? He'll be on big bucks if he gets the gig but it'll also mean him going back to his old job of keeping the bench warm.
RowlattsFox Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 I'll be really disappointed if he was to leave, not just because he's a very good keeper and would be difficult to replace him. He's spent most of his career so far as a number 2, and we've given him his chance as number 1. I'm fairly confident he won't go and this is nothing more than speculation anyway.

Good enough to keep Weale out of the Bristol City team and only recently handed in a transfer request. Hia age may be the only negative.
Nick Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 , who has said he is a target? The Mercury, 'newspaper friend' of the football club? The only news I read is that Spurs need a new keeper. When Spurs or Harry say something...... that's all good, otherwise this is lazy journalism, isn't it?
Ric Flair Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 I wouldn't rule out Weale being in the England Squad if we get promoted this season. I'm pencilling in a trip to SA just incase. A'iiiight.
The Doctor Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 He won't leave. he said when he signed he was looking to be first choice so he won't walk out to warm the bench, if spurs can promise him first team football then we'll have a problem.
StanSP Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 Looking for regular first-team football - getting that here at City. Back to sitting on the bench as backup like at Bristol is what he'll get at Spurs. Going nowhere.
Guest Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 I wonder what Fox92's opinion on the matter is?

Football talk of transfers to this, or that club are, rife throughout each season.....and there is no solid basis for this particular story. Just press gossip.

Isn't that the case with 99% of all transfer talk and always has been, unless a club chooses to go public. Of course we could just ignore it all
Babylon Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 25k a week instead of 8k a week will make players change their mind about first team football... lets not kid ourselves about that.
Corky Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 If a bigger club came in then he might be tempted, but it's only Spurs so don't panic
Chrysalis Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 the press really see us as a stepping stone club dont they. whenever we doing well in the league suddenly our players are linked with leaving.

Father Ted Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 Furthermore backs up his claims to play for England. I really don't see what Ben Foster has to offer ahead of Weale apart from the fact that he plays for Man U!! And I'm serious!!

And I'm serious!! ... I hope Weale doesn't go to the big name 'just for the money' club (but you really couldn't blame him). It'll be a shame thats all, especially as he's gaining a good reputation and standing with City ... hell, we're Championship this year but who knows where we could be next and I agree with all the comments about regular 'first team' starts.
Edmund Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 I Weally hope that's not the case. Can't see him moving to bench warm after such a long period without any regular action, especially as he has only just moved here and is already a fans favourite. He's a solid and competent keeper and it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that he's already being linked with clubs in the prem. Comes across as a very professional sportsmen and I genuinely think he would rather play week in week out than be second best on a higher wage.
Bert Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 There's not much going on this week, and they need something to fill their football section. Weale's only just starting to prove himself at Championship level, and has established himself as the #1 here, whereas at Spurs he'll be 2nd fiddle. Spurs are aiming for a top 6 finish this season, and when I say this, it's no disrespect to Chris Weale, because he's a fantastic 'keeper and has been a revelation for us this season, but Spurs will have their eye on someone who has big game, Premiership and/or European experience. In a few years I believe Weale could be a top Premiership 'keeper, but right now I think he's happy where he is and I'd be very shocked if he left.
General Smuts Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. My yid mates will love this!
lcfc_jme Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 The Chris Weale Show will be in town for a couple more years yet.
davieG Posted 23 November 2009 Author Posted 23 November 2009 Leicester City are already planning to sell Chris Weale to Tottenham. The News of the World says Weale is wanted by Spurs to replace crocked keeper Carlo Cudicini. Cudicini suffered wrist and pelvis injuries in a motorcycle accident and is out for the season. Weale, 27, is in great form for the Foxes and confident of stepping up to Premier League level. Leicester boss Nigel Pearson has already targeted second-choice Wolves keeper Marcus Hahnemann to fill Weale's boots. http://www.tribalfootball.com/leicester-pr...et-weale-462841
