davieG Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 From the BBC Women-only shortlists for seats The Labour Party has decided two constituencies in the East Midlands will be fought in the next general election from women-only shortlists. Only female candidates will be allowed to stand for the party in the Sherwood and Leicester West constituencies. The current MP sitting at the Sherwood seat, Paddy Tipping, is standing down from parliament. Leicester West is currently held by former health secretary Patricia Hewitt. Prospective Labour candidate Christine Shawcroft, who is hoping to stand in Sherwood, said: "The Labour Party decided to have a 40% target of women in parliament so as seats come up they have to have all women shortlists to hit that target. "It's important to represent the whole of the population of the country properly, making sure women as well as men are represented." Out of 44 MPs in the East Midlands just seven are women, these are all Labour MPs.

Tabou Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 Any kind of positive or negative descrimination is wrong!!! God Forbid the Labour Party actually appoint the person who is best for the job. Bullshit policies and 'targets' like these are why this country is in such a sodding state.
Uncle Phil Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 God Forbid the Labour Party actually appoint the person who is best for the job. Bullshit policies and 'targets' like these are why this country is in such a sodding state. That's far too straight forward and makes too much sense obviously.
Jon the Hat Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 As long as I never have to hear Patricia Hewitt again she could be replaced by a giraffe for all I care.

Bullshit policies and 'targets' like these are why this country is in such a sodding state. Never going to happen. For a start, the best person for the job would not be a member of the Labour party.
Fosse Boy Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 Any kind of positive or negative descrimination is wrong!!! This.
ACF Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 Stupid idea. You'd get the person most suited to the job, and you wouldn't want to cut down your chances of finding that person. Stooopid.
Jimothy Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 Agree with everyone else, any kind of discrimination is wrong, positive or negative. Who ever is the best should get the job. This is just the start though. It'll be black women, muslims, homosexuals etc any group that is seemingly lacking in parliment will be put forward as candidates ahead of potentially better MPs.
Guest Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 As a woman () I would like to think I get wherever I get on merit, having competed against the best and emerging victorious due to my own brilliance.

Bullshit policies and 'targets' like these are why this country is in such a sodding state. As a woman () I would like to think I get wherever I get on merit, having competed against the best and emerging victorious due to my own brilliance. Agree with all of these. I don't see how discrimination can ever be 'positive' because in order for it to work, somebody has to be disriminated against in a negative fashion. In this particular case any man; however suitable for the job he may be, would lose out purely for the crime of possessing a penis. I believe in meritocracy, where each and every person has an equal chance of success regardless of their sex, race etc based on their own qualities. This policy isn't an example of that. Thank Christ we'll be rid of this shower soon.
Daggers Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 Who would I most like to spend all of my working days with? Well-qualified, hard-working, high-achieving individuals or fit birds with big tits? Tough choice. Glad I'm not in HR - those poor bastards face decisions like this on a daily basis.
