tartanowl Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Sheffield Wednesday Football Club can confirm that Brian Laws has left the club by mutual consent. The club would like to place on record our wholehearted thanks to Brian for his dedication, commitment and tireless effort in managing first team affairs over the past three years. Assistant manager, Russ Wilcox, and development coach, John Dungworth, will also leave their positions and we thank Russ and John for their considerable contribution to Sheffield Wednesday alongside Brian. Sheffield Wednesday chairman, Lee Strafford, said: "Brian Laws has done a very good job as manager of Sheffield Wednesday, particularly in light of the low level of resources at his disposal in the first two years of his time with the club. "However, we believe that change at this point can deliver fresh energy and direction into first team affairs in order to arrest our recent run of results and help push the club up the Championship table. "A very positive legacy has been left by Brian in terms of the quality of the playing squad we now have at Sheffield Wednesday and we will now focus our attentions on securing the right manager to help these players push up the league in the short term and make us competitive for a return to the Premier League in the long term. "Brian has put in an immense amount of work as manager at this club and he should be remembered for some genuine achievements on the pitch and for stabilising Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship. On behalf of the club I must thank him for his unwavering dedication in his role as manager and we wish him the very best of luck for the future." The club would also like to assure our supporters that Brian Laws' departure at this point does not disrupt the investment process and that progress continues on this front. In the mean time, academy manager, Sean McAuley, will be appointed as caretaker manager, with responsibility for first team affairs as Sheffield Wednesday start the recruitment process for a new permanent manager. "We are very fortunate to have someone of Sean's capabilities within our club to drive change and ensure that SWFC's best interests are served. We will not rush into the next permanent appointment as this will be a key appointment in terms of determining the long term future of our club," Strafford added.
Ultra Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 No great surprise. The performance yesterday suggested he'd lost the dressing-room some time ago. Don't even consider a bid for Pearson!
Edmund Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 It's amazing how ones fortunes can change so quickly in the world of football. I remember not so long ago Laws was dubbed as one of the best managers in this league. A run of defeats and it's all over. Always thought he was a good manager though. Probably for the best that they install someone new as they seem to be stuck in a rut. Sorry Tartan but glad the decision was made after our game as a team with a new manager always seems to have a good first result.
Darkzzz_ Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Hope Wednesday can bounce back, I like the owls.
Guest Mee-9 Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 How i love the feeling you get when your team gets a manager sacked.

Guest Mee-9 Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Bit odd. Yeah it's a bit odd, but i like the idea that because we beat sheff wed, we condemned the guy to be sacked Suppose the chants of "You're getting sacked in the morning" were correct.
Kilworthfox Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Never nice to see this but after yesterday's "performance" it was obvious that it was not working for him. Best of luck to both parties for the future, unless vs LCFC
Darkzzz_ Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Yeah it was hardly us alone that made this decision up. We just laid a boot in when he was staggering.
AoWW Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 The right decision - especially following yesterday's performance. I hope the Owls can get a new manager in quickly to re-invigorate the team and turn things around. Their support is first-class and they deserve better than they've had of late.
Guest Bilo Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Certainly not a surprise, yesterday was the first time in ages I fully expected the chants of 'getting sacked in the morning' to be vindicated. As others have said, it was clear that the Wednesday players had lost all confidence in themselves and their manager so his departure had to be imminent. First thing's first; Pearson won't be going to Hillsborough. He had arguably the best years of his playing career there but he's having the best years of his managerial career here, and there's no room for sentiment in football. We're a more ambitious club than Wednesday, better placed to progress in the table and Pearson no doubt views us as a work in progress rather than a job done. I honestly think he'd only leave for either a club already in the Premier League or at least one with realistic Premiership aspirations. The good news for Wednesday is that there are some decent managers out there without pesky compensation packages to tempt them to leave their clubs. Darren Ferguson will undoubtedly be bookies' favourite and rightly so. He took a much smaller club than Wednesday to the Championship from League Two in successive seasons without having to spend wildly and playing some decent football along the way. Only the arrogance and delusion of the Posh board got him the sack from that post and it could well be a decision that comes back to bite them on the bum if he takes the Wednesday post and gets them out of trouble. Southgate could well consider the post an opportunity to rebuild his reputation after an awful start with Boro and would do good things there. So not all is lost for them, far from it. The fans deserve better than they saw yesterday and I hope for their sake that Laws' replacement can offer them that. Best of luck for the rest of the season. (Apart from the return fixture of course )
Matt Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Is that 3 managers that have been sacked after playing us now? We beat Barnsley their manager went, Beat Sheff Wednesday - Laws has gone, and i'm not sure on this one but did Toby Jug aka Paul Sturrock get the push after we beat Plymouth 1-0?
