Ironic how we score 5 the second God boy is out of the team.

One thing I will say after seeing the highlights is credit to Wellens and King. They played two spectacular balls to help set up Waghorn's and Gally's third. Defence splitting passes that the likes of Carrick and Scholes would have been proud of.

We were excellent yesterday, really positive from the start (even though we should've been behind inside two minutes) and took our chances.

Gallagher was inventive and took his second and third goals superbly, Waghorn was a constant threat (liked his getting between ball and defender, that gave them real problems) and the midfield were dominant. The defence coped well and Weale made a couple of vital saves.

All-in-all a very good performance and result, ahead of three aways. Will help the goal difference too.

That may be going a bit far, but it has often been pointed out, by myself and others, that Matty is a certain type of player, he does not get that involved in the buildup and in the box he rarely passes, even if a team mate is better placed.

Having said all that, he does score goals. he is our best goal 'poacher' since Tony Cottee.

Fratt is a very clearly defined player, so you know what you are going to get with him, it is simply a choice for the manager (and the team) whether you play him because he will get you goals or leave him out in the hope that better team play upfront will do the job for you.

I think it is fair to say that we know where Pearson stands on this issue.

It is also worth bearing in mind that, well as Gallagher played, his goals came from distance and he failed to make the most of several opportunities from close in, on another day.... :dunno: ?

His header wasn't from distance but it did show all the presence of mind that was missing when he got his big chance one-v-one against the keeper on Tuesday.

Gallagher's becoming a proper cog in our team and being properly involved has improved his match fitness, sharpness and stamina so that he's becoming more involved in more places and with greater accuracy in the main.

He seemed to like the freedom he was given yesterday and mostly used it well although some of his crossing was disappointing.

Despite his hat-trick I still see him as a man to score goals in clutches when he's confident rather than on a regular basis. Whether he can become meaner, more ruthless and more willing to get into places where it hurts in his quest for goals I don't know.

The ability is probably there but whether there's enough of the scrapper in him we'll see. Because, so often, it is being there in the right place to scuff a goal or two that makes the difference betweeen a skilled footballer and a feared goalscorer. On Tuesday, his first instinct should have been to hit the target - something Waghorn might be wise to learn as well. Gallagher did exactly that yesterday and what a difference it made.

The header was from 13-14 yds, not exactly a tap in. The point that I was making is that he likes to strike from the edge of the box where he can find time and space, snatching chances from the hurley burley around the 6 yd box does not seem to be his game.

For this reason I definitely do not see him as an out and out striker, playing a free role from the wide right position worked well enough yesterday but I remain unconvinced overall. I still think his best position will be as part of a 3 man central midfield but I think it will be a while before we are comfortable enough with the 4-3-3 setup to make it happen.

Fellow Blue Army

Being stuck here in the USA - I frequently check the pre-season 442 to check up on the opponents before our game. Interestingly the S****horpe fan was quoted as saying "Team most wanted to beat - Leicester - we have gone down and up with them and their fans have attitude" - Well mate F** You !!! how do you like them eggs ? 5-1

:crylaugh:

Let's not get carried away. I always said Gallacher was a good buy.

Matty is injured, but when he returns, let's see them together up front. I think it will work well.

There's no point in thinking about Fryatt now as he's out for 2 months.

We need to focus on who we've got available and Gallagher up front is quality and I think with Waghorn playing alongside him, it'll be a great partnership that could be fruitful at this level... as was shown, we CAN play good football and those two CAN create and score.
