However, I have a 'generic' MP3 player with a Mini b USB socket. I have tried googling but all I find are things that enable you to plug an iPod into a mini usb..... I don't really want to buy an iPod cos my gf got me my current MP3 player...

If you can afford a flat with a built in ipod docking station with ceiling mounted surround sound, then buy a f**king ipod!
