Sparky Posted 21 March 2010 Posted 21 March 2010 I went for the Oasis/Kasabian gig and for England Vs Belarus and it simply lacks the magic of the old Wembley. I wonder if its the fact that their isnt any history connected with the new wembley yet. I think not having the long walk out the tunnel from behind the goal is a mistake. The walk to where the handshakes take place now lasts 5 seconds compared to a good minute or so at the old ground.
purpleronnie Posted 21 March 2010 Posted 21 March 2010 It's difficult to describe. It's more visually impressive than anything else. The arch is a cracking feature, and inside it's very swish. I prefer it to Old Trafford because you get a good view from anywhere and the Stade de France because, well, it's not French. I'll agree the atmosphere isn't great, although I've not ever been when I've had a vested interest in who's playing, so it's not been a concern for me. And it's interesting you should say that you were bored by it. I was the first time, but it's grown on me. And on the 'wow' factor, I challenge anybody to walk down Wembley way, look up at that stadium and not be very impressed. I pass it pretty regularly and it's undeniably impressive. It's the 21st century, we're past staging prestige football fixtures in a run-down stadium. I dunno maybe its just me but I wasn't impressed at all, The arch was cool but the stadium itself just was boring. When I went to Quest field or the Kyle field in texas or even PNC Park with the amazing city skyline in the background made more of an impression on me. Just to show you what I mean:- Quest Field:- Kyle field:- PNC Park:- Maybe people would find the above stadiums boring, but the all had the wow factor, for me anyway.
Ozwin Posted 21 March 2010 Posted 21 March 2010 Being on the edge of that second stadium's stand would shit me right up.
CosbehFox Posted 21 March 2010 Posted 21 March 2010 The rows of empty corporate seating always has me exclaiming 'wow!' I think most modern day football folks and kids growing up wouldn't give a flyer. The likes of Shrewsbury and Gillingham were hardly worried about empty seats. I went for the Oasis/Kasabian gig and for England Vs Belarus and it simply lacks the magic of the old Wembley. I wonder if its the fact that their isnt any history connected with the new wembley yet. I think not having the long walk out the tunnel from behind the goal is a mistake. The walk to where the handshakes take place now lasts 5 seconds compared to a good minute or so at the old ground. Pretty much spot on.....agreed on the tunnel. Magic that, every player got to soak it up with the walk. I said to a workmate, one of the reason I think cup finals are so boring now is that players are used to much more big pitches. Wembley is a reasonable size whilst back in the day most players in the playoff finals had played on Filbo, Boundary Park, Kenilworth Road and the ilk...all tight little pitches during the season and then played on this giant pitch...lack of fitness, more space = more goals.
ozleicester Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 I long for the days when we stood on the pitch to support, none of this standing on terraces or sitting in seats! In those days, if the Centre Forward wasnt playing as he should, you just gave him a clip round the ear as he ran past, they soon knew what was expected. In those days the food and drink consisted of boiling up the occasional rat as it ran past. Getting to the game required a 4 day excursion beginning with a ride in the back of the farm cart and finishing with an 18 mile walk to the game. When the corporate of the day visited we had to each go down on bended knee to ensure the local lord didnt have to gaze upon our unkempt personages. meh... Old Wembley, a fantastic stadium with history and a million memories evolution... New Wembley an impressive structure that will build its own memories. Im tired of the all of "things were better in my day" If you want to stand up.. go see your local conference team, lets be honest, the quality of the game is often as good as it was back in the day. The grounds are "real", the Corporates dont exist, the fans are real and sing. The club is about the local area, the players care about the club. All the glory hunters wanting a trip to Wembley, just go to the local club and enjoy the atmosphere.
