Jordan Posted 24 April 2010 Author Posted 24 April 2010 OOhh its like millwall v west ham . I'm sure I'll bump into plenty of losers that jerk off to Green Street at the game. We're away to DC united...not expecting much. ...from DC? They're horrible this year. Oh, what a shame...
purpleronnie Posted 24 April 2010 Posted 24 April 2010 I'm sure I'll bump into plenty of losers that jerk off to Green Street at the game. ...from DC? They're horrible this year. Oh, what a shame... I haven't been impressed with us this season, wouldn't be surprised if they beat us.
Jordan Posted 25 April 2010 Author Posted 25 April 2010 So, I made my delayed Red Bull Arena debut yesterday. Excellent day out--the only bad thing about it was that there were 10,000 empty seats! (stadium capacity=25,000) Come on, people! New manager Hans Backe (from Sweden) and GM Erik Soler (from Norway) seem to have done a great job adjusting to the different style of play and unique player restrictions of MLS--they've certainly adjusted quicker than our Austrian overlords. Everything sucked about our team last year but this season, we're noticeably much more improved in nearly every area. A lot of this has to do with the team collecting an assortment of players from the most ridiculous and random places and teams (which has been lampooned in a trivia game by the excellent website MetroFanatic). Estonian Joel Lindpere--scorer of both the first goal and the first league goal at Red Bull Arena--and Welsh journeyman Carl Robinson play a tidy game in the midfield. I guess the Norwegian Soler knew of Lindpere from Tromsø, and they got Robinson from Toronto for a fourth-round draft pick in what could be one of the most clever trades of the season. They've also done an excellent job spotting weaknesses in the team and addressing them with player acquisitions. The preseason friendlies shoes that our left side was a liability, so they went out and signed Costa Rican left back Roy Miller from Rosenborg just before the season started. They've also added Danish left winger Brian Nielsen on loan from Vejle in Denmark and he did pretty well yesterday considering he just arrived in the USA on Thursday. They've had a tough time finding a good striker to partner with Juan Pablo Angel, and losing Mac Kandji for a few months to a broken foot is a setback. They just signed Ghanaian striker Salou Ibrahim (also from Vejle ... seriously, don't ask me how the hell they find these guys) this season after he was on trial... now, I was very surprised they did sign him, because from what I saw of Ibrahim, he looked horrible. But I supposed Soler and Backe feel that in MLS, which can often be a slow and physical game, forwards don't always have to be technically élite or quick as lightning (and several big and physical yet below-average-skilled forwards have had success in MLS both historically and currently). And whaddyaknow? Salou scored yesterday. About that "draft pick" I mentioned earlier: in MLS (as in MLB, the NBA, the NFL and the NHL), before every season there is the player Draft, where teams select young players (usually high school or college players), with the orders of the picks more or less determined by the teams' respective finishes in the regular season and playoffs (the worst teams get the better draft picks, esp. in the early rounds). Sure, it helped that last year's terrible season helped get us good draft picks, but even still our front office did an awesome job (especially considering that our manager and GM have probably never done anything remotely similar to a player draft in their lives). First round picks Tony Tchani and Austin de la Luz (both midfielders) aren't ready to start right away and are more long-term projects but easily talented enough to be worth their picks. In the second round, though, they picked Tim Ream, a 22-year-old defender that's jumped right into the starting lineup and has played sensationally in the first five games. We might have ourselves a US national team defender here in the near future. What a pick. And oh, yeah, the new stadium is awesome.
purpleronnie Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 Not sure whay I said we had DC? Must have been still hung over. I was correct about not expecting much though. Kansas next week.
placidcasual Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Got bloody soaked for 90 minutes. Ugh. Still 1-0 win. Have you seen Kamaras miss for Kansas? Miss of the century.
Jordan Posted 28 April 2010 Author Posted 28 April 2010 Got bloody soaked for 90 minutes. Ugh. Still 1-0 win. Have you seen Kamaras miss for Kansas? Miss of the century. I didn't see it until this afternoon--the pizza guy across the street is Brazilian and a big soccer fan and the first thing he asked me today was if I'd seen it. As soon as I finished, I went home and watched it... amazing. Simply amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY93jfd7H0M Open Cup first round tonight... RBNY vs Philly part deux. not only did I not feel like schlepping back and forth to the game in Harrison and spending $, but I'm too lazy to watch the stream online (watching Yankees vs. Orioles on TV instead. it's a big game--if you lose to the Orioles this season, you get kicked out of the Majors ). 1-0 to the Metro Boys early on, Conor Chinn with his first goal.
Shrenchel Posted 28 April 2010 Posted 28 April 2010 Genius. Crowd sounds more like a Boyzone concert than a football match as well, fvking jarring.
MC Prussian Posted 28 April 2010 Posted 28 April 2010 Genius. Crowd sounds more like a Boyzone concert than a football match as well, fvking jarring. I can only hear teenage girls screaming in the background. Indeed, an atmosphere just like at a boygroup concert. Which proves that soccer is a sport for girls, as my Canadian and American fellas would say. As opposed to football.
Jordan Posted 28 April 2010 Author Posted 28 April 2010 I'd hate to be a Kansas City Wizards fan right now--they've been playing in a minor-league baseball stadium while waiting for their new ground to be built. Fortunately, they won't have to deal with this for much longer, as their new park should open in the middle of next season--whether that will do anything about the shrieking crowd remains to be seen. Correction on my earlier post--it wasn't the first round proper, but first qualifying round for the MLS teams that did poorly last season + expansion Philadelphia. Red Bulls held on for a 2-1 win, and now host New England in another qualifying game on May 12 for the right to play in the U.S. Open Cup first round later. Might make that my Leicester City playoff win afterparty.
Tony Pine Posted 28 April 2010 Posted 28 April 2010 just watched that miss on youtube...frickin hilarious dude
purpleronnie Posted 28 April 2010 Posted 28 April 2010 That miss is everywhere at the moment, funny stuff.
AmericanScott Posted 2 May 2010 Posted 2 May 2010 Another win for New York and 7 points clear at the top. Please refer to my signature for the league's best GK. COUNDOUL!
Jordan Posted 2 May 2010 Author Posted 2 May 2010 I'm absolutely thrilled with NY's start. It's taken them six games to win as many games as they won all of last season! Going to DC and beating the Scum 2-0--and keeping them in the basement without a point --makes the start even sweeter. I might disagree with your comments on Bouna Time, though--he still makes me quite anxious when he goes out for crosses, can be much too nonchalant when fetching other balls (see own goal vs. Chivas) and he can't even take a fvcking goal kick! But he's a damn good shot stopper.
purpleronnie Posted 2 May 2010 Posted 2 May 2010 We were so much better against Kansas, but they had 10 men for most of it so its hard to say really. Still a wins a win.
Jordan Posted 16 May 2010 Author Posted 16 May 2010 Well, the Red Bulls have come back down to Earth. It's clear the team has no depth up front. Excuse me for a moment; I'm gonna get Thierry Henry's agent on the phone...
Narborough_fox Posted 16 May 2010 Posted 16 May 2010 Seattle Sounders purely as i have a top which my dad bought for me will probably watch some while I'm over in the US in August, if it's still on!
purpleronnie Posted 16 May 2010 Posted 16 May 2010 Seattle Sounders purely as i have a top which my dad bought for me will probably watch some while I'm over in the US in August, if it's still on! Yep it runs to the end of october. Houston lost...again, LA walking away with it. DC next.
Alexikokopops Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 Seattle Sounders refund their 32000 season ticket holders after 4-0 loss to LA Galaxy. 32000 season ticket holders??? Good work
Jordan Posted 19 May 2010 Author Posted 19 May 2010 Seattle Sounders refund their 32000 season ticket holders after 4-0 loss to LA Galaxy. 32000 season ticket holders??? Good work I might be mistaken, but not all of them are full-season-ticket holders--I think everybody who has a half-season plan or other multi-game ticket package are included in that 32,000 sum. Anyway, yes, though--it is good work. That's the kind of good work that happens when teams -Play in a nice stadium in an easily-accessible, safe, downtown urban area -Make their presence known to the city with a bombardment of non-cheesy, non-patronizing advertisement campaign -Actually make their fans a "part of the team" (can vote every few seasons on whether to keep or fire people in front office positions) -Are happy to have young adults be a large part of their respective fanbases -Have an ownership group that makes themselves visible to the public and accessible to the media... or, in other words, give their season-ticket holders things (material or otherwise) that resonate in their hearts instead of a constant stream of bullshit PR. All this in spite of their marching band and their third jerseys this season. A lot of MLS franchise execs ought to have been breaking their BlackBerry keypads from taking millions of notes on how Seattle have marketed their team over the past two years. What kind of crowds will the Galaxy get when Donovan and Beckham are gone? Whither the Red Bulls without a marquee name playing forward if the crowd at the last few league games at the new place haven't been all that great (especially if a New York City expansion team pops up this decade)? You'd better get to work, marketing firms...
purpleronnie Posted 26 May 2010 Posted 26 May 2010 Looks like T.Henry will be playing in the MLS after the world cup, great for NY great for the MLS, I'll look forward to seeing him play against us.
purpleronnie Posted 27 July 2010 Posted 27 July 2010 Going to see Man utd tomorrow, I'm strangely excited.
dandannieldanok Posted 27 July 2010 Posted 27 July 2010 MLS Allstars never lost I don't think Correct, won every game apart from drawing with Everton last year (which they did actually lose on penalties).
purpleronnie Posted 27 July 2010 Posted 27 July 2010 I'm expecting lots of people with funny accents wearing Man Utd shirts. Pretty much like any Man utd home game.
