Jordan Posted 20 March 2010 Posted 20 March 2010 It's back... probably. Big things in 2010. First of, we've got a new team, Philadelphia Union. As a born-and-bred New Yorker, I've got a natural instinct to dislike anything in sports related to Philadelphia, so I hate this team even though there's absolutely no history between them and the NY Red Bulls. Second, the Red Bulls have built their new arena and will play in it for the first time this evening in a friendly against Santos from Brazil (no Robinho tonight, though). BEST. STADIUM. IN. THE. LEAGUE. Oh, but I'm not going to the game. I've decided that I will not spend money on MLS tickets until the league and its players union agree on a fair labor deal. Negotiations for a new deal have been contentious, and the union has drawn its line in the sand and threatened to strike if no deal was reached by Monday. However, reports this morning indicate that there has been a lot of progress made in quite a short timespan and that a new 5-year agreement is imminent. anyway, as the workingmen threaten strike, it's only fitting for me to ask, "Which side are you on, boys? Which side are you on?" (as in teams you'll be supporting this year) Philadelphia vs. Seattle Sounders on Thursday, Colorado Rapids vs. Chivas USA on Friday, then the rest of the league plays next Saturday.
purpleronnie Posted 20 March 2010 Posted 20 March 2010 I can't wait I'm going to miss Houston's first game, but I have bought my season ticket.
Edmund Posted 20 March 2010 Posted 20 March 2010 I've never followed the MLS but I've got a soft spot for the New York Metrostars from my visit to the big apple. Still got a t-shirt lurking around somewhere. I remember watching a match on tv and to settle the draw they had some weird penalty shoot out in which the player started in the half way line and dribbled it to the goal. I was told it was because the Americans didn't understand the concept of a draw and only a win or lose was acceptable. I must admit that put me off the American game. I was also shocked to see that they sold out and were renamed after a drink.

Jordan Posted 20 March 2010 Author Posted 20 March 2010 Oh good, I'm guessing they got the idea from Ice Hockey? ...which, in almost all professional leagues, uses shoot-outs and no longer has games finish tied. Anyway, MLS and the players union have struck a new 5-year labor agreement, so thankfully the season will start off as planned. I'm not sure about the specifics of the agreement, but I'll check that when I'm home and not out in this sensational weather.
MC Prussian Posted 20 March 2010 Posted 20 March 2010 I'm not going to endorse the MLS until 2011, when the Whitecaps and Timbers will join the merry league. As a lad who has been to a few games in Vancouver and with a fellow Foxes fan from Portland, it's not going to be complete until then. Northwest Coast Power!! P.S.: Good luck to the team of the City of Freedom.
purpleronnie Posted 20 March 2010 Posted 20 March 2010 Can't wait for Portland to Join, fans are fab!
Bridge Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 Can't wait for Portland to Join, fans are fab! We took 500 to Shittle for the pre-season match a couple weeks ago..put up with gestapo security, piped in crowd noise, Bud light swilling Shittle customers with very poor manners.(helped that we prevailed 1-0) Next year should be very interesting. There will be many Portland Timber fans who will be Philly fans for one night this Thursday, praying for a dismal start to the Flounders 2010 season!
AmericanScott Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 Just watched the highlights of NY v Santos. Looks like a nice ground and perfect capacity for NY. I always imagined East Rutherford to be impossible to get an atmosphere going because of the fact there was only around 10,000 fans in a 80,000 seater stadium! Shame it wasn't opened last summer as i would've gone when i was back in the homeland. As Jordan said, anything that comes out of Philly is automatically number 1 enemy for a New Yorker. Only good things from Philly are Cheesesteaks and that film Trading Places.

purpleronnie Posted 28 March 2010 Posted 28 March 2010 Seattle Sounders FC 2 - Philadelphia Union 0 Chivas USA 0 - Colorado Rapids 1 Columbus Crew 2 - Toronto FC 0 FC Dallas 1 - Houston Dynamo 1 Red Bull New York 1 - Chicago Fire 0 Kansas City Wizards 4 - D.C. United 0 San Jose Earthquakes 0 - Real Salt Lake 3 Los Angeles Galaxy 1 - New England Revolution 0 Although I'm still in england I've managed to see quite a bit of the opening games. Seatlle's 36,000+ attendance was expected which shows how far the MLS has come, New york getting 25,000 and selling out the next game too shows what a new stadium can do. I believe once the new teams enter and the new stadiums are built the MLS will be in the top 3 attended leagues in the world. The only dissapointment was Dallas, I can't see them lasting tbh, looks like Texas only wants one team.
lildave3 Posted 28 March 2010 Posted 28 March 2010 Love how there's Will Smith, then things I don't know and then Wilt Chamberlain just added on the bottom.
