Berner didn't make the Switzerland squad :(

He ain't even in the extended, 30-man team. Can't quite believe what feckers Hitzfeld has nominated. They're either old, limping (e.g. injured), blind or everything at once. But judge for yourselves:

GOALKEEPERS

Diego Benaglio (Wolfsburg)

Johnny Leoni (FC Zurich)

Marco Woelfli (Young Boys Berne)

DEFENDERS

Mario Eggimann (Hanover)

Philippe Senderos (Everton)

Stephane Grichting (Auxerre)

Steve von Bergen (Hertha Berlin)

Stephan Lichtsteiner (Lazio Roma)

Christoph Spycher (Frankfurt)

Reto Ziegler (Sampdoria)

MIDFIELDERS

Valon Behrami (West Ham)

Tranquillo Barnetta (Leverkusen)

Goekhan Inler (Udinese)

Benjamin Huggel (Basle)

Pirmin Schwegler (Frankfurt)

Gelson Fernandes (St-Etienne)

Xherdan Shaqiri (Basle)

Marco Padalino (Sampdoria)

Hakan Yakin (Lucerne)

STRIKERS

Alex Frei (Basle)

Marco Streller (Basle)

Eren Derdiyok (Leverkusen)

Blaise N'Kufo (Twente Enschede)

Biggest unpleasant names in that list are Leoni (who's had a shit season for FC Zurich), Eggimann (who's had a shit season for Hannover), von Bergen (who's had a shit season for Hertha), Spycher (who plays on Berner's position and who's had a shit season for Frankfurt), Behrami (who's had a shit season for West Ham), Senderos (who's hardly ever featured for Everton), Grichting (too old), Shaqiri (whom I've hardly ever noticed in his season for Basel), Padalino (who's done feck all for Sampdoria this season and mostly warmed the bench), Alex Frei (who's still doubtful for the WC) and N'Kufo (who turns 35 soon and has never done well on an international level).

I wonder on what grounds these picks were made - it can't be based on form or appearances or else our very own Bruno would be part of the starting eleven for sure.

The players currently on hold are:

Ludovic Magnin (letting it slide in Stuttgart, coming back to Switzerland next season), Valentin Stocker (Basle - should be in the first 18 at least), Fabio Coltorti (Racing Santander - and way better than Leoni), Fabian Lustenberger (another Hertha player), Nassim Ben Khailfa (Grasshoppers Zurich - part of the youth squad that won the WC in Nigeria), Albert Bunjaku (Nuremberg's topscorer in 2009/2010) and François Affolter, a talented young defender from BSC Young Boys (Berne).

Alas, my predictions: We'll get hammered by Spain and Chile and may sneak a draw against Honduras. Yes, I am THAT optimistic. lol

Essentially, we're shit. And I'm not even too bothered about it.

is that the former spurs player? I would have thought he'd have retired (from international football at least) by now - he's about 34/35 now isn't he?

Yes, that's him - but he's merely 24. Played for Spurs in 2004. Already four years ago - how time passes by.

According to local press, Christoph Spycher is highly likely to miss out on the World Cup due to injury now. Which means Bruno could be given a shot...

... if it wasn't for Hitzfeld calling up Ludovic "Grandad" Magnin.

Oh well, there's still hope. :fc:

Out of his own mouth the disabled condemns himself. A top five defender eh? Kind of tallies with my assessment of him as an England 'C' lister when you THINK about it.

The Scouse git retired because 'people like Wes Brown' were being played ahead of him. Sounds like you don't have a particularly high opinion of the Manure second stringer - so when you THINK about it where does that leave Carragher in the international pecking order?

And considering that the red shite ignored Capello's calls to come out of retirement and be part of England's third string pairing during the qualification campaign why has the twat suddently gone arse over tit and answered the clarion call now just before the finals? Couldn't be anything to do with it being a bit of a jolly going to a major tourno (without having had to go through all the jet lag followed by compulsory away day defeat to Barnstoneworth United)?

Couldn't be anything to with P7 in the Premier League, Champions League Group Stage exit, FA Cup giant killing fodder could it? Or those rumours about natural wastage going through the Anusfield revolving door? Kind of proves my point when you THINK about it. In fact, when you THINK about it, lame brain, everything that you have written is in complete agreement with my own assessment of the Merseyshiter. But because your spleen is where your grey matter should be you can't see that.

Capello and his predecessors have only ever considered Carragher as a squad player, cover for the more accomplished central defenders available to them. Carragher is, at best, a solid, dependable club stopper who if it wasn't for a rather fortunate accident of birth, would be shoring up the leaky defences of mid to lower Premier League sides. He is a triumph of brawn over brain, power over technique...

...who, when you THINK about it is a kind of RETARD's Steve Walsh...

Your argument loses all credibility as you have to try and mock words like Anfield and turn them into words that dont even exist..

If you seriously dont think that Carragher is a good defender then fai enough but I seriously hope he goes to the World Cup and proves you wrong, you clearly have a problem with Liverpool and you let this affect your opinion on their international players, pretty sad don't you think?

Like I said Carragher is a good back up player for the centre backs and he has only taken one recognised right back and Carragher can clearly play across the back four and is strong and reliable in these positions so makes perfect sense, shame your brain can't see this, saying that you think Lampard shouldnt start for England, says it all.

Looks a quite physical side to me. Although in that respect I too am very surprised Bunjaku hasn't been selected. Quite unreliable but has shown he can destroy decent defenses on his day. A bit like the Danish side, I feel the Swiss team has a decent spine, but the depth isn't there. Hitzfeld isn't in the minority of coaches when he selects the 'routiniers' instead of the in-form untried players though...
