morris1234 Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Right, need a bit of help after just passing my driving test! So if anybody knows of any companies that do cheap car insurance for young males please share . Whether it is from experience or a friend of a friend, anything will do really as some of the quotes i have been getting on compare sites have been shocking (even after getting quotes for cars such as a 1998 PGT106) Also it would be great if you could recommend the cheapest cars to insure along with it too. thanks!!
orangecity23 Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 I got my insurance from ecar insurance (www.ecarinsurance.co.uk) when I passed my test. Paid about £800 to insure a '97 1.4Litre Polo for a year on 3rd party, fire and theft. Basically, for cars, go for something in a low insurance group. WhatCar's website has a thing with used car info, where you can check out different models and get data on the insurance group etc. Basic rule though - smaller less powerful engines is cheaper! There can be a hefty difference between insuring a 1.0L Corsa or similar to insuring a 1.4L Corsa. The bad news is, whatever you get it will end up being pricey to insure. Bloody insurance companies! Good Luck!
morris1234 Posted 23 June 2010 Author Posted 23 June 2010 thanks! whn did you pass? because i just tried that same website with that same car and got quoted £10500.51!!! that is with an experienced name driver on it aswell, no accidents or convictions to my name etc all clean, garage parking etc etc ect. this is going to be a right bugger thanks though!

Small cars with small engines that are slow at accelerating are best! Also, put your parents on as second drivers, have it on TPFT and use comparison websites.
Alexikokopops Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Follow these tips. I'm 23, but was recently in an accident, and my quotes ranged from £600 to £2500.
jonthefox Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 my tip is get your dad or someone whos been driving for years to be the lead name on the policy and you be a designated second driver. your still legal to drive it when you like and you should be quids in.

However if the insurance company finds out you're doing this then they can void the insurance, and you don't get the benefit of building up a no claims bonus for future years.
BENTHEBLUE Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 I think you will find Fully comp isn't much more than third party ect. I got a quote of £619 for my latest insurance. I had a look to see how much just third party would cost with the same insurer and it was £613!
Tabou Posted 25 June 2010 Posted 25 June 2010 I would definately try Tesco Value Car Insurance. Yes you don't get all the WIndowscreen cover, etc etc and it has a high excess but I've just insured a X5 for £1000 a year, which at 22y/o seems pretty bloody cheap. Admiral wanted £2000 and MOrethan (my current insurer) won't cover me!
Fox92 Posted 30 June 2010 Posted 30 June 2010 Have been looking all month for car insurance, its really expensive, no wonder people drive without it. I have to bike to places such as the post office, college etc and its horrible in this weather. Wish I could afford insurance.
Edmund Posted 30 June 2010 Posted 30 June 2010 Do your pass plus mate. I saved around 30% with tesco. It only costs 20-40 quid but the saving you make far outweighs this. Also you get experience on the motorways which is beneficial.

I know he's a bit of a smug cunt, but following Martin Lewis' tips saved me about £200.
dandannieldanok Posted 30 June 2010 Posted 30 June 2010 However if the insurance company finds out you're doing this then they can void the insurance, and you don't get the benefit of building up a no claims bonus for future years. Don't see why they should void your insurance, it's perfectly legal. You're right about the no claims thing, you will eventually have to start being the lead driver at some point to get it.

You're right about the no claims thing, you will eventually have to start being the lead driver at some point to get it. Although it's not illegal, insurance companies aren't going to be happy because they're insuring a high risk driver but not getting a high premium for it. I guess they could just have it in their terms and conditions that you can't do it, hence allowing they to void it. Either way, you could get screwed over if you do it, so it's worth being careful.
SeCrEt FoX Posted 30 June 2010 Posted 30 June 2010 Try http://www.adrianflux.co.uk/ They supposed to be pretty good with young drivers and www.quinn-direct.com/car-insurance which was my first insurer where i had a Pug 306 1.6 xs 3 dr which a lot of sites gave me silly quotes well over 1-2k and they quoted 780ish. Think things like 3dr and things like xs's attract a lot of young boy racers so really stay clear of things like that and get a nice cheap little run around ie a corsa just to build your confidence and experience and like i say cheaper the better then it wont be too demoralizing pranging or writing off but them sites might come of use. Using direct sites instead of comparative web sites will be cheaper too obviously less overheads and no commission.

Suppose so, but I don't think they can do an awful lot about it. As an aside, does anyone know if your insurance premium will go up if you've had to attend one of those road safety courses that you can take to swerve 3 points?

Shame really, I'm with Quinn on my Fiesta, nearly £2,000 per year but the next lowest quote was at least £400 more. Insurance is an absolute bitch though! Good luck.

More worryingly if you intend to be the main driver but declare yourself as a named driver your policy will actually be declared void. This process is known as “fronting”. It has become easy for insurers to identify offenders by matching the name in which the car is registered to the names of the main and named drivers
