Wycombe Fox Posted 12 July 2010 Posted 12 July 2010 We're looking to book a holiday to Turkey but know very little about the place. My main criteria is somewhere with a sandy beach but I understand these are few and far between in Turkey. Has anybody got any advice or info please? Have tried Google but you can't beat first hand experience. Thanks.
Webbo Posted 12 July 2010 Posted 12 July 2010 I've been to Turkey twice in the last 2 years. First time Altinkum which is small and quiet, not much to do at night except eat. The small beach was sandy but covered in dock ends. Last year we went to Kusadassi which is bigger and closest to all the Roman/Greek ruins, if you're into that sort of thing. We went all inclusive but the beer was piss weak/crap. All the shops take sterling so you don't need to take much local currency with you. You need to hand over a £10 note over for everyone in your party when you arrive for a visa. Make sure you have to right money because they don't give change. In summary, highly recommended, good weather, interesting places to see and really friendly people.
AoWW Posted 12 July 2010 Posted 12 July 2010 Olu Deniz is fantastic - beautifully scenic and a nice, friendly resort. But don't be fooled - much as it looks sandy, only some sections of the beach are... the rest is shingle. If you do go there be sure to try the paragliding... awesome and worth every penny. Olu Deniz Patara beach is, I believe, the longest beach in Turkey - and beautifully fine sand, so that might be worth a look. I only went to the beach, though, and didn't really get to see any kind of resort area, so can't really comment on that, but the beach is fantastic. Patara Beach
Daggers Posted 12 July 2010 Posted 12 July 2010 I saw Midnight Express and would caution against the urge to smuggle drugs out of the country - you end up having to masturbate in a small box as your girlfriend exposes her breasts and cries. Not good. Not good at all.
Tilley Posted 12 July 2010 Posted 12 July 2010 NOT MARMARIS. Try Gumbet. It was close to Bodrum airport and the city itself, right on the coast, quiet but lively at the same time, great range of activities like water sports, boat trips, water parks etc, nice bars and restaurants and the typical Turkish stalls and shops. My best holiday by far.
Guest Bilo Posted 12 July 2010 Posted 12 July 2010 Lovely country and people, I'd go back to Turkey tomorrow. The tourist resorts are really quite pleasant as touristy places go, Bodrum and Marmaris are bustling if you like that kind of thing whereas Icmeler is a little quieter. As Webbo says, Kusadasi is lovely too and while I've never been, I hear Altinkum is great. It's well worth paying a visit to Pamukkale as well to see the salt baths and Roman ruins, absolutely fascinating place. Same goes for Ephesus, absolutely great if you're a bit of a history geek. The weather is generally great, red hot in the midst of summer and hardly any rain. It's pretty cheap out there too in terms of your basics, eating out, beer and general souvenirs are much cheaper than in many other parts of Europe. All in all, definitely worth a visit.

Cat Burger Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 Went to Alanya last year, it was expensive but that's because it was full of Swedes and Norwegians. Great stuff, the last thing you want on a holiday is lots of English people.
