danielpholt Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 I just wanted to canvas opinion on the foxes player, as I'm considering signing up to the service, even though I'm less than happy about it. Is it a good service, worth the money? Etc etc. Seems to me that it's just another means for the club to charge the fans for access to latest news and what not. Being a big fan of the NHL I find it rather amazing the lack of free content that comes out of the club. Now I understand that the club might not be in a position to give away free online radio commentary, but charging for player interviews and the like seems a bit rich. Anyway, is it worth the fairly expensive yearly fee or should I just hobble on without it?
Salieri Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 I wouldn't call it particularly expensive (£34.99 for a years subscription). As i'm stuck down near Lands End and can't get to many games it's a godsend for me, even if it can be a bit temperamental at times. Fans who follow the club home and away would spend hundreds of pounds per season following the team, in relative terms the cost of Foxes Player is minute. If you cannot get to many games then i would definitely recommend getting it as there really isn't an alternative for listening to matches.
okie fox Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 If you live close enough to Leicester to get Radio Leicester on your radio, then it's probably not worth it. I don't so I buy it for the away game commentaries. It also gives the video highlights a couple of days later, which I watch even if I went to the game to see different angles of the goals, major incidents, etc. And you can also listen to most other (non-Leicester) matches. Only the really big clubs (Man U, Chelsea, etc.) don't contribute commentaries.
MC Prussian Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 A must-have for all foxiles. And as SP has already pointed out, not overly expensive (less than £2 a month). It also features some replays of classic LCFC matches past, like the playoff final vs Swindon Town in 1993, for instance. There's also a few interesting interviews here and there. The regular BBC Radio Leicester stream - which is always available through their website - has the uncanny abillity to cut you off once a Leicester game has started...
Jay Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 As others have pointed out the only thing it is any good for is the commentary, everything else is a waste of money. It's a total rip off of a service and is a load of crap in all honesty, however I can't get radio Leicester where I live so have to subscribe
Lillehamring Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 a necessary evil i'm afraid... it costs me the price of a pint, every month and usually it is fine.
danielpholt Posted 26 August 2010 Author Posted 26 August 2010 Looks like i might pick it up for a month to see what its like. You say we get video highlights, are we talking extended highlights or just your bog standered SSN stuff?
okie fox Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Looks like i might pick it up for a month to see what its like. You say we get video highlights, are we talking extended highlights or just your bog standered SSN stuff? It's extended highlights, usually 5+ minutes.
Collymore Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Anyone else sick of having to sit through 20 seconds of kasabian at the beginning of every news item!!? I'm glad the birch is no longer doing his quizes on there as that really did make it feel like a waste of money. It is good for the commentary but wouldn't really be worth if it wasn't for it. It even did some commentary on the pre season friendlies which was a pleasent surprise.
Candidcamera Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 It costs £39.99 a year and is just about worth it if you don't live in Leucester and listen to the match day commentary. I do go to some home matches and away matches and could catch commentaries on local radio when they are in my area of the country. I seriouely thought about not renewing it this year but it was taken automatically and I hadn't thought to cancel. I very rarely use the other services in video. I find the sound on those are pretty poor.

Presume you mean the price of a pint in England? How much is a pint over there now? Last time I was in Oslo it was nearly a tenner for a 500ml beer!

Last time I was in Oslo it was nearly a tenner for a 500ml beer! heh, yeah, depends where you go and depends on the exchange rate but, on oslo, for a lager in a pub it can vary between 3 quid and 8 quid...., but usually about a fiver. so, 3.99 a month is ok, especially as you can share the log on between a few people.
Ford Super Sunday Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Got rid of it when it turned into 'Player' from 'World' because they stopped letting you download the clips DRM free, and they're not flat embedded into the player with no way of saving them. Such a shame, because I remember World was a good service. I'm sure Player is just as good, probably better, but I want to be able to save the clips permernantly.

Yes it was handy being able to save them. By the way, your avatar looks suspiciously like the ABC "squiggle". Where did you find that?

And as others have pointed out, it hardly breaks the bank.

Four words Chasers. War. On. Everything. (Plus an australian friend who introduced me to it, and i'm interested in world TV media, and Australia is now taking my interest)

In fact, there's so many good bits! What a show. Get me a job with the ABC!

Collymore Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 If you do get foxesplayer, the commentary on the highlights is pure comedy and worth the money alone. I've just watched the Burnley highlights and the commentator thinks Moreno is Solarno, not once but about 3 times :crylaugh: :crylaugh: :crylaugh: :crylaugh: :crylaugh: Also DNG's name during the Leeds highlights is Enggguesssssen :crylaugh: :crylaugh:
