Jordan Posted 6 September 2010 Posted 6 September 2010 What are your favorite images from sporting history? Post anything that -captures the essence of the sport -expresses the intense emotion of sport -is emblematic of its day -is a high-quality piece of sports journalism -is of an excellent artistic standard and/or -is personally resonant. American football: New York Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle in his final season, 1964. Baseball: The incomparable Lou Gehrig, July 4, 1939--moments before delivering his famous speech, months before his untimely death. Thousands of fans invade the Yankee Stadium field after Chris Chambliss' home run wins the 1976 American League pennant. If I could go back in time and attend any sporting event in New York, I'd choose that over every other game. Basketball: In basketball vernacular, when a player gets dunked on embarrassingly, he's said to have been "posterized." John Starks of the New York Knicks made Horace Grant and Michael Jordan join him on kids' bedroom walls all over New York in 1993. Football: Brighton vs. Doncaster [at Gillingham], Valentine's Day/"Fans United Day," 1998 USA 2-0 Mexico, 2002 FIFA World Cup. Enough said. Ice hockey: Boston Bruins goalie "Sugar" Jim Henry and famous Montreal Canadiens winger Maurice "Rocket" Richard, 1952.
Alexikokopops Posted 6 September 2010 Posted 6 September 2010 Coincidentally I was searching for this picture today: Mike Gatting after that ball in the first test of the 1993 Ashes.
FoxyPV Posted 6 September 2010 Posted 6 September 2010 High catching - one of the great skills in hurling. There's nothing better than watching the back catch the ball, break a couple of tackles and then send the ball 80yards up the pitch
Joe. Posted 6 September 2010 Posted 6 September 2010 Was just going to post the Ali picture, love it. A huge social statement at the time. For those who don't know this is 1938 - Joe Louis, black American, defeating Max Schmeling, representing Nazi Germany and used very much as a political pawn by them. Schmeling won their first encounter two years previous, but Louis absolutely annihilated him second time around with a first round knock-out.
Jackirius Posted 6 September 2010 Posted 6 September 2010 [ Her right nipple looks like a love heart. How cute.
Zingari Posted 6 September 2010 Posted 6 September 2010 Is that a young Richard Dreyfuss? no it's Chas and Dave in the early years
Narborough_fox Posted 6 September 2010 Posted 6 September 2010 What is this, sorry for sounding stupid. I heard something about it but I have no idea. Sorry if I am being really really stupid.

Black Power salute. Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics refused to sing the national anthem and instead raised their fists as above to demonstrate against racism and such. Medals subsequently stripped and both were expelled from the games. They got a few death threats back home as well I believe.

And this was when they still had many forms of apartheid in the USA, with many Blacks / Whites state run only facilities.
Fox You Forest Posted 6 September 2010 Posted 6 September 2010 They made a film about it a few years ago I had no luck finding it at the time, might have another poke around the net. http://www.imdb.com/video/wab/vi385548825/
Joe. Posted 6 September 2010 Posted 6 September 2010 And while we're on the subject of apartheid... Cracking book 'Playing The Enemy' by John Carlin (Invictus was based on it) about this story.
