Well, by 1968, a combination of laws (most notably the Civil Rights Act of 1964) at the federal level and Supreme Court decisions (i.e. Brown v. Board of Education, 1954) had killed shameful institutional racism segregation, but racism was still a nationwide plague, hence the protest. Dr. King was assassinated just months prior to Mexico City 1968.

Jordan Posted 22 July 2012 Author Posted 22 July 2012 bob beamon flying in mexico 68 Fvcking amazing. Torvill and Dean. Far and away the most easy-to-root-for duo that discipline has ever had. I wasn't even two years old when they won gold. But my mom--who doesn't even have a drop of British blood in her--will instantaneously yelp, "Torvill and Dean!" whenever anyone mentions ice dancing. I rememeber their comeback in 1994, when they just fell short. Aww! As an American, I made an egregious omission in my original post: "Do you believe in miracles? YES!" 1974: the wonder, the Kaiser, and chance... Just one minute in, it looked like Total Football had won, but fate and chance can be cruel... And if one can consider this a sport: The stoic Spassky, the manic Fischer, and the most famous match in chess history.
