There's plenty that can be done.

The movement of water is very predictable but we insist on urbanising flood plains - have you seen the difference between water over soil and water over concrete? - removing natural defenses, and not working in unison with the natural flow.

Once again, I take your point, and there are plenty of examples of "bad" building on flood plain, but Carlisle like most towns and cities, is built on a river. Most of the houses flooded there are 100+ years old - it's not like Barrats have knocked them up in the last decade.

The bridge at Pooley Bridge has stood for 250 years before this weekend before being washed away. It stands at the outflow from Ullswater and I doubt the flood plain has altered much at that point in centuries.

It was built according to what was needed, forcasted by experts. You don't think they just send up some random MP up to Cumbria to guess what's needed? I think it was a bit more than 45k as well.

They may as well have sent scousefox up to guess what's needed. 45k was the amount that the minister quoted for Carlisle.

I agree with you. but there have been a lot of roads and other things built in the last 100 years. And again I agree with you about the bridge but the flooding is very predictable and you'd have thought they would have seen the weak point there if they were doing their jobs properly and given the money and power to make the necessary changes.

It's the same here in the South of France. Terrible flooding due to building permissions and inadequate or non-existant thought to flood defences.

All packed ready for a flying visit tomorrow. Leaving at 6am for Glenridding. Probably going to walk from Glenridding to Howtown via Place Fell and then get the boat back. Then a few beers in the hotel. Really looking forward to this one, Makes a change being able to pack light without needing fleeces, rain jackets, hats and gaiters for once!

Wall to wall sunshine and stupendous views of Ullswater!

Was up there last weekend in Ambleside, walked through Loughrigg Fell and spent some time in Rydal and Grasmere too. Brilliant weather and views, possibly a little uncomfortable for walking (not often at the Lakes) but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Take me back there!

Sat outside in the beer garden at the Glenridding Hotel in the sunshine. Nice 5 hour walk over the fells this afternoon. Turned my ankle at one point so struggled the last mile but seems OK now.

Cheers!
