Yes, the Hardnott Pass is not for the faint hearted.

Just got back from another splendid weekend. Stayed in The George in Keswick (absolutely splendid, monster sized meat pies). Climbed Skiddaw and Little Man. Not the most challenging mountain, but great view on the way up . Summit shrouded in cloud though but a good time had by all!

Skiddaw and the George pies! Great weekend!!

Both favourites of ours. That and the sandwich shop round the corner from the George. We like Skiddaw, after that awful first incline, it's a simple walk but it's usually very empty and in my opinion has some of the best views in the area.

Did you go up via Latrigg or did you drive up to Skiddaw?

Via Latrigg. The first incline (after the car park) is a right bastard. I see that all the guide books call it an "easy" walk. I suppose it is not technically difficult, and easy to navigate but it certainly made my 41 year old ass sweat a bit! The cow pie in the George was absolutely fantastic and the breakfast also not bad.

That's three "weekenders" this year which is not bad for a guy with a busy job and family. Already planning a walk up Haystacks in April and then Scafell Pike (probably in June - will need a long day!)

Yeah I like that it's considered easy. I understand why but it's also, in equal parts, horrendous.

Helvellyn via Striding Edge may be technically far more challenging but no part of it is as physically tiring as that slope!

Having said that, I sprinted down that stretch last time we went and that was enormous fun, if occasionally a little hairy. #sturdyankles

Yeah I did think about running down. It almost seems like a good idea when you're doing that downhill walking, bracing each step with clenches of all your leg muscles. But I figured if I started to run then it would only end badly....

Off for my first visit of 2015 to the Lakes this weekend. Just a one nighter this time.

Planning to do Red Pike and Haystacks from Buttermere. Not the highest peak but a good walk all the same.

Weather looks a bit iffy but fingers crossed!

Enjoy yourself, it's wonderful up there.

Sounds like they've had a rough time up there this weekend. Keswick and Cockermouth have been flooded and just heard that the famous stone bridge that gives the village of Pooley Bridge its name has been swept away by the floodwater.

We were due to be in Keswick this weekend but postponed until next week some time ago.

I posted some pictures and vid footage yesterday. I forgot about this thread. Yes Cockermouth was about to be flooded again. The bridge has gone. Hit by a caravan apparently. Is all  the wonder the Lake District worth it?

Watching the devastation and knowing how this will affect people's lives I wonder why the govt. haven't put so much more money and effort into flood defences. If only they acted so quickly for the people in cumbria and Somerset etc... as they have acted to bomb Syria. That money could be better spent.

To be fair FIF,they had 1/2 a years rainfall in 48 hrs,no matter how much you do you struggle to cope with that.

You think they can build flood defences as soon as it starts raining?

We're heading up there this weekend. Was planning to do a good walk but am now seeing if anyone needs a hand clearing up instead. We were wondering whether to still go but the message from the local businesses is "we are open, don't stay away!"

I see where you're coming from but there's only so much that can be done. There was an exceptional amount of rain and it all has to run off somewhere. You can't build a six metre wall along every river in the country. But there should be support for those who do get flooded. The defences built in the last few years in Carlisle have already prevented two floods.

They already built the flood defences for Carlisle. They failed. MP bragging that they spent 45k on it. Remind me how much one forsy into Syria costs?

that's what's happening now with our new climatic conditions. Warnings have been around for over 30 years at least.

There's plenty that can be done.

The movement of water is very predictable but we insist on urbanising flood plains - have you seen the difference between water over soil and water over concrete? - removing natural defenses, and not working in unison with the natural flow.

It was built according to what was needed, forcasted by experts. You don't think they just send up some random MP up to Cumbria to guess what's needed? I think it was a bit more than 45k as well.

I love the idea of Kendall and Soulsby getting the tape measure out and surveying the A50/New Parks Blvd island for tarmac.

Keith Vaz working out the square mtrage of concrete needed to replace the flyover.

Kendall can get the tape measure out around me any time she wants for a measure.

No. They just leave it to whichever relative has the contract.
