Wycombe Fox Posted 3 October 2010 Author Posted 3 October 2010 There's only one Peter Taylor Him and Junior are doing a great job at Bradford
JoeyB Posted 3 October 2010 Posted 3 October 2010 what makes it worse is stoke and hull were in league 1 and 2 respectively!
FrankieADZ Posted 3 October 2010 Posted 3 October 2010 Oh the days.....until a certain game and the downward slope
Guy Posted 3 October 2010 Posted 3 October 2010 Top Top Top Top Top of the Prem.! As you said, 10 years ago to the w/end indeed - made even more satisfying by the fact that our being top of the pile stood for two whole weeks thanks to the international break of the time! Life was sweet even though Taylor had already seen off Collymore to all intents and purposes, plus Walshie and Cottee....moves that were later to prove costly in all essence. Of course we all knew that Peter Taylor was, at that time the luckiest man on the planet to be in the position that he was and was already deemed as being a better manager to the naive few than his illustrious predecessor! How so differently it all ended for him a year later of course! In essence though we'd just had an easy run of games whilst remaining unbeaten. We'd won a couple, drew a couple and had not fallen to anybody - mainly as we'd played nobody that spectacular up to that point, mostly just teams like we were in stature - West Ham et al. Not even Redstar Belgrade in Europe were anything to write home as opposition about after the 1-1 home draw with them around that time! His most expensive flop Akinbiyi couldn't hit a barn door though and the few goals he did score were fortunate ones. As for his partner in crime, Trevor Benjamin - not Premiership quality at the time really, never was, The fact that he got a second crack in the Prem. by the time we'd returned there with Micky Adams in 2003 was laughable but we still loved ole Trev.! Of course reality was soon to beckon and the fact that by the time we faced our next of kin in the Premiership, 2nd placed Man. Utd on October 18th 2000 and duly went on to lose 0-3 at Filbert St. perhaps said it all and was the second most defining point in the season - the most defining moment being the latter FA Cup quarter final defeat at home to Wycombe of course, which took the biscuit! Before that costy disaster though the league form was still maintained in good fashion with memorable home wins over the likes of Liverpool, Leeds and West Ham after we'd surrendered our top place. A final finishing of 13th place was an almighty disappointment compared to how we'd started but worse was to follow the next season of course! Whether we'd have stayed up with Peter Taylor was (and still remains) a moot point re 2001-02 season.
ThurmastonFox Posted 3 October 2010 Posted 3 October 2010 Interestingly, Ade Akinbadbuy was Sven's first signing at Notts County - Ade part 2 anyone??
Malinki Posted 3 October 2010 Posted 3 October 2010 Best part of that day was the fact that not only were we top of the league but D*rby were rock bottom - heady times indeed, hopefully one day we will get back to those heights
Wycombe Fox Posted 3 October 2010 Author Posted 3 October 2010 I celebrated a bit too hard, fell over in the shower, knocked myself out and ended up in hospital!
Corky Posted 3 October 2010 Posted 3 October 2010 Was a very special day. It is why I love seeing Henry's volley against Man Utd.
Guy Posted 3 October 2010 Posted 3 October 2010 Interestingly, Ade Akinbadbuy was Sven's first signing at Notts County - Ade part 2 anyone?? Ha, I wonder who Akin "Badbuy-i" is ripping off now with yet another sizeable signing on fee no doubt.....!
Guy Posted 3 October 2010 Posted 3 October 2010 I celebrated a bit too hard, fell over in the shower, knocked myself out and ended up in hospital! Sorry for the detail but I was also in the shower at my Mum's house when Rad.5 announced the unthinkable, that we were top after Mancs had failed to Arsenal - and that we would remain so for the next fortnight, thanks to Keegan's (?) England at the time, meaning the int. break - to be replaced by part time caretaker of the time, our Peter Taylor shortly after - I think??! I suppose many would now say with hindsight that it's a pity he didn't stay there.....!
