Alexikokopops Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 I have a question for you all. For reasons I am too lazy to go into here, I need to find out what are the dominant groups/languages amongst the Asian population in Leicester. Punjabi, Gujurati or even Urdu? Preferably by the end of the (work) day. I literally have no idea. Don't worry, there are no sinister motives. It's not like I'm BlueBrett
Alexikokopops Posted 22 October 2010 Author Posted 22 October 2010 Ok, having actually used Google I found this: Alongside English there are around 70 languages and/or dialects spoken in the city. In addition to English, eight languages are commonly spoken: Gujarati is the preferred language of 16% of the city’s residents, Punjabi 3%, Somali 3% and Urdu 2%. Other smaller language groups include Hindi, Arabic, Bengali and Polish If anyone has anything else to add, then feel free.
Tilley Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 Kurdish aswell, I know ALOT of Kurdish speaking people.
Haylz Lou Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 I'm not 100% but I think that the council do "diversity" reports every year... might be worth checking with them
Alexikokopops Posted 22 October 2010 Author Posted 22 October 2010 I'm not 100% but I think that the council do "diversity" reports every year... might be worth checking with them I found the one from 2008, I'll see if I can find any more recent ones. Thanks!
Guest Bilo Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 The ethnic breakdown as of the 2001 census among Asian people in Leicester looked like this: Asian or Asian British: Indian 72033 25.73% Asian or Asian British: Pakistani 4276 1.53% Asian or Asian British: Bangladeshi 1926 0.69% Asian or Asian British: Other Asian 5516 1.97% Which probably rules out Urdu as being the most spoken language as the numbers of Pakistanis is actually fairly small. The religious groups looked like this in the same year. Christian 125187 44.72% Buddhist 638 0.23% Hindu 41248 14.74% Jewish 417 0.15% Muslim 30885 11.03% Sikh 11796 4.21% Other religions 1179 0.42% No religion 48789 17.43% Religion not stated 19782 7.07% Not too sure what implications this will have on the linguistics of Leicester but it does again show that Hindus and Sikhs when combined outnumber Muslims by almost two to one, so the chances are that languages of an Indian origin rather than a Pakistani or even Arabic pre-dominate. All speculative though.
Houdini Logic Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 So many jokes and not enough energy to fight off the replies. I'll stay quiet - I hate being ill

Guest Bilo Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 The dominant language in Pakistan is actually Punjabi, although it's official language is Urdu!!! Ah, so Urdu could be a contender. I'm rubbish at Indo-Pakistani stuff. <_<
Alexikokopops Posted 22 October 2010 Author Posted 22 October 2010 Ah, so Urdu could be a contender. I'm rubbish at Indo-Pakistani stuff. <_< Me too! From what I've discovered so far, it seems Gujarati is dominant. I really have no idea though! Alexikokopops Posted 22 October 2010 Author Posted 22 October 2010 Am I right in thinking the Hindu population tends to be around Belgrave? And Muslim in Highfields? DR THE SINGH, is there a largely Sikh populated area of Leicester? I'm using religion as a proxy here because I'm thinking about where I've seen temples/mosques etc.
StanSP Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 Me too! From what I've discovered so far, it seems Gujarati is dominant. I really have no idea though! The most dominant 'Asian' language is Gujrati>Urdu>Punjabi just basically on population!! But out of the Asian languages in my judgement is Gujrati is 60% Urdu 22% Punjabi 18% In terms of wealth i would say Sikhs = Hindus , although i would day Sikhs are probably abit more but way way ahead of there Muslim counterparts, and interms of education is would be the same, but with Hindus having the slight advantage!!!
