January 2011

January 2011 could well turn out to be the most pivotal month in the 126-years history of Leicester City Football Club.

Who comes and who goes has never been so important or as critical as it is now and particularly so given our precarious and volatile current league position.

If LCFC is to be the force that it has been in the past, if it is to have a team that will not just survive in the Premier League but will challenge for honours and aspire to the giddy heights of the Champions League, then what transpires at the Walkers during the next thirty days or so can make our club great.

Get it wrong and we could so easily find ourselves back in League One.

We have in Sven, a world-class manager, who is used to dealing with the world's best players but for all his credentials, he is finding that life in the Championship is not a bed of roses. It is gritty, tough, no quarter asked or given and the most important thing is getting three points regardless of how one does it.

The end justifies the means.

The question 'Who would you like the Foxes to sign?' is to my mind another 'rocking horse' – it gives us something to do but doesn't get us anywhere!

Bill Shankley said 'Football is not a matter of life and death, it's more important than that!' Well, I reckon that sentiment applies to the forthcoming transfer window in respect of LCFC.

It is not a question of who would you like but:-

1. What positions do we wish to strengthen?

2. Prioritise these

3. Having identified a named target, establish their interest and reaction

4. What is the fee demanded and what is our ceiling?

5. (And probably the most important decision of all is) do we have the player who can provide the service required to ensure that that player is effective?

Last year saw notable changes in the fortunes of most dramatically Manchester City and to a slightly lesser degree, QPR.

Now that the financial merry-go-round seems to have settled, I believe that a similar opportunity is there for us but Sven has got to get it right.

My real focus now is on the team we take to Sheffield on 1st February. That hopefully will give us our first real indication of where our Club is really heading.

lol get over yourself mate!

It will be really interesting to see who we sign in Jan. Either way, get down Filbert Way, get pissed up and support the team for better or worse!

We have no devine right to be up there challenging for promotion, we need a lot to go right for us (as do most other clubs) for that to happen. So enjoy the ride and don't worry about it.

One of the most important things Sven has to consider when signing players is "can this player battle, scrap and fight his way through games?" I realised on Saturday whilst shouting 'Bednar off', it is not always about technical ability and talent, in this league it often comes down to desire and willingness to hurt yourself fighting to win the game. I don't wish to sound like a drill sergeant; but, I think a huge part of winning promotion is battling, scalping and fighting your ways through games. Both Sven and Paulo have previously said we get out battled. For example, look at Stoke, they are always said to play 'ugly football' but they got themselves promoted and have stayed up because they win the one on ones as well as winning all the second balls. On Saturday when I looked down the starting 11 and saw no 'Abe' but instead 'Oakley' my head dropped and I could see failure, however Oakley was our best player because he was willing to battle and scrap for what often seemed like lost causes. If Sven really wants to win promotion then he needs a few traditional English rock hard Scrapers as well as the quick talented youngsters.

Unless we are about to discover a trans-dimensional portal in the West Stand, the Birch & his gay lover adopt Levi Porter and we have pingpong ball-shooting women for halftime entertainment - I absolutely fail to understand why this is going to be the most pivotal month in the entire history of the club.

Holloway's January will take some beating as being piviotal, it certainly proved so as we plummeted to our lowest ever level.
