Haydos Posted 24 April 2011 Posted 24 April 2011 I'd look at the possibility of signing Olifinjana from Dull when his loan to Cardiff expires. Big defensive central midfielder, would allow us to cover our defence better, and let us physically dominate midfield and give us a platform to attack from. I've campaigned for him already. Exactly the type of player we need.

Father Ted Posted 24 April 2011 Posted 24 April 2011 I've got a few ideas, some people may think I'm mad but if I was manager I would work on them! Firstly, why not give Andy King a shot as a STRIKER. Great finishing, great runs. He's scored 14 (I think) from midfield so think of how many he could score if he was up front. I would give it a shot. Secondly, I would never ever again play Sol Bamba as a centre-half, he is a completely liability, instead I'd let him maul the midfield. I also feel that our downfall has been due to us having TWO attacking fullbacks. We can't have both Naughton AND Van Aanholt playing at the same time. On Friday, even though we conceded 3, I felt the defence was much more balanced with Naughton and Mee fullbacks as Mee doesn't get on too much. This is why I'd like to see the defence of: Naughton - Vitor - Mee - Berner. Our shittest defence was when we had FOUR ball playing defenders in Naughton, Bamba, Bruma and Van Aanholt - bad news.

Just to balance the argument a bit (It still doesn't particularly interest me ) there's a chance he could still be handy there. I know he makes 'late runs' which are a characteristic of his play but his general intelligence means his movement would still be good enough in my opinion. The thing is he doesn't possess any of the physical attributes required. He's not particularly fast, quick off the mark or strong on the ball so it's fairly moot IMO.
Fox92 Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 Steve Walsh I take back my previous post. As steady as Wellens has been for us since signing, the problem with him is that he rates himself a little too much. How does he? And if he does, good.
Finnegan Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 King isn't a striker. He has less athleticism than even Fryatt did, but Fryatt is an instinctive forward - King isn't. Having good movement as a midfielder is not the same as having good movement as a forward. Besides, it'd clearly be a waste of a very promising midfielder to shove him up front where he can be less involved. I know Thracian sees King through rose tinted glasses and I know he does have a tendency to drift out of games, but when he's on form he is a good, creative force in the middle of our side and he'd be missed if he was taken out of positoon.

Was impressed with the energy of Neil Danns when we played Palace recently, we lack his type of player in the middle of the park. Good shout, Danns was an absolute beast who had all three of our midfielders in his pocket, which was very impressive given the dross around him. That's exactly the type of player we are lacking; a big strong physical terrior who isn't afraid to mix it up when the going get tough. Unfortunately for all his endeavour Wellens is just too small and weak to be able to boss the midfield. When Wellens keeps everything nice and simple he has the ability to be one of the best midfielders at the club, however his ego really does hold him back I'm afraid as he gives the ball away far too often trying to play balls Lionel Messi would be proud of. If we sort the midfield out and get a battler in there I think we could easily secure an additional 10 points a season.
Maybes Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 People not being keen on our 15 goal midfielder. Wow.
Guest Bilo Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 It's quite simple to see what we need. Pace on the flanks and a hard bastard to break up the opposition's play. As much as it would be nice to have 11 players who are comfortable on the ball, technical ability would be secondary to such a player as his guile would be the biggest asset to the team, vital in the Championship. Look at Robbie Savage under MON for example, he and MON would be the first to admit he was weaker technically than Izzet, Lennon or Guppy but his role was to nick the ball from the opposition and give it to one of the more technical players. I'm really not sure we have such a player at the moment, Abe doesn't seem hard enough and Wellens isn't quite in the right mould. As for pace, could we do much worse than Jason Puncheon? Holding his own in the Premiership with Blackpool and looked good against us in a Millwall shirt at The Den. Appears to have had a falling out with Nigel Adkins as well so could be a cheap purchase. Other than that, it's tough to say. Victor Moses could be a decent purchase if Wigan are relegated and they're likely to be looking to sell.
