I think it's vastly important for the F.A. to do this. I will cringe in shame when Brighton visit the Walkers next year. Although last night in a pub some bloke who's a friend of a friend asked me what I did for a living, to which he replied "you some sort of camp ****ing poofta?". Lovely guy. I'm not gay but if I had been, who says that to people anyway. <_<

I'm not one for stereotyping gays I don't think. Some of them are right pansies and prance around but some of them play rugby or other contact sports and are just like your average 'mans man'!. I'm all for stamping out hatred and all that stuff, but I do think we should be allowed to sing 'All of you are gays' to a whole home stadium when we're on the road if we feel like it. Another reason I know I'm not a homophobe aswell as the fact I listen to Wham, is because I once had my hair cut by a gay and I didn't think anything bad about him. Had a right good chat about sequined blouses, 'indoor scarves' and other stuff.

Me personally, I find the Brighton "Does your boyfriend know you're here?!" etc chants pretty funny and in the past have had few qualms about joining in. BUT I'm not saying I speak for everyone, and whilst I might find it to be light-hearted humour I suppose it's more than possible that others, especially fans who are more "obviously gay" than, for example, me, might be intimidated and put off by this kind of thing. So ultimately none of you can give the definitively "correct" point of view about what's acceptable and what's not, because the purported "victims" of the chants are a diverse bunch who don't all react the same to the same situation (that can also be applied to arguably racist chants such as "Where's your poppadom?!" as well I believe...) And obviously in z-layrex's case there's no grey area, it's just plain nasty and potentially insulting. Not that it's worth reacting or getting angry with people like that, just better to laugh them off and seek better company in my experience... When it comes to life in general, I'm not sure active homophobia is quite as big a problem these days as many try to make out. Rather it's the continued assumption of strangers and people you meet for the first time that you're straight that has never been overcome (unless you're a camp queen, not something I have any desire to become...) And so people might make potentially insulting quips and remarks in jest... not out of homophobia, but out of the assumption that they share common homosexual ground with you. Having re-read what I've written, I realise I'm not actually making any particularly great points but what the hell, I've written for a while so I'm gonna bloody post it!

Sorry that was the worst mis-read of a post I've ever committed, I thought you were saying that normally the bloke is a "lovely guy" but he surprised you with what he said in that one situation (something that happens pretty often in my experience!) Having re-read it it's pretty clear that isn't what you were saying at all!

I know this thread's gone totally off topic now, but my gf's brother recently put on a short-film night at a bar in London, and one of the films was a 20 min documentary on a 15 year old gay kid living in one of those shit nothing seaside towns. He goes through absolute hell everyday of his life. He was thrown out of his life-long foster home at 14 when he came out. He gets abuse and even threats of violence just walking to the shop. Some cvnt builder even comes up to him and tells him he makes a mockery of the town. Didn't even realise places like that still existed in this country.
