Skysports.com understands that Oldham Athletic boss Paul Dickov is a contender to fill the managerial vacancy at Watford.

The Hornets are set to begin searching for a new boss after it was confirmed on Friday that Malky Mackay had left to take charge of Championship rivals Cardiff.

Attention will now turn to possible candidates to replace Mackay at Vicarage Road and it is understood that Dickov is in the frame.

Dickov is currently working at League One side Oldham after accepting his first managerial role last summer.

He is highly regarded after doing well at Boundary Park with little budget, a situation the next Watford boss may also have to contend with.

The 38-year-old enjoyed a long playing career with clubs such as Manchester City, Leicester and Blackburn.

Seems weird he was only playing for us around 3 years ago. I hope he gives us 6 points though

Not sure Dickov's ready for the Championship yet.

He'd be on a hiding to nothing to take that job. With Danny Graham and others gone, Watford will do well to stay up.

Expected appointment TBH despite the other outsiders being touted around (some hardly seem any more appealing)

Cheap and knows the limitations of the club.

Hopefully do well (which will be mid-table again)

Sort of route we've gone down before with some success.

Normally people being promoted to the manager's job doesnt work, so reckon they might struggle next season.
