Highfields Riots - 30th Anniversary

And you know that because you were there?

But you're right. All the rioters were hard working, upstanding members of the community who would never do anything illegal (apart from rioting).

Have you ever been to the inner city? Have any of your friends or relatives ever lived there?

Because wherever you're getting your info from, it's out of order.

I was born and raised in Belgrave, my dad was from Braunstone, my mother used to live just off Jarrom Street and my grandma used to live in New Parks, how about you?

Now, do you have proof I'm wrong other than your prejudices?

I've always tried to avoid the inner cities

I always used to pitch up my diddycoy trailer on the leafy outskirts such as Anstey Heights

i didn't want to mix with the riff raff in places like Highfields The thieving bastrads in those places would have your wheels off as soon as your back was turned .

It was a hot summer and we were at the peak of the recession, unemployment was high, although a lot of those rioting had never had a job and didn't want one either.

I've tried the number in your sig, but it's not working - can you let me know opening hours?

Possibly, I don't remember that well.

It was a hot summer and we were at the peak of the recession, unemployment was high, although a lot of those rioting had never had a job and didn't want one either.

There was a feeling amongst the black community that the police picked on them but as I'm not black and I've never lived in Highfields I wouldn't know if that was justified or not.

This is not entirely true.

I grew up with many of the rioters and although I was working in Hull at the time I remember it well.

Most of the guys did have jobs, ok some didn't but I can't remember one who didn't want to work, in fact we regularly used to get up every morning at 4am to find casual work unloading vans down the market.

Not relevant I know but many of them were also very avid city fans, there'd be quite a crowd of us every saturday walking down Lancaster Road to the game. I miss my time spent in the Highfields and have very fond memories.

I was working at the Carousel pub at the time and can well remember the trouble over the Swain Street bridge, (in the days before the current road layout) Loads of police running up the road over the bridge... hearing the noise, windows smashed, cars burnt, it was dead exciting.
