rico Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 remember that shop that sells Oxbow clothing getting looted
stix Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 There was a peice about it in the chronicle recently. i was only 1 i think but was a good read. guy im mates with now was there.
Wymsey Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 Wasn't there a 'riot' last week or two there involving 40 people?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 There was a riot in Highfields? Thought it was a ruckus (or possibly a fracas.)
accessory Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 A brief skirmish between a couple of local gangs, nothing more. I can imagine how unpleasant it might have been to witness, but by 80s standards (especially 80s football standards) it was pretty tame.
purpleronnie Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 I'm old enough to remember. You were part of it? Or did those involved admit it was a copycat riot?
Webbo Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 You were part of it? Or did those involved admit it was a copycat riot? I'm not the rioting type. There was a load of them across the country. I'll admit that's only my opinion but I have a great deal of respect for my opinion.

Maybe the toxteth ones were copycat too?

Possibly, I don't remember that well. What were they over/about? It was a hot summer and we were at the peak of the recession, unemployment was high, although a lot of those rioting had never had a job and didn't want one either. There was a feeling amongst the black community that the police picked on them but as I'm not black and I've never lived in Highfields I wouldn't know if that was justified or not.

Bit of a value judgement there. Have any evidence to back that up? Or are you relying on what the tabloids reported?
rico Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 From Wiki..... 1981, the United Kingdom suffered serious riots across many major cities in England. They were race riots between communities, in all cases the main motives for the riots were related to racial tension and inner-city deprivation. The riots were caused by a distrust of the police and authority. The four main riots that occurred were the Brixton riot in London, the Handsworth riot in Birmingham, the Chapeltown riot in Leeds and the Toxteth riots in Liverpool.

It was 3 weeks before my 16th birthday, The only paper I read was the back page of the Mercury. I have actually met people and experienced a bit of life. I did live through those times. I think I'm qualified to make my own judgement.
Finnegan Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 I have a great deal of respect for my opinion. I love that line. Best thing you've ever posted.

Some may say that's precisely the type of ignorance and prejudice which caused the problems the first time around.

And you know that because you were there? But you're right. All the rioters were hard working, upstanding members of the community who would never do anything illegal (apart from rioting).

Zingari Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 just google "The Scarman Report" to get info on what is supposed to have happened and what caused it I just remember a few nights of trouble up Highfields that seemed to ignite soon after Brixton and Toxteth etc I don't think it made the national news but i've found out whilst trying to remember about the 4 Leicester players playing in the same England team , that my memory plays a lot of tricks on me just lately
