That 'Scary' and 'Nervous' feeling about us spending big

Recommended Posts

I have read from a few people's comments and discussions on how they're nervous and scared about all this money being spent on players and wages. I for one am completely the opposite, its about time we've had some dosh to spend and it seems to be spent wisely! I mean its not as if we're spending millions on players who are past it or crocked, I've been very impressed from what I've seen of most of our new signings. Think about it, we were playing extremely attractive football as soon as Sven arrived with little changed to the side. He's bringing in players who suit him and the squad, imagine what we'll be like when he's happy with the side! There's nothing to be worried about, honest!

I have to say the sums spent worry me in terms of the pressure on the players and manager - it really does seem like shit or bust for next season, and I do have serious concerns about the long-term interests of our Thai owners.

However, I'm not that concerned about how the money is being spent, so I'd agree with you there. If you look at the players for whom we have paid transfer fees so far (Konchesky, Peltier, Schmeichel and Mills), then with the exception of Konchesky, they are all quite young and with experience in English league football. If we gain promotion and have to sell them, they will command significant returns on our investment. If they don't work out and we look to sell them after 1 or 2 seasons, then at the age of 25/26 they will still be valuable players and will at least get us reasonable transfer fees. In the long run, I think this kind of squad investment is better than paying less for pros approaching the end of their careers, who will be worth nothing in a few years' time but will put an almost equal strain on the wage budget.

What's more, if we do achieve promotion next season, then having made significant investment now, we should not have to ring huge changes to compete in the PL. Certainly a few players would be needed, but we would have the skeleton of a good team and we wouldn't have to pay more then to ship in 10 players or so before the start of a PL campaign, which will also cause huge disruption to the squad.

I think the money we have spent seems to suit long-term building - which is why I hope the current owners really do stick around, and that they don't get trigger-happy about firing Sven if he doesn't bring instant success. To compare our project with what went on at Man City two years ago (as fans of other clubs have done) is in my view completely ridiculous and to completely exaggerate and misunderstand what we are doing.

there's a load of bullshit spoken about how much we're spending

1st thing to keep in mind is that not many of our targets are on their clubs transfer list, therefore we have to overpay to get the club to sell

Secondly we've set our stall out with Yakubu and said we're not going to pay premier league wages in the championship

Thirdly, through ending our interest in Maynard we've said we're not going to be held to ransom over transfer fees

Yes, we may be spending more than others in the division but it's far from ridiculous

I think alot of people are unsure what to think as this is pretty much unchartered territory for our club!

1) having money!

2) spending the money we do have on decent players!

Not things we have been used to over the past decade, or before for that matter.

I'm sure we will be alright though.

What other people are forgetting is that towards the latter half of the season there was so many goals leaked from shoddy defending and goalkeeping. Now we have a decent back 4 and goal keeper the majority of points dropped shouldnt be dropped this time round.

It's been great so far but now we're now being linked to players we don't need (NRC & Hargreaves when we have 5 centre mids, a plethora of defenders when we have 11, and strikers like Ched Evans who won't strengthen our first XI). We paid for Konchesky when I'm sure he'd have come for free, it sounds like we're lining Routledge's agents pockets (this may be sensible in hindsight), and by all accounts we're (reportedly) paying huge wages (no not just Konchesky).

So far i'm happy but I do hope Sven know's when to stop. Routledge and/or Maynard would be ideal. Expensive but worth it, because they improve the starting XI massively. If we keep this spending up on players we don't need, and then fail to go up, then we will end up in serious problems, however great the owners have been so far.

Bring the abuse!

Spending more money than everyone else is not worrying as it is not like we are spending £10-£20m per player. I would be more concerned that the quality we are getting would not be enough to see us out of the Championship to the Premiership.

Thankfully I can not see one bad signing yet and I am as confident as I have been for a long time that we will go up this season. The owners have put their money where their mouth is and IMO have started to make the supporters feel a part of the club for the first time in years.

If it goes tits up then it goes tits up. We will survive in one form or another and the players we have got in will all have some significant resale value in future should we ever need to sell desperately. I can see only good times for the foreseeablle future.

I agree with most of this. There is a worry about the amounts of money we're spending. I'm just looking at it like this: Enjoy it while you can, not many clubs get the chance. I'll support Leicester in the Prem or the conference, it matters not to me. (Obviously I'd like it to be the Prem) .

Exactly my thoughts... Although we do need depth in the squad, so far our attacking positions have seen little improvement. Those 2 players in my view would complete the starting XI.

I say Sven, spend as much as you my son! I reckon the city fans that worry about the money being spent are the type of folk that worry about their own money, and are maybe a little 'tight' and most probably as careful as fu.... It's like a mirror you see, the views on our club reflect our own personalities :)

I have to echo those who say we don't appear to have made a ropey signing yet.

If we'd gone for the marquee signings on silly money like Michael Owen and Shay Given, I'd be rather more worried. We're going for players on the way up and those with a point to prove, not those who've had their best days and are looking to wind down their career on a hefty pay packet.

This squad is clearly more than a one season wonder win-or-bust rabble. It's a squad with plenty of legs, depth and a squad that may need only minimal additions this time next year if we are promoted rather than be forced into panic buying.

We're signing a few players but we had a thin squad that was short on permanent players who can play the 'Sven way.'

No money wasted so far as I can see and optimism is rightly building.

If you are spending sleepless nights worrying about how much city are spending then you probably haven't got much stress in your own life. An easy way to fix this would be to get your missus pregnant and the issues of city spending wads of cash will disappear into a sea of shitty nappies, puke and very early waking up times. :)
