shen Posted 5 August 2011 Posted 5 August 2011 Finally!! Gotta be the first time I actually recognize some names in your mix as well. Obviously know the Anathema track well, having put another song from WHBWH in mine. And pretty sure you introduced me to Algernon Cadwallader as well. Pluggin in!
General Smuts Posted 5 August 2011 Posted 5 August 2011 Looking forward to this - apologies i've been a bit of a flake with reviews, its not on purpose i've just been super busy the past few weeks with stupid real life. They'll all get reviewed soon.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 Is this gonna bew a fully heads down guitar haze Mark? I'll DL it after the match.
shen Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 Felt like doing a track-for-track review for this one, mainly because I'm procrastinating... 01. Letting Up Despite Great Faults - Repeating Hearts Liked the first track, more upbeat than I would expect from you (no offense there). I think it worked quite well, the shoe-gazey, synths and the beat and a very good opener too. 02. Drop Nineteens - Winona Not so convinced by Winona which, despite some nice guitar sounds in the chorus, lacks a bit overall. 03. Anathema - Dreaming Light Obviously know Dreaming Light well, and a nice shift of pace and style here. Not a track for me that sticks out of WHBWH, but decent nonetheless. 04. Northern Picture Library - Untitled #2 Can't really say anything about Untitled #2 which is no more no less than an interlude. 05. Justin Vernon - Hazelton I shouldn't really like Hazelton, Vernon's voice just hits some spots that make me tweak a bit. But I do like it, I find it quite infectious. Definitely a grower. 06. Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) - Water Water starts out very much like a Coheed and Cambria track, and his voice is even very similar. It's alright, but ultimately I think his voice, like early C&C/Shabutie, is not polished enough/too indie which makes me frown. 07. Algernon Cadwallader - If It Kills Me I remember being iffy about Algernon Cadwallader the first time as well, and this hasn't changed my perception much. It actually reminded me a lot of Oceansize musically with a bit more punk'ish oomph in the vocals, and if his voice didn't feel so forced, I would've probably loved this. As it is, I'm still not convinced. That said, another great change of pace. You have a knack for this. 08. Volcano Choir - Island, IS You're a big fan of Vernon I gather This was decent, even if I can't say much more than that. This I guess is what he does best, but the music while starting out quite interesting with the almost frantic guitars/synths gets a bit monotonous. The small break actually threatened to develop into something, but was cut short to go back to the main riff which was a bit of a let down. 09. J. Tillman - Evans and Falls What a soothing piece this was. Not much happening but captivating vocals delivered poignantly means this is one of the highlights in the mix for me. 10. Autre Ne Veut - Drama Cum Drama This one being the gem, IMO. Loved this from the first listen and still the strongest track now. There's just so much happening and it doesn't muddle up and even the cheesy pop sounds enhance the whole tune. Innovative stuff I think. Top marks there. 11. Bitcrush - What Would Hope Be Without Disappointment The Bitcrush track is, dare I say it, a classic Mark track if that exists. Or put another way, it surprised me the least to hear this track in your mix It's got that airy feel and would have gone down a treat in your previous mix. Decent track that "did it's job", i.e. solid but not spectacular. 12. Moscow Olympics - Cut The World The Moscow Olympics track got me back down to earth a bit again though. I appreciate trying to end on something a little bit more up tempo, but it did very little for me. If I was very critical I'd say it was one track too much. Overall, I really liked it (once again). Well balanced mix with some great tracks, and I will be listening to this many more times yet
The Doctor Posted 5 September 2011 Posted 5 September 2011 Repeating Hearts - Not bad, very upbeat and an enjoyable track to listen to. Winona - Tune is good, vocals not so much Dreaming Light - Not sure, I quite like it but it sounds like the sort of song that would be in a really soppy movie, which don't tend to appeal to me. Untitled #2 - No, not for me. Sounds like more of an interlude than a track and interludes are a bit of a pet peeve of mine, trying to flesh out the album and make it look longer. Hazelton - quite like this and would be one I'd listen to more Water - I feel like I ought to like it, but i just don't. If It Kills Me - yeah, good track although I'm not sure on the vocals. Island, IS - Good track and feels like one worth a few more listens Evans and Falls - Not sure, it's not the sort of thing I'd usually listen to but it does have a certain catch to it Drama Cum Drama - not keen on the opening but it does grow into a good track. What Would Hope Be Without Disappointment - Got a nice calm feel to it, ok but not something I'd be likely to listen to much Cut The World - I quite like it, good track to end on.
