bluesbrothers Posted 7 August 2011 Posted 7 August 2011 Can't believe all the hate for Alan Young here! He's a much better pundit than the likes of Steve Walsh, who continually relates everything on field to his own career. he comes across as xenophobic Xenophobic? You're basing that on his vendetta against the Yak no doubt, who he clearly didn't agree with the lax playing style of. Rubbish. If he was Xenophobic, he'd be getting into the back of the likes of Berner, Abe and Fernandes, whom whe's rarely had a bad word to say against. Granted, we've only had one games commentary of the latter, but that's a pretty stupid tag to go throwing around. A lot of people didn't like Yakubu, Van Aanholt and Bruma, because they perpetuated the image of being "too big for the championship." And Young was damn right to call their bluff. He said what the fans thought. Premier League Primadonnas that were over rated and not worth their paycheck. So glad Sven this year has brought in hungry players with a hunger to play. You'll struggle to find evidence for your stupid claim this year. Theres a difference between being Xenophobic - that is, hating all things foreign - and slating players that dont pull their weight - and simply because the players he slated last term were foreign, you put 2 and 2 together, and got a big fat 73. And besides the point, he has slated Wellens at times too for trying to be too clever and Gallagher, a fellow Scot, for being lightweight. Your point is damn well invalid. And what he says is usually relevant to the game, along with the fact that he will speak his mind without going over the top. When people like Mark Halfwit Lawrenson and Steve "One Minute I Hate Leicester, The Next I Bum Them, The Next I Hate Them Again" Claridge are still being employed at national level as pundits, i'm bloody glad we have young giving our insight - hell, I'm downright honoured. Stringer, again, I like. There are a fair few fans out there who describe him as "up his own backside" but regular listeners will agree he shows passion, which is always great. There are always going to be memorable soundbites come from the lad - I get hairs on my neck standing up when I hear back Bristol City last year and Waggy's goal - he's grown on many of us and I honestly think we have a damn good local commentary team. Keep it up BBC Leicester. Some people just love to moan.
Guest Posted 7 August 2011 Posted 7 August 2011 Incorrect. We might strike it lucky and the BBC might hire someone competent and professional. Who somebody else would loathe as much as most on here seem to loathe Stringer. Bottom line is if you're waiting for a 'perfect' commentator then don't hold your breath
StarFox Posted 7 August 2011 Posted 7 August 2011 I can say for a fact that Leicester City is a far better football club with Ian Stringer around. You can tell he puts his heart and soul into the job and I think he does a pretty good job feeling us news all through the week on radio leicester. He also seems to get along well with Sven and many players at the club which is a valuable asset in itself.

Like you say, maybe I have put 2 and 2 together and ended up well wide of the mark. As for your other point, the dire standard of punditry these days is no excuse. Steve Claridge shouldn't be near a television studio so don't even think about making a case for Young by comparing him with Claridge. Stringer demonstrates perfectly well that you can be passionate, sensible, knowledgeable and opinionated without being a pile of shit. And more recently you may have heard Bruno Berner alongside Stringer out in Sweden. What a refreshing change that was; a genuinely intelligent and knowledgeable footballer who was really on the pulse. Berner is the type of pundit I would like alongside Stringer and he makes Young look like what he is, a stubborn old man.
Zingari Posted 9 August 2011 Posted 9 August 2011 he's only fookin gone and done it again he said it was waggy who had scored and it was gally there's me again thinking that i'd won a massive bet on who would score the first city goal and i'm doing somersaults up the garden path and the missus calls me back in to tell me it was gally he's made me look a proper charlie again
Salieri Posted 9 August 2011 Posted 9 August 2011 he's made me look a proper charlie again I'm sure you don't need Stringers help for that?
Zingari Posted 9 August 2011 Posted 9 August 2011 I'm sure you don't need Stringers help for that? very true , but it's nice to have someone to share the blame once in a while
Al-aLondon-Foxile Posted 13 August 2011 Posted 13 August 2011 "Schlupps electrifying pace, he's held up tho" Gotta love our Ian.
David Lowe Posted 14 August 2011 Author Posted 14 August 2011 "Schlupps electrifying pace, he's held up tho" Gotta love our Ian. Does anybody know if Radio Leicester have a new manager? I'm pleased if this is correct because that woman made a right cock-up of the football coverage.
