Head Honcho Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 I put most of the hatred aimed at Stringer on the site down to jealously He is at the club knowing whats going on "most" of the time and then there is us, sat at a laptop at midnight fretting about the Beckford deal Granted at times he is annoying, but hey aint we all Im happy we have someone close to the club that tweets and keeps us, the fans up to date as best he can I agree. He's much more unlikely to give us a duff rumour, unlike the other journos looking to outscoop each other. Just my opinion like!
MrSpaM Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 To be fair, even on the five live commentry, they kept mentioning Beckford might be leaving everton, but you can probably count the ammount of times they mentioned he was coming to us on two fingers. Not a very good job of covering it over all, they mainly just went on about Arteta and how annoyed Everton fans must be for 3 hours.
Nunny Fox Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 Thought he did the right thing today, only posting what was fact unlike most the mugs on twitter saying that Kebe was having a medical ect. I would rather nothing be posted than most of the BS goin about on there yesterday.
JadeFalcon Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 my only gripe with stringer is he doesnt talk enough football like other commentators do, otherwise i like him
Larry_LCFC Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 I feel sorry for the guy. People bitch about him when he gets ahead of himself and chats some rubbish and bitch about him when he keeps quiet. Poor bloke cant win with some people.
nuttytimmy Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 "Are you Stringer in Disguise.................." No, but I did once want his job. As a kid, it would've been my dream to commentate on Leicester (one below playing for us and scoring an FA Cup final winner at Wembley, of course!) Actually, I still want his job.
Callabinho Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 He Kept us well up to date. 1. Told us bid was accepted. 2.Sky jumped the gun and said he had signed and then realised he hadn't so changed it. 3.waited at the stadium until he had put pen to paper then announced it. whats not up to date there? Stringer is a top bloke! If you have ever met him you would think the same!
thybluefox Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Its nice to see some people sticking up for him for a change. I'll be honest, I do know the bloke and I have had the conversation with him about the stick he gets from fans. He knows that he can never win with some people, report rumours and get slagged off, or only report solid facts, and get slagged off. But he takes it on the chin and doesn't moan about it (I brought up the topic). Most of it is down to jealousy, if any of us said they wouldn't like the access he gets to the club we'd be lying. He played Wednesday spot on from what I can see, he denied the Kebe rumours when they were doing the rounds, and got us photographic proof of Beckfords existence before 5Live or SSN had even picked the story up. If stick is to go anywhere, it should be on SSN, who got that obsessed with Arteta they missed Evertons top scorer nipping out the back door.
Toffee_Fox Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Thats because Arteta is a huge player, Beckford whilst is top goalscorer, Arteta was there for 8 seasons and the big fans favourite, major transfer story.

Let me one of the voices that is not bound by this mystery jealousy infection. A serious commentator would spend most of their time when a game is on talking about the action that is occurring on the field, not banging to death with a fellow commentator their axe to grind with a particular player, or focussing on non related football matters, such as hair, and cuts of. It's as though an unqualified fan from fanzone managed to wrangle a job at the BBC cos his Dad is well connected. Now I know that isn't the truth, but it may as well be. Perhaps he should stick to commentating on girls' hockey matches, as he's bloody shite at football commentating. If he genuinely believes the reason people give him stick is because 'they're jealous', then he's more deluded than he sounds on the aul wireless. Yes he is in a privileged position to get scoops, as the club rely on particular steady avenues to leak their news or relay their news to. Stringer is nothing more than a scoop patsy. He rarely gets any extra information before it's allowed to be released otherwise he would risk the further fed 'scoops' down the line. i appreciate that you are sticking up for him as he's a 'mate'. But that doesn't stop me saying one of my mates are a pillock. Though it's difficult to admit if they are shite at their job without upsetting them, even though entirely true and most everyone else can see it and admit it.

Sorry, need to put you right on something, I realise it probably read like he thinks it's down to jealousy in my original post, but thats my opinion and not his, apologies for poorly wording what I meant. He does get extra bits of info from different sources, but like you say, he's never going to be able to report anything the club don't want him to because he and the BBC need to stay on the right side of Sven et al to keep the very good access he does have. Last thing the Beeb wants is to go back to the Pearson days. Can't say I'm really sticking up for him, I know he's not everyone's cup of tea and that's fine, but just as much as you have the right to air your opinion, so do I - and my view of his commentating hasn't changed much since I've known him (although I wouldn't go as far to say he's a mate, aquaintance maybe)

I'm sure he's a top lad with a heart of gold, and his sentiments are in the right place. But that's fine and dandy, just seems he's forgotten about the journalism side of things, and maybe if he refocussed his mind, and stopped playing up celebrity by proxy, and oh I've got twitter and people hang on my every word approach to his job, started paying attention to what's happening on the field and remember what he's paid to do, and try be a bit more objective, the commentator ratio of neutral commentator plus experienced pro - buddy system works on every medium relatively well, try to watch/listen to what they do well. Otherwise you are the radio version of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6o52kZxvtg
